Chapter 3

 

3:1 The (ho) Word (logos) [is] a believable one (pistos)!

 

If (ei) anyone (tis) causes himself to stretch (oregetai) [for a position] of an episcopacy (episkopēs), he lusts (epithumei) [for] a beautiful (kalou) work (ergou).

 

3:2 Therefore (oun) it is required (dei) of the (ton) episcopate (episkopon) to be (einai) irreproachable (anepilēmpton);

 

a male (andra) of one (mias) female (gunaikos);

 

sober (nēphalion);

 

whole-thoughted (sōphrona);

 

orderly (kosmion);

 

a lover of alienated ones (philoxenon);

 

able to teach (didaktikon);

 

3:3 not (mē) a wino (paroinon);

 

not (mē) a hitter (plēktēn), BUT (alla), gentle (epieikē);

 

a non-fighter (amachon);

 

a non-lover of silver (aphilarguron);

3:4 beautifully (kalōs) standing himself before (proistamenon) the (tou) house (oikou) of his own (idiou), holding (echonta) in (en) submission5292 (hupotagē) ones born (tekna) [to him], with (meta) all (pasēs) integrity (semnotētos);

 

3:5  (But (de) if (ei) anyone (tis) has absolutely not seen (ouk oiden) to stand before (prostēnai) the (tou) house (oikou) of his own (idiou), how (pōs) [shall] an assembly (ekklēsias) of God (theou) be cared over (epimelēsetai)!?);

 

3:6 not (mē) a neophyte (neophuton), one having been made a cloud of smoke5187 (tuphōtheis), in order that (hina) he may not fall in (mē empesē) into (eis) a judicial decision (krima) of the (tou) diabolical one (diabolou)!

 

3:7 But (de) it is required (dei) [of the episcopate] to hold (echein) a beautiful (kalēn) witness (marturian) from (apo) the ones (tōn) outside (exōthen), in order that (hina) he may not fall (mē empesē) into (eis) reproach (oneidismon), and (kai) [into] a trap (pagida) of the (tou) diabolical one (diabolou).

 

3:8 In the same manner (hōsautōs), ministers (diakonous) be reputable (semnous), not (mē) double-worded1351 (dilogous);

 

not (mē) paying attention to (prosechontas) much (pollō) wine (oinō);

 

not (mē) shamefully employed (aischrokerdeis);

 

3:9 ones holding (echontas) the (to) mystery (mustērion) of the (tēs) belief (pisteōs) in (en) a cleansed (kathara) conscience (suneidēsei).

 

3:10 But (de) these ones (houtoi) also (kai) be proved (dokimazesthōsan) first (prōton).

 

Thereafter (eita) minister (diakoneitōsan) being (ontes) unquestionable ones (anenklētoi).

 

3:11 In the same manner (hōsautōs) reputable (semnas) females (gunaikas), not (mē) [being] diabolical ones (diabolous);

 

[being] sober (nēphalious), believable (pistas) in (en) all things (pasin).

 

3:12 Ministers (diakonoi), be (estōsan) males (andres) of one (mias) female (gunaikos);

 

beautifully (kalōs) standing yourselves before (proistamenoi) [the] born ones (teknōn) and (kai) the (tōn) house (oikōn) of your own (idiōn).

 

3:13 Because (gar) the ones (hoi) having ministered (diakonēsantes) beautifully (kalōs) cause themselves to acquire (peripoiountai) for themselves (heautois) a beautiful (kalon) depth (bathmon), and (kai) much (pollēn) boldness (parrēsian) in (en) belief (pistei), the (tē) [belief] in (en) Christ (Christō) Jesus (Iēsou).

 

3:14 I write (graphō) these things (tauta) to you (soi) hoping (elpizōn) to come (elthein) to (pros) you (se) in (en) acceleration (tachei).

 

3:15  But (de) if perhaps (ean) I may tarry (bradunō) [it is] in order that (hina) you may have seen (eidēs) how (pōs) it is required (dei) to be caused to turn up390 (anastrephesthai) in (en) [the] house (oikō) of God (theou), which (hētis) is (estin) [the] assembly (ekklēsia) of God (theou), [the] living (zōntos) pillar (stulos) and (kai) support (hedraiōma) of the (tēs) Truth (alētheias).

3:16 And (kai) confessedly (homologoumenōs) great (mega) is (estin) the (to) mysterious one (mustērion) of the (tēs) piety (eusebeias), one who (hos) was manifested (ephanerōthē) in (en) to flesh (sarki);

 

[one who] was made righteousness (edikaiōthē) in (en) Spirit (pneumati);

 

[one who] was gazed at (ōphthē) [by] messengers (angelois);

 

[one who] was preached (ekēruchthē) among (en) ethnic groups (ethnesin);

 

[one who] was believed (episteuthē) in (en) [the] cosmos (kosmō);

 

[one who] was taken up (anelēphthē) in (en) to glory (doxē)!
