Chapter 2


2:1 Therefore (oun), having put away (apothemenoi) everything (pasan) of malice (kakian), and (kai) everything (panta) of fish bait1388 (dolon), and (kai) acting (hupokriseis), and (kai) envying (phthonous), and (kai) all (pasas) down-talking (katalalias),


2:2 as (hōs) babies (brephē) generated at this time (artigennēta), long over (epipothēsate) the (to) logical (logikon) milk (gala) without fish bait97 (adolon);


in order that (hina) in (en) it (autō) you may be caused to grow (auxēthēte) into (eis) wholeness (sōtērian),


2:3 if (ei) you caused yourself to taste (egeusasthe) that (hoti) the (ho) lord (kurios) [is] a benevolent one (chrēstos);


2:4 to (pros) whom (hon) you are causing yourselves to come toward (proserchomenoi), a stone (lithon), a living one (zōnta)!


Truly (men), under (hupo) [authority] of mortals (anthrōpōn), [he is a stone] having received disapproval (apodedokimasmenon)!


But (de) alongside (para) to God (theō) [he is] a called out (eklekton) [stone], a reputable one (entimon).


2:5 Yourselves (autoi) also (kai), as (hōs) living (zōntes) stones (lithoi), you are being built [into] a domed-roof house3618 (oikodomeisthe), a Spirit-based (pneumatikos) house (oikos);


into (eis) a holy (hagion) priesthood (hierateuma), to bring up (anenenkai) Spirit-based (pneumatikas) sacrifices (thusias) well received toward (euprosdektous) the (tō) God (theō), through (dia) [the sake] of Jesus (Iēsous) Christ (Christou);

2:6 through the reason that (dioti) there is held around (periechei) in (en) a writing (graphē), “Behold (idou), I place (tithēmi) in (en) Zion (Siōn) an angle tip204 (akrogōniaion) stone (lithon), a called out (eklekton) [stone], a reputable one (entimon)!


And (kai) the one (ho) believing (pisteuōn) upon (ep’) him (autō), no, absolutely not may he be put down to shame (ou mē kataischunthē)!"

2:7 Therefore (oun) for you (humin) [is placed, v6] the (hē) [angle tip stone, v6] of highly esteemed value (timē), for the ones (tois) believing (pisteuousin).


But (de) [for the ones] disbelieving (apistousin), [he is, v4] a stone (lithos) which (hon) the ones (hoi) building a domed-roof house3618 (oikodomountes) disapproved (apedokimasan)!


This (houtos) [angle tip stone, v6] was caused to become (egenēthē) into (eis) a head (kephalēn) of an angle1137 (gōnias),

2:8 and (kai) a stone (lithos) of stumbling (proskommatos), and (kai) a rock (petra) of scandal (skandalou), [to the] ones who (hoi) strike (proskoptousin) the (tō) Word (logō), ones being dissuaded (apeithountes);


into (eis) which (ho) they were placed (etethēsan) also (kai).


2:9 But (de) you (humeis) [are] a called out (eklekton) genus (genos), a kingly (basileion) priesthood (hierateuma), a holy (hagion) ethnic group (ethnos), a people (laos) into (eis) an acquisition (peripoiēsin);

it so being that (hopōs) you may get out the message (exangeilēte) of the (tas) virtues (aretas) of the (tou) [one] having called (kalesantos) you (humas) out (ek) of darkness (skotous) into (eis) the (to) amazing (thaumaston) light (phōs) of Him (autou);


2:10 ones who (hoi) in time past (pote) [were] absolutely not (ou) a people (laos), but (de) [are] now (nun) a people (laos) of God (theou);


the (hoi) ones absolutely not having been given mercy (ouk ēleēmenoi), but (de) [are] now (nun) ones having been given mercy (eleēthentes)!


2:11 Beloved ones (agapētoi), I accost (parakalō) [you] as (hōs) side-housers3941 (paroikous) and (kai) sojourners (parepidēmous) to cause yourselves to hold away from (apechesthai) the (tōn) flesh-based (sarkikōn) lusts (epithumiōn), ones which (haitines) are arming themselves (strateuontai) down against (kata) the (tēs) soul (psuchēs) [of you],


2:12 you holding (echontes) the (tēn) beautiful (kalēn) behavior (anastrophēn) of you (humōn) among (en) the (tois) ethnic groups (ethnesin);


in order that (hina) in (en) which thing (hō) they talk down (katalalousin) of you (humōn) as (hōs) doers of maliciousness (kakopoiōn), out (ek) of peering upon (epopteuontes) the (tōn) beautiful (kalōn) works (ergōn) they may glorify (doxasōsin) the (ton) God (theon) in (en) a day (hēmera) of an episcopacy (episkopēs).


2:13 Be put in submission5293 (hupotagēte) to every (pasē) mortal (anthrōpinē) creature (ktisei) through (dia) [the sake] of the (ton) lord (kurion);


whether (eite) to a king (basilei), as (hōs) he being superior (huperechonti),


2:14 or whether (eite) to leaders (hēgemosin), as (hōs) they being sent (pempomenois) through (di’) him (autou) into (eis) vengeance (ekdikēsin) of doers of maliciousness (kakopoiōn).


But (de) praise (epainon) doers of good (agathopoiōn),


2:15 because (hoti) thusly (houtōs) is (estin) the (to) desire (thelēma) of the (tou) God (theou):


doing good (agathopoiountas) to muzzle (phimoun) the (tēn) ignorance (agnōsian) of the (tōn) foolish (aphronōn) mortals (anthrōpōn);


2:16 and (kai) as (hōs) free ones (eleutheroi), not (mē) holding (echontes) the (tēn) freedom (eleutherian) as (hōs) a covering over (epikalumma) of the (tēs) of malice (kakias), BUT (all’), [holding the freedom] as (hōs) slaves (douloi) of God (theou)!

2:17 Highly esteem (timēsate) all (pantas).


Love (agapate) the (tēn) brotherhood (adelphotēta).


Be made fearful (phobeisthe) of the (ton) God (theon).


Highly esteem (timate) the (ton) king (basilea).


2:18 The (hoi) householders (oiketai):


in (en) all (panti) fear (phobō)  you are being put in submission5293 (hupotassomenoi) to the (tois) [house] masters (despotais);


absolutely not (ou) only (monon) to the (tois) good ones (agathois), and (kai) gentle ones (epieikesin), BUT (alla), to the (tois) crooked ones (skoliois) also (kai)!


2:19 Because (gar) this (touto) [is] grace (charis) - if (ei) through (dia) a conscience (suneidēsin) of God (theou) anyone (tis) unrighteously (adikōs) suffering (paschōn) grief (lupas) bears up under (hupopherei) [crooked ones, v18] .


2:20 Because (gar) which (poion) calling (kleos) [is it], if (ei) you shall endure (hupomeneite) sinning (hamartanontes) and (kai) being struck with a fist (kolaphizomenoi)?


But (all’), if (ei) you shall endure (hupomeneite) doing good (agathopoiountes) and (kai) suffering (paschontes) [for it], this (touto) [is] grace (charis) alongside3844 (para) God (theō)!


2:21 Because (gar) into (eis) this (touto) you were called aloud (eklēthēte);


because (hoti) Christ (Christos) also (kai) suffered (epathen) over (huper) [the sake] of you (humōn), leaving down (hupolimpanōn) to you (humin) an underwriting (hupogrammon) in order that (hina) you may follow over (epakolouthēsēte) the (tois) steps (ichnesin) of him (autou)

2:22 who (hos) absolutely did not sin (ouk hamartian)!


But absolutely not (oude) was there found (heurethē) in (en) the (tō) mouth (stomati) of him (autou) fish bait1388 (dolos);


2:23 who (hos) being verbally abused (loidoroumenos) was absolutely not verbally abusing in opposition (ouk anteloidorei);


[who] suffering (paschōn) was absolutely not threatening (ouk ēpeilei)!


But (de) he was passing aside (paredidou) to the one (tō) judging (krinonti) righteously (dikaiōs);


2:24  who (hos) himself (autos) brought up (anēnenken) the (tas) sins (hamartias) of us (hēmōn) in (en) the (tō) body (sōmati) of him (autou) upon (epi) the (to) tree (xulon);


in order that (hina) we having caused ourselves to become away from (apogenomenoi) the (tais) sins (hamartiais) [of us], we may live (zēsōmen) to the (tē) righteousness (dikaiosunē) [of him];


of which (hou), for the (tō) bruising (mōlōpi) of him (autou), you were healed (iathēte)!


2:25 Because (gar) you were being (ēte) as (hōs) sheep (probata), ones being caused to wander (planōmenoi).


BUT (alla), now (nun) you are turned back (epestraphēte) over (epi) to the (ton) shepherd (poimena) and (kai) episcopate (episkopon) of the (tōn) souls (psuchōn) of you (humōn)!
