Chapter 7

Update:  2022.09.05

Heb. 7:1 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) this one (houtos), the (ho) Melchisedek (Melchisedek), king (basileus) of Salem (Salēm), [is] [a] sacrificial priest (hiereus) of the (tou) God (theou), of the (tou) highest (hupsistou) [priesthood, AE];

the (ho) [sacrificial priest, RE] having met together with (sunantēsas) Abraham (Abraam) returning (hupostrephonti) from (apo) the (tēs) slaughter (kopēs) of the (tōn) kings (basileōn), and (kai) [the sacrificial priest, RE] having eulogized (eulogēsas) him (auton),

Heb. 7:2 (LIT/UBS4) to whom (hō) also (kai) Abraham (Abraam) divided (emerisen) [a] tenth (dekatēn) from (apo) all things (pantōn).

(See Gen. 14:17-20)

First (prōton), truly (men), [Melchisedek, v1, ER] is being interpreted (hermēneuomenos) ‘King (basileus) of Righteousness (dikaiosunēs),’ but (de) thereupon (epeita) ‘King (basileus) of Salem (Salēm)’ also (kai), which (ho) is (estin) ‘King (basileus) of Peace (eirēnēs)!’

Heb. 7:3 (LIT/UBS4) [Melchisedek, v1, ER] [is] without [a] father (apatōr), without [a] mother (amētōr), without [a] genealogy (agenealogētos), and not (mēte) one having (echōn) [a] beginning (archēn) of days (hēmerōn), and not (mēte) [one having, RE] [a] completion (telos) of life (zōēs)!

But (de) he having been made from [a] likeness (aphōmoiōmenos) to the (tō) son (huiō) of the (tou) God (theou), he stays (menei) [a] continual (diēnekes) sacrificial priest (hiereus) into (eis) the (to) [completion of life, RE].

Heb. 7:4 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) do you observe (theōreite) how sized (pēlikos) this one (houtos) [was], to whom (hō) the (ho) patriarch (patriarchēs) Abraham (Abraam) also (kai) gave (edōken) [a] tenth (dekatēn) out (ek) of the (tōn) tips of the heaps (akrothiniōn)?

Heb. 7:5 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai), truly (men), the ones (hoi) out (ek) of the (tōn) sons (huiōn) of Levi (Leui) receiving (lambanontes) the (tēn) service of the priesthood (hierateian), they have (echousin) [an] injunction (entolēn) down according to (kata) the (ton) law (nomon) to receive [a] tenth from (apodekatoun) the (ton) people (laon), that (tout’) is (estin), [from, AE] the (tous) brothers (adelphous) of them (autōn);

and so be it (kaiper), they having come out (exelēluthotas) out (ek) of the (tēs) loin (osphuos) of Abraham (Abraam)!

Heb. 7:6 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) [Melchisedek, v1, ER], he not being genealogically worded (mē genealogoumenos) [to be] out (ex) of them (autōn), [a] tenth has been given (dedekatōken) [to Melchisedek, v1, RE] [from, AE] Abraham (Abraam).

And (kai) [Abraham, RE], the one (ton) holding (echonta) the (tas) promises (epangelias), he has been eulogized (eulogēken)!

Heb. 7:7 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) apart from (chōris) every (pasēs) contradiction (antilogias), the (to) lesser (elatton) [Abraham, v6, RE] is eulogized (eulogeitai) under (hupo) [authority, AE] of the (tou) stronger positioned (kreittonos) [Melchisedek, v1, ER].

Heb. 7:8 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) here (hōde), truly (men), mortals (anthrōpoi) dying away (apothnēskontes) receive (lambanousin) tenths (dekatas)!

But (de) there (ekei) [Melchisedek, v1, ER] is being witnessed to (marturoumenos) that (hoti) he lives (zē).

Heb. 7:9 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) to enunciate (eipein) [an] enunciation (epos), as (hōs) through (di’) Abraham (Abraam), Levi (Leui) also (kai), the one (ho) receiving (lambanōn) tenths (dekatas), he has given [a] tenth (dedekatōtai).

Heb. 7:10 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) he was yet being (eti ēn) in (en) the (tē) loin (osphui) of the (tou) father (patros) [of him, AE] when (hote) Melchisedek (Melchisedek) met together with (sunēntēsen) [Abraham, v9, RE] for him (autō).

Heb. 7:11 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), truly (men), if (ei) completeness (teleiōsis) was being (ēn) through (dia) the (tēs) Levitical (Leuitikēs) sacred order (hierōsunēs), because (gar) [if it was being, RE] over (ep’) [the sake, AE] of her (autēs) the (ho) people (laos) had law put in place (nenomothetētai), what (tis) need (chreia) yet (eti) [was there, AE] for [a] sacrificial priest (hierea) of another kind (heteron) to cause himself to stand up (anistasthai) down according to (kata) the (tēn) order (taxin) of Melchisedek (Melchisedek), and (kai) to absolutely not be said to be (ou legesthai) down according to (kata) the (tēn) order (taxin) of Aaron (Aarōn)!?

Heb. 7:12 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) of the (tēs) sacred order (hierōsunēs) being put (metatithemenēs) out (ex), of necessity (anankēs) [a] transference (metathesis) of law (nomou) also (kai) is caused to come to pass (ginetai)!

Heb. 7:13 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) over (eph’) [the sake, AE] of whom (hon) is said (legetai) these things (tauta), he has held together with (meteschēken) [a] tribe (phulēs) of another kind (heteras), from (aph’) which (hēs) absolutely not one (oudeis) has paid attention to (proseschēken) the (tō) altar (thusiastēriō)!

Heb. 7:14 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) [it, AE] [is] prominent (prodēlon) that (hoti) the (ho) lord (kurios) of us (hēmōn) has risen up (anatetalken) out (ex) of Judah (Iouda), into (eis) which (hēn) tribe (phulēn), about (peri) sacrificial priests (hiereōn), Moses (Mōusēs) spoke (elalēsen) absolutely not one thing (ouden)!

Heb. 7:15 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) yet (eti) it is (estin) abundantly (perissoteron) obvious (katadēlon), if (ei) down according to (kata) the (tēn) likeness (homoiotēta) of Melchisedek (Melchisedek) [a] sacrificial priest (hiereus) of another kind (heteros) causes himself to stand up (anistatai),

Heb. 7:16 (LIT/UBS4) which (hos) has come to pass (gegonen);

absolutely not (ou) down according to (kata) [a] law (nomon) of [a] flesh-based (sarkinēs) injunction (entolēs), BUT (alla), down on account (kata) of [an] unable to be loosened down (akatalutou) inherently powered (dunamin) [law, RE] of life (zōēs)!

Heb. 7:17 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) he is witnessed to (martureitai), that (hoti), “You (su) [are] [a] sacrificial priest (hiereus) into (eis) the (ton) age (aiōna), down according to (kata) the (tēn) order (taxin) of Melchisedek (Melchisedek).”

(See Psalm 110:4)

Heb. 7:18 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar), truly (men), [a] displacement (athetēsis) is caused to come to pass (ginetai) of [an] injunction (entolēs) through (dia) [the sake, AE] of the (to) disability (asthenes) and (kai) unprofitability (anōpheles) of her (autēs), leading to (proagousēs) [her displacement, RE]!

Heb. 7:19 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) the (ho) law (nomos) made complete (eteleiōsen) absolutely not one thing (ouden)!

But (de) [the law, RE] [was] [an] introduction into (epeisagōgē) [a] stronger positioned (kreittonos) hope (elpidos), through (di’) which (hēs) we come near1448 (engizomen) to the (tō) God (theō);

Heb. 7:20 (LIT/UBS4) and (kai) [we come near to the God, v19, RE] down on account (kath’) [of hope, v19, RE], without (chōris) absolutely not (ou) as much as (hoson) [an] oath (horkōmosias)!

Because (gar) truly (men), the ones (hoi) having become (gegonotes) sacrificial priests (hiereis) are (eisin) [sacrificial priests, RE] without (chōris) [an] oath (horkōmosias)!

Heb. 7:21 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) [Jesus, v6:20, RE] [became [a] sacrificial priest, v7:20, RE] with (meta) [an] oath (horkōmosias) through (dia) the (tou) [Lord, RE] saying (legontos) to (pros) him (auton), “[The] Lord (kurios, YHWH) swore (ōmosen), and (kai) he shall absolutely not be made regretful (ou metamelēthēsetai), ‘You [are] [a] sacrificial priest (hiereus) into (eis) the (ton) age (aiōna) ...’

(See Psalm 110:4.)

Heb. 7:22 (LIT/UBS4) Down on account (kata) of so much (tosouto) [of [an] oath, v21, RE] Jesus (Iēsous) has become (gegonen) [an] endorser (enguos) of [a] stronger positioned (kreittonos) covenant (diathēkēs)!

Heb. 7:23 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) the ones (hoi), truly (men), are (eisin) many (pleiones), [the ones, RE] having become (gegonotes) sacrificial priests (hiereis)!

Through (dia) the (to) death (thanatō) [of sacrificial priests, RE] [they, AE] [are] to be cut off (kōluesthai) [from being able, AE] to stay alongside (paramenein)!

Heb. 7:24 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) [Jesus, v22, RE], through (dia) the (to) [death, v23, RE], he (auton) [is] to stay (menein) into (eis) the (ton) age (aiōna)!

He holds (echei) the (tēn) sacred order (hierōsunēn) transferable (aparabaton),

Heb. 7:25 (LIT/UBS4) from which (hothen) he can inherently power himself (dunatai) into (eis) the (to) entire end (panteles) to make whole (sōzein) also (kai) the ones (tous) causing themselves to come to (proserchomenous) the (tō) God (theō) through (di’) him (autou), always (pantote) living (zōn) into (eis) the (to) [age, v24, RE] to intercede (entunchanein) over (huper) [the sake, AE] of them (autōn)!

Heb. 7:26 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) to us (hēmin) [a] chief sacrificial priest (archiereus) like this (toioutos) is being conspicuous (eprepen) also (kai):

[a] dedicated one (hosios);

one not evil (akakos);

[an] uncontaminated one (amiantos);

one having been separated (kechōrismenos) from (apo) sinful ones (hamartōlōn);

and (kai) one having caused himself to become (genomenos) [a] higher one (hupsēloteros) of the (tōn) heavens (ouranōn);

(For an outline of Jesus Christ’s accomplishments in his earthly agency to his heavenly Father, see the note under Mat. 3:17.)

Heb. 7:27 (LIT/UBS4) one who (hos) absolutely does not have (ouk echei) [a] necessity (anankēn) down through (kath’) each day (hēmeran), as (hōsper) the (hoi) chief sacrificial priests (archiereis), to bring up (anapherein) sacrifices (thusias) over (huper) the (tōn) previous (proteron) sins (hamartiōn) of his own (idiōn), thereupon (epeita) the (tōn) [sins, RE] of the (tou) people (laou).

Because (gar) he did (epoiēsen) this (touto) once upon [a] time (ephapax), he having brought up (anenenkas) himself (heauton)!

Heb. 7:28 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) the (ho) law (nomos) appoints (kathistēsin) mortals (anthrōpous), [to be] chief sacrificial priests (archiereis) having (echontas) [a] disability (astheneian).

But (de) with (meta) [the transference, v12, RE] of the (ton) law (nomon), the (ho) Word (logos) of the (tēs) sworn oath (horkōmosias) of the (tēs) [Lord, v21, RE] [appoints, RE] [his, AE] son (huion) into (eis) the (ton) age (aiōna), he having been made complete (teteleiōmenon).

(For who is the complete one, see Luke 13:31-32; John 17:18-23; Eph.4:7-16; Col. 1:19; Heb. 5:8-9, 7:28, 9:11, 12:2.)
