1 JOHN

Chapter 4

Update:  2022.03.29

1 John 4:1 (LIT/UBS4) Beloved ones (agapētoi), believe (pisteuete) not (mē) every (panti) spirit (pneumati), BUT (alla), prove (dokmazete) the (ta) spirits (pneumata), if (ei) it is (estin) [sic] out (ek)  of the (tou) God (theou);

because (hoti) many (polloi) false (pseudo) prophets (prophētai) have come out (exelēluthasin) into (eis) the (ton) cosmos (kosmon)

1 John 4:2 (LIT/UBS4) In (en) this (toutō) you know (ginōskete) the (to) Spirit (pneuma) of the (tou) God (theou):

Every (pan) spirit (pneuma) which (ho) confesses alike (homologei), Jesus (Iēsoun) Christ (Christon) having come (elēluthota) in (en) flesh (sarki), is (estin) out (ek) of the (tou) God (theou).

1 John 4:3 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) every (pan) spirit (pneuma) which (ho) does not confess alike (mē homologei), the (ton) Jesus (Iēsoun) [Christ having come in flesh, v2, RE], is absolutely not (ouk estin) out (ek) of the (tou) God (theou)

And (kai) this (touto) is (estin) the (to) [spirit, RE] of the (tou) antichrist (antichristou) which (ho) you have heard (akēkoate) that (hoti) it causes itself to come (erchetai), and (kai) now (nun) already (ēdē) is (estin) in (en) the (tō) cosmos (kosmō)

1 John 4:4 (LIT/UBS4) You (humeis) are (este) out (ek) of the (tou) God (theou), little born ones (teknia), and (kai) you have conquered (nenikēkate) them (autous)

Because (hoti), [a] greater one (meizōn) is (estin) the (ho) [Spirit of the God, v2, RE] in (en) you (humin), than (ē) the (ho) [spirit of the antichrist, v3, RE] in (en) the (tō) cosmos (kosmō).

(For the Spirit of God being in Christ, and the Spirit of Christ being in those who believe upon his name, making them more than conquerors now, see Mat. 10:25; Acts 1:4-8; Rom. 8:9-11, 37; 1 Cor. 12:6; 2 Cor. 2:14, 13:3-5; Gal. 1:16; Eph. 1:19-20, 4:13, 6:13-18; Phil. 2:13, 4:13; Col. 1:27-29; 1 Thes. 2:13; 2 Tim. 1:7; 1 John 4:4, 5:4-5)

1 John 4:5 (LIT/UBS4) They (autoi) are (eisin) out (ek) of the (tou) cosmos (kosmou).

Through (dia) this (touto) they speak (lalousin) out (ek) of the (tou) cosmos (kosmou), and (kai) the (ho) cosmos (kosmon) hears (akouei) them (autōn).

1 John 4:6 (LIT/UBS4) We (hēmeis) are (esmen) out (ek) of the (tou) God (theou).

The one (ho) knowing (ginōskōn) the (ton) God (theon) hears (akouei) us (hēmōn).

Whoever (hos) absolutely does not (ouk) hear (akouei) us (hēmōn) is (estin) absolutely not (ouk) out (ek) of the (tou) God (theou)

Out (ek) of this (toutou) we know (ginōskomen) the (to) Spirit (pneuma) of the (tēs) Truth (alētheias), and (kai) the (to) spirit (pneuma) of the (tēs) Wanderer (planēs)!

(For the devil, the *god of this cosmos, coming to steal, kill, and destroy the assembly (ekklēsia), the one body of Christ, and all mortalkind, to cause them to wander away from the one true God and his Word, see Mat. 6:13, 13:19; Mark 1:13a, 4:15, 13:5-6; Luke 13:16, 21:8, 22:3, 31; John 8:44, 10:10a, 13:27; Acts 5:3; 1 Cor. 7:5, 31b; 2 Cor. 2:11, *4:4, 11:13-15; Gal. 1:4; Eph. 4:11-14, 6:11-16; 1 Thes. 2:17-18; 2 Thes. 2:7-12; 1 Tim. 4:1-2, 5:13-15; 2 Tim. 3:13; 1 John 3:11-13, 4:1-6, 5:19; 2 John 1:7; Rev. 2:9, 12-15, 20, 12:7-17; 13:14, 18:21-23, 19:20, 20:3-10)

1 John 4:7 (LIT/UBS4) Beloved ones (agapētoi), we should love (agapōmen) one another (allēlous), because (hoti) the (hē) love (agapē) is (estin) out (ek) of the (tou) God (theou).

And (kai) everyone (pas), the one (ho) loving (agapōn) [another, RE], he has been generated (gegennētai) out (ek) of the (tou) God (theou), and (kai) he knows (ginōskei) the (ton) God (theon).

1 John 4:8 (LIT/UBS4) The one (ho) not (mē) loving (agapōn) absolutely did not know (ouk egnō) the (ton) God (theon), because (hoti) the (ho) God (theos) is (estin) love (agapē)

(For the God, under his new covenant, being IN believers, and he working IN and THROUGH them, see Lev. 26:11-12; Ezek. 11:19-20, 36:25-27; Mat. 13:33; Luke 17:20-21; John 3:3-8, 14:20-21, 26, 17:14-21; Rom. 8:8-11; 1 Cor. 3:16-17, 6:19-20; 2 Cor. 4:3-7, 6:14-7:1, 13:3-5, 14; Gal. 1:15-16, 2:20, 4:18-19; Eph. 2:17-22, 3:14-19; Col. 1:27; 2 Tim. 1:14; Heb. 3:6, 13:20-21; 1 John 3:23-24, 4:7-8, 15-16)

1 John 4:9 (LIT/UBS4) In (en) this (toutō) was manifested (ephanerōthē) the (hē) love (agapē) of the (tou) God (theou) among (en) us (hēmin):

because (hoti) the (ho) God (theos) has sent (apestalken) the (ton) son (huion) of him (autou), the (ton) only genus3439 (monogenē), into (eis) the (ton) cosmos (kosmon), in order that (hina) we may live (zēsōmen) through (di’) him (autou)

1 John 4:10 (LIT/UBS4) In (en) this (toutō) is (estin) the (hē) love (agapē):

absolutely not (ouch) that (hoti) we (hēmeis) have loved (ēgapēkamen) the (ton) God (theon), BUT (all’), that (hoti) he (autos) loved (ēgapēsen) us (hēmas), and (kai) he sent (apesteilen) the (ton) son (huion) of him (autou) [to be] [an] appeasement (hilasmon) about (peri) the (tōn) sins (hamartiōn) of us (hēmōn)!

1 John 4:11 (LIT/UBS4) Beloved ones (agapētoi), if (ei) the (ho) God (theos) loved (ēgapēsen) us (hēmas) thusly (houtōs), we (hēmeis) also (kai) owe (opheilomen) to love (agapan) one another (allēlous)

1 John 4:12 (LIT/UBS4) Absolutely not one (oudeis), ever at any time (pōpote), has made himself [a] spectator (tetheatai) of God (theon)!

If perhaps (ean) we may love (agapōmen) one another (allēlous), the (ho) God (theos) stays (menei) in (en) us (hēmin), and (kai) the (hē) love (agapē) of him (autou) is (estin) in (en) us (hēmin), it having been made complete (teteleiōmenē)

1 John 4:13 (LIT/UBS4) In (en) this (toutō) we know (ginōskomen) that (hoti) we stay (menomen) in (en) him (autō), and (kai) he (autos) [stays, RE] in (en) us (hēmin), because (hoti) he has given (dedōken) to us (hēmin) out (ek) of the (tou) Spirit (pneumatos) of him (autou).

1 John 4:14 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) we (hēmeis) have made ourselves spectators (tetheametha), and (kai) we witness (marturoumen), that (hoti) the (ho) Father (patēr) has sent (apestalken) the (ton) son (huion), [the] savior4990 (sōtēra) of the (tou) cosmos (kosmou).

(Both the God and his son Christ Jesus are referred to as saviors by the apostles. The clear distinction the holy scriptures make between the roles of the two is that the God prepared the plan and the schematic for our salvation (Heb. 3:1-4; Rom. 3:23-25; Eph. 1:7-9; Luke 1:47; 1 Tim. 1:1, 2:3, 4:10; 2 Tim. 1:9; Tit. 1:2-3, 2:10, 3:4; Jude 1:25, Rev. 7:10), while Christ Jesus, who caused himself to follow God’s plan and schematic, caused himself to become God’s enabling one, or instrument of our salvation (Heb. 5:9; Luke 2:11; John 4:42; Acts 5:31, 13:23; Eph. 5:23; Phil. 3:20; 2 Tim. 1:10; Tit. 1:2-4, 2:13, 3:6; 2 Pet. 1:1, 1:11, 2:20, 3:2, 18; 1 John 4:14).

1 John 4:15 (LIT/UBS4) (LIT/UBS4) If perhaps (ean) whoever (hos) may confess alike (homologēsē), that (hoti) Jesus (Iēsous) is (estin) the (ho) Son (huios) of the (tou) God (theou), the (ho) God (theos) stays (menei) in (en) him (autō), and (kai) he (autos) [stays, RE] in (en) to the (tō) God (theō).

1 John 4:16 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) we (hēmeis) have known (egnōkamen), and (kai) have believed (pepisteukamen) the (tēn) love (agapēn) which (hēn) the (ho) God (theos) holds (echei) in (en) us (hēmin).

The (ho) God (theos) is (estin) [a] loving one (agapē), and (kai) the one (ho) staying (menōn) in (en) the (tē) love (agapē) stays (menei) in (en) the (tō) God (thēo), and (kai) the (ho) God (theos) stays (menei) in (en) him (autō)

(For the God, under his new covenant, being IN believers, and he working IN and THROUGH them, see Lev. 26:11-12; Ezek. 11:19-20, 36:25-27; Mat. 13:33; Luke 17:20-21; John 3:3-8, 14:20-21, 26, 17:14-21; Rom. 8:8-11; 1 Cor. 3:16-17, 6:19-20; 2 Cor. 4:3-7, 6:14-7:1, 13:3-5, 14; Gal. 1:15-16, 2:20, 4:18-19; Eph. 2:17-22, 3:14-19; Col. 1:27; 2 Tim. 1:14; Heb. 3:6, 13:20-21; 1 John 3:23-24, 4:7-8, 15-16)

(For what is God’s prophesied true “tent”, his new holy place under his new covenant, the prophesied promise of the Father to place himself into believers to live in them as his new permanent domicile, a true “tent” not built with mortal’s hands but with his own hand, see Ex. 15:17; 2 Sam. 7:5-16; Isa. 8:14; Ezek. 11:16; Joel 2:28-29; Amos 9:11-12; Mat. 3:11, 16:18, 26:61, 27:39-40; Mark 14:58, 15:29; Luke 3:21-22, 24:49; *John 2:19-22, 3:1-, 4:20-24, 7:37-39, 14:2, *23; Acts 1:4-5, 2:16-18, 33, 38-39, *7:44-50, *15:16-18, *17:24, *20:28; *Rom. 8:9-11, 12:4-5; 1 Cor. *3:16-17, *6:19-20, 10:16-17, 12:12-28; *2 Cor. 5:1, *6:16-18; Gal. 3:14, 22; Eph. 1:13-14, 22-23, *2:17-22, 3:6, 4:11-16, 5:30-32; Col. 1:18-27, 2:6-10, 3:15; *1 Thes. 5:9-11; *1 Tim. 3:15; *2 Tim. 1:14; Heb. *3:4-6, 8:2, *9:11-15, *24, 10:21, 36; 1 Pet. 2:4-5; 1 John 4:12-16; Rev. 3:12, 7:15, 11:19, *13:6, *21:3, 22)

1 John 4:17 (LIT/UBS4) In (en) this (toutō) the (hē) love (agapē) has been made complete (teteleiōtai) together with (meth’) us (hēmō), in order that (hina) we may have (echōmen) boldness (parrēsian) in (en) the (tē) day (hēmera) of the (tēs) judgment (kriseōs);

because (hoti) down according to as (kathōs) that one (ekeinos) is (estin), we (hēmeis) also (kai) are (esmen), in (en) the (tō) cosmos (kosmō) to this (toutō)

1 John 4:18 (LIT/UBS4) Fear (phobos) is (estin) absolutely not (ouk) in (en) the (tē) love (agapē)

BUT (all’), because (hoti) the (ho) fear (phobos) holds (echei) [the one, v16, RE] separate (kolasin) [from God, v16, RE], the (hē) complete (teleia) loving one (agapē) throws (ballei) out (exō) the (ton) fear (phobon)

But (de) the one (ho) causing himself to fear (phoboumenos) has absolutely not been made complete (ou teteleiōtai) in (en) the (tē) love (agapē)!

(For more about how ones become separated from God, paying close attention to associated contexts, see Mat. 3:11-12, 12:30, 13:24-30, 13:37-43, 13:47-51, 22:1-14, 25:24-46; Luke 3:15-17, 11:23, 16:19-31, 22:31-32; John 11:49-52, 15:1-6; Acts 4:13-21; 2 Cor. 6:16-18; 2 Pet. 2:9; 1 John 4:18; Rev. 16:12-16.)

1 John 4:19 (LIT/UBS4) We (hēmeis) should love (agapōmen) because (hoti) he (autos) loved (ēgapēsen) us (hēmas) first (prōtos).

1 John 4:20 (LIT/UBS4) If perhaps (ean) anyone (tis) may say (eipē) that (hoti), “I love (agapō) the (ton) God (theon)”, and (kai) he may despise (misē) the (ton) brother (adelphon) of him (autou), he is (estin) [a] false one (pseustēs).

Because (gar) the one (ho) not (mē) loving (agapōn) the (ton) brother (adelphon) of him (autou) whom (hon) he has gazed at (heōraken), he can absolutely not inherently power himself (ou dunatai) to love (agapan) the (ton) God (theon) whom (hon) he has absolutely not gazed at (ouch heōraken)!?

1 John 4:21 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) this (tautēn) [is] the (tēn) injunction (entolēn) we have (echomen) from (ap’) him (autou):

that (hina) the one (ho) loving (agapōn) the (ton) God (theon) should love (agapa) the (ton) brother (adelphon) of him (autou) also (kai).

(For who has gazed at, and who has not gazed at, the God the Father, see John 1:18, 5:37, 6:46, 14:7-11, 15:23-25, 20:28-29; 1 John 1:3, 4:20-21; 3 John 1:11)
