Chapter 4


4:1 Therefore (oun) of Christ (Christou) having suffered (pathontos) flesh (sarki), you (humeis) also (kai) arm yourselves (hoplisasthe) of the (tēn) same (auten) inner mindful thing (ennoian):


that (hoti) the one (ho) having suffered (pathōn) flesh (sarki) has paused himself (pepautai) [from] sin (hamartias);


4:2 [you, v1] no longer yet (mēketi) [suffering, v1] in (eis) the (to) lusts (epithumiais) of mortals (anthrōpōn) [in] the (ton) time (chronon) remaining over (epiloipos) to have life (biōsai) in (en) flesh (sarki), BUT (alla), [suffering in the] desire (thelēmati) of God (theou)!


4:3 Because (gar) the (ho) time (chronos) having passed (parelēluthōs) [is] satisfactory (arketos) of the (to) wish (boulēma) of the (tōn) ethnic groups (ethnōn) to have worked themselves down (kateirgasthai) [from sin], they having caused themselves to go on (peporeumenous) in (en) unrestrained excesses (aselgeiais);


to lusts (epithumiais);


to wine babblings (oinophlugiais);


to revellings (kōmois);


to drinking bouts (potois);


and (kai) to unstatutory (athemitois) idolatries (eidōlolatriais);


4:4 in (en) which (hō) they are caused to lodge (xenizontai) [a complaint] of you (humōn) not (mē) running together with (suntrechontōn) [them], into (eis) the (tēn) same (autēn) overflow (anachusin) of the (tēs) unwholeness (asōtias);


4:5 blaspheming ones (blasphēmountes) who (hoi) shall give (apodōsousin) a word (logon) to the one (tō) holding (echonti) ready (hetoimōs) to judge (krinai) ones living (zōntas) and (kai) dead ones (nekrous)!


4:6 Because (gar) dead ones (nekrois) also (kai) were evangelized (euēngelisthē) into (eis) this (touto), in order that (hina) they may be judged (krithōsi) truly (men) down according to (kata) mortals (anthrōpous) flesh (sarli), but (de) they may live (zōsi) down according to (kata) Spirit (pneumati) of God (theon).


4:7 But (de) the (to) completion (telos) of all things (pantōn) has come near1448 (ēngiken).


Therefore (oun) you be whole-thoughted (sōphronēsate) and (kai) you be sober (nēpsate), into (eis) prayers of well-thankfulness toward4335 (proseuchas) [God].


4:8 Before (pro) all things (pantōn), be holding (echontes) the (tēn) stretched out (ektenē) love (agapēn) [toward God] into (eis) yourselves (heautous);


because (hoti) love (agapē) covers (kaluptei) a plethora (plēthos) of sins (hamartiōn).


4:9 [Be] into (eis) one another (allēlous) a lover of alienated ones (philoxenoi), without (aneu) murmuring (gongusmou).


4:10 Each one (hekastos), down according to as (kathōs) he received (elaben) a gracious gift (charisma), be ministering (diakonountes) [it] into (eis) yourselves (heautous), as beautiful (kaloi) house stewards (oikonomoi) of [the] varied (poikilēs) grace (charitos) of God (theou).


4:11 If (ei) anyone (tis) speaks (lalei) as (hōs) [if what he speaks are] utterances (logia) of God (theou), if (ei) anyone (tis) ministers (diakonei), [do them] as (hōs) out (ex) of strength (ischuos) which (hēs) the (ho) God (theos) choreographs (chorēgei);


in order that (hina) the (ho) God (theos), to whom (hō) is (estin) the (hē) glory (doxa) and (kai) the (to) power (kratos), may be glorified (doxazētai) in (en) all things (pasin) through (dia) Jesus (Iēsou) Christ (Christou), into (eis) the (tous) ages (aiōnas) of the (tōn) ages (aiōnōn), truly (amēn)!


4:12 Beloved ones (agapētoi), do not be caused to be an outsider (mē xenizesthe) to the (tē) one burning (purōsei) among (en) you (humin), to (pros) a testing (peirasmon) causing itself to come to pass (ginomenē) to you (humin), as (hōs) of a outsider (xenou) walking together with4819 (sumbainontos) you (humin).


4:13 BUT (alla), down as (kathos) you share (koinōneite) the (tois) sufferings (pathēmasin) of the (tou) Christ (Christou), rejoice (chairete) that (hina) in (en) the (tē) revelation (apokalupsei) of the (tēs) glory (doxēs) of him (autou) you may be caused to rejoice (charēte) also (kai), causing yourselves to jump for joy (agalliōmenoi)!


4:14 If (ei) you are reproached (oneidizesthe) in (en) [the] name (onomati) of Christ (Christou), [you are] happy ones (makarioi), because (hoti) the (to) Spirit (pneuma) of the (tēs) glory (doxēs), [it being] the one (to) of the (tou) God (theou) also (kai), causes itself to rest up (anapauetai) upon (eph’) you (humas).


4:15 Because (gar) [let] not (mē) anyone (tis) of you (humōn) suffer (paschetō) as (hōs) a murderer (phoneus), or (ē) a thief (kleptēs), or (ē) a doer of maliciousness (kakopoios), or (ē) as (hōs) an overseer of other’s affairs (allotriepiskopos).


4:16 But (de) if (ei) [you suffer] as (hōs) a Christian (christianos), do not cause yourself to be ashamed (mē aischunesthō).


But (de) glorify (doxazetō) the (ton) God (theon) in (en) this (toutō), the (tō) name (onomati) [of Christ];


4:17 because (hoti) [it is] the (ho) time (kairos) of the (tou) judicial decision-making (krima) to cause itself to start (arxasthai), the (to) [judicial decision-making] from (apo) the (tou) house (oikou) of the (tou) God (theou).  


But (de) if (ei) first (prōton) from (aph’) us (hēmōn), what (ti) [shall be] the (to) completion (telos) of the ones (tōn) being dissuaded (apeithountōn) to the (tō) Evangelism (euangeliō) of the (tou) God (theou)?


4:18 And (kai) if (ei) the (ho) righteous one (dikaios) is made whole (sōzetai) difficultly (molis), the (ho) impious one (asebēs) and (kai) sinful one (hamartōlos) - where (pou) shall he cause himself to shine (phaneitai)?


4:19 And so (hōste) the ones (hoi) suffering (paschontes) also (kai) down according to (kata) the (to) desire (thelēma) of the (tou) God (theou), a believable (pistō) creator (ktistē), let them pass along (paratithesthōsan) the (tas) souls (psuchas) of them (autōn) in (en) [doing] good deeds (agathopoiia).
