1 CORINTHIANS

Chapter 12

Update:  2023.12.19

1 Cor. 12:1 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) about (peri) the (tōn) Spirit-based things (pneumatikōn), brothers (adelphoi), I absolutely do not desire (ou thelō) you (humas) to be ignorant (agnoein)!

1 Cor. 12:2 (LIT/UBS4) You have seen (oidate) that (hoti) when (hote) you were being (ēte) ethnic groups (ethnē) toward (pros) the (ta) idols (eidōla), the (ta) voiceless ones (aphōna), perhaps (an) as often as (hōs) you were being led (ēgesthe) you were being led away (apagomenoi);

1 Cor. 12:3 (LIT/UBS4) through which (dio) [sake, AE] I make known (gnōrizō) to you (humin) that (hoti) absolutely not one (oudeis) speaking (lalōn) in (en) Spirit (pneumati) of God (theou) says (legei), “[A] cursed-up one (anathema) [is] Jesus (Iēsous)!”

And (kai) absolutely not one (oudeis) can inherently power himself (dunatai) to enunciate (eipein), “Lord (kurios) Jesus (Iēsous),” if (ei) not (mē) [enunciating, RE] in (en) holy (hagiō) Spirit (pneumati)!

(For the normal and common practice of the church to speak in tongues to pray to God, see Mark 16:17; Acts 2:4-11, 10:46, 19:6; Rom. 8:26-27; 1 Cor. 12:3, 30, 13:1, 14:2-28, 39; Eph. 6:18; Col. 4:3; Jude 1:20)

1 Cor. 12:4 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) there are (eisin) distributions (diaireseis) of gracious gifts (charismatōn), but (de) the (to) same (auto) Spirit (pneuma).

1 Cor. 12:5 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) there are (eisin) distributions (diaireseis) of ministries (diakoniōn), and (kai) the (ho) same (autos) lord (kurios).

1 Cor. 12:6 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) there are (eisin) distributions (diaireseis) of energizings (energēmatōn), but (de) the (ho) same (autos) God (theos), the one (ho) energizing (energōn) all (panta) of the (ta) [energizings, RE] in (en) all (pasin)

(For the Spirit of God being in Christ, and the Spirit of Christ being in those who believe upon his name, making them more than conquerors now, see Mat. 10:25; Acts 1:4-8; Rom. 8:9-11, 37; 1 Cor. 12:6; 2 Cor. 2:14, 13:3-5; Gal. 1:16; Eph. 1:19-20, 4:13, 6:13-18; Phil. 2:13, 4:13; Col. 1:27-29; 1 Thes. 2:13; 2 Tim. 1:7; 1 John 4:4, 5:4-5)

 Now apostle Paul changes from a broad scope in verse 6,

“all” (panta) in (en) all (pasin)" collectively

            - distributions of gracious things (charismata), v. 4

            - distributions of ministeries  (diakonian), v. 5

            - distributions of energizings (energematon), v. 6

to a narrow scope in verse 7,

to each” (hekasto) individually.

to each (hekasto) of v. 7 of the all (pasin) of v. 6.

1 Cor. 12:7 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) to each (hekastō) is given (didotai) the (hē) manifestation (phanerōsis) of the (tou) Spirit (pneumatos), toward (pros) [the sake, AE] of the (to) [manifestation, RE] being mutually beneficial (sumpheron).

Introduction to the nine manifestations, which "each" (hekasto) can manifest:

1 Cor. 12:8a (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) truly (men), to the one (ho) [a] Word (logos) of wisdom (sophias) is given (didotai) through (dia) the (tou) Spirit (pneumatos)!

1 Cor. 12:8b (LIT/UBS4) But (de) to another (allō) [a] Word (logos) of knowledge (gnoseos) [is given, v8a, RE], down on account (kata) of the (to) same (auto) Spirit (pneuma).

(For all those who have received a new birth above in God’s promised gift of his paternal holy Spirit (Lev. 26:11-12; John 3:3-8; Acts 1:4; 2 Cor. 6:16-18; *1 Pet. 1:23), and for those paternal sons being taught by God (YHWH) himself, see Isa. 54:13; Jer. 31:31-34; Luke 12:12; John 5:19-20, 6:45, 14:26, 15:26, 16:13-14; 1 Cor. 1:4-8, 2:10, 12:8; 2 Cor. 5:19; Gal. 1:12; Eph. 4:20-21; 1 Thes. 4:9; 2 Tim. 2:7; Heb. 8:8-12, 10:16-17; James 1:5-6; 1 John 2:27, 5:20)

1 Cor. 12:9a (LIT/UBS4) To one of another kind (heterō) belief (pistis) [is given, v8a, RE], in (en) the (tō) same (autō) Spirit (pneumati).

1 Cor. 12:9b (LIT/UBS4) But (de) to another (allō) gracious gifts (charismata) of healings (iamatōn) [are given, v8a, RE], in (en) the (tō) one (heni) Spirit (pneumati).

1 Cor. 12:10a (LIT/UBS4) But (de) to another (allō) energizing's (energēmata) of works of inherent power (dunameōn) [are given, v8a, RE].

1 Cor. 12:10b (LIT/UBS4) But (de) to another (allō) prophecy (prophēteia) [is given, v8a, RE].

1 Cor. 12:10c (LIT/UBS4) But (de) to another (allō) thorough judgments (diakriseis) of spirits (pneumatōn) [are given, v 8a, RE].

1 Cor. 12:10d (LIT/UBS4) To one of another kind (heterō) genera (genē) of tongues (glōssōn) [are given, v7, 8a].

1 Cor. 12:10e (LIT/UBS4) But (de) to another (allō) interpretation (hermēneia) of tongues (glōssōn) [are given, v8a, RE].

1 Cor. 12:11 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (to) one (hen) and (kai) the (to) same (auto) Spirit (pneuma) energizes (energei) all (panta) of these (tauta) [manifestations, v7, RE], distributing (diairoun) to each (hekastō) his own (idia) [manifestation, v7, RE], down as (kathos) [each, RE] causes himself to wish (bouletai).

1 Cor. 12:12 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) so be it down as (kathaper) the (to) body (sōma) is (estin) one (hen) and (kai) holds (echei) many (polla) members (melē), but (de) all (panta) of the (ta) members (melē) of the (tou) body (sōmatos) being (onta) many (polla) are (estin) one (hen) body (sōma), thusly (houtōs) [is] the (ho) Christ (Christos) also (kai).

1 Cor. 12:13 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) in (en) one (heni) Spirit (pneumati) we (hēmeis) all (pantes) also (kai) were baptized (ebaptisthēmen) into (eis) one (hen) body (sōma), whether (eite) Judeans (Ioudaioi), whether (eite) Hellenes (Hellēnes), whether (eite) slaves (douloi), whether (eite) free ones (eleutheroi).

And (kai) all (pantes) were caused to drink (epotisthēmen) one (hen) Spirit (pneuma).

1 Cor. 12:14 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) because (gar) the (to) body (sōma) is (estin) absolutely not (ouk) one (hen) member (melos), BUT (alla), many (polla),

1 Cor. 12:15 (LIT/UBS4) if perhaps (ean) the (ho) foot (pous) may enunciate (eipē), “Because (hoti) I am (eimi) absolutely not (ouk) [a] hand (cheir), I am (eimi) absolutely not (ouk) out (ek) of the (tou) body (sōmatos)!”, absolutely not (ou)!

 Besides (para) this (touto), is (estin) [the foot, RE] absolutely not (ouk) out (ek) the (tou) body (sōmatos)!?

1 Cor. 12:16 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) if perhaps (ean) the (to) ear (ous) may enunciate (eipē), “Because (hoti) I am (eimi) absolutely not (ouk) [an] eye (ophthalmos), I am (eimi) absolutely not (ouk) out (ek) of the (tou) body (sōmatos)!”, absolutely not (ou)!

Besides (para) this (touto), is (estin) [the ear, RE] absolutely not (ouk) out (ek) of the (tou) body (sōmatos)!?

1 Cor. 12:17 (LIT/UBS4) If (ei) the (to) whole (holon) body (sōma) [was] [an] eye (ophthalmus), from where (pou) [is] the (hē) hearing (akoē)?

If (ei) [the] whole (holon) [body, RE] [was] hearing (akoē), from where (pou) [is] the (hē) smelling (osphrēsis)?

1 Cor. 12:18 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) now, at this moment (nuni), the (ho) God (theos) caused himself to place (etheto) the (ta) members (melē), each (hekaston) one (hen) of them (autōn), in (en) to the (tō) body (sōmati) down according to as (kathōs) he desired (ēthelēsen)!

1 Cor. 12:19 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) if (ei) the (ta) [body, RE] was being (ēn) all (panta) one (hen) member (melos), from where (pou) [is] the (to) body (sōma)?

1 Cor. 12:20 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) now (nun), truly (men), [there, AE] [are] many (polla) members (melē) but (de) one (hen) body (sōma)!

1 Cor. 12:21 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) eye (ophthalmos) can absolutely not inherently power itself (ou dunatai) to enunciate (eipien) to the (tē) hand (cheiri), “I absolutely do not have (ouk echō) [a] need (chreian) of you (sou)!”;

or (ē) again (palin) the (hē) head (kephalē) to the (tois) feet (posin), “I absolutely do not have (ouk echō) [a] need (chreian) of you (humōn)!”

1 Cor. 12:22 (LIT/UBS4) BUT (alla), the (ta) member (melē) of the (tou) body (sōmatos) you are concluding (dokounta) to be under control (huparchein) of [a] disability (asthenestera), he is (estin) [a] much (pollō) more (mallon) necessary one (anankaia)!

1 Cor. 12:23 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) those (ha) [members, v22, RE] of the (tou) body (sōmatos) we conclude (dokoumen) to be (einai) dishonorable (atimotera), to these (toutois) we place around (peritithemen) [them, AE] abundant (perissoteran) honor (timēn).

And (kai) of the (ta) indecent (aschēmona) [members, v22, RE] of us (hēmōn), [each one, v18, RE] has (echei) abundant (perissoteran) well-planning (euschēmosunēn).

1 Cor. 12:24 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) of the (ta) virtuous (euschēmona) [members, v22, RE] of us (hēmōn), <does> [each one, v18, RE] absolutely not have (ou echei) [a] need (chreian)!?

BUT (alla), the (ho) God (theos) has amalgamated together (sunekerasen) the (to) body (sōma), he having given (dous) abundant (perissoteran) honor (timēn) to the (tō) [members, v22, RE] lacking (husteroumenō);

1 Cor. 12:25 (LIT/UBS4) in order that (hina) there may not be (mē ē) [a] schism (schisma) in (en) the (tō) body (sōmati), BUT (alla), the (ta) members (melē) may worry (merimnōsin) the (to) same (auto) over (huper) [the sake, AE] of one another (allēlōn)!

(For the teachings and ministry of Jesus Christ affecting division among the people of Israel, see Mat. 3:10-12, 10:34-39; Luke 2:34, 3:9, 16-17, 12:49-53; John 7:43, 9:16, 10:19, 15:6; 2 Thes. 1:8-9; Heb. 1:7; and division among the ethnic groups, see 1 Cor. 1:10-11, 11:18-19, 12:25)

1 Cor. 12:26 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) whether (eite) one (hen) member (melos) suffers (paschei), all (panta) of the (ta) members (melē) suffer together with (sumpaschei) [it, AE];

whether (eite) one (hen) member (melos) is glorified (doxazetai), all (panta) of the (ta) members (melē) rejoice together with (sunchairei) [it, AE]!

1 Cor. 12:27 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) you (humeis) are (este) [the] body (sōma) of Christ (Christou), and (kai) members (melē) out (ek) of [a] part (merous) [of it, AE],

1 Cor. 12:28 (LIT/UBS4) and (kai) [members, v27, RE] which (hous), truly (men), the (ho) God (theos) caused himself to place (etheto) in (en) to the (tē) assembly (ekklēsia):

(For what is God’s prophesied true “tent”, his new holy place under his new covenant, the prophesied promise of the Father to place himself into believers to live in them as his new permanent domicile, a true “tent” not built with mortal’s hands but with his own hand, see Ex. 15:17; 2 Sam. 7:5-16; Isa. 8:14; Ezek. 11:16; Joel 2:28-29; Amos 9:11-12; Mat. 3:11, 16:18, 26:61, 27:39-40; Mark 14:58, 15:29; Luke 3:21-22, 24:49; *John 2:19-22, 3:1-, 4:20-24, 7:37-39, 14:2, *23; Acts 1:4-5, 2:16-18, 33, 38-39, *7:44-50, *15:16-18, *17:24, *20:28; *Rom. 8:9-11, 12:4-5; 1 Cor. *3:16-17, *6:19-20, 10:16-17, 12:12-28; *2 Cor. 5:1, *6:16-18; Gal. 3:14, 22; Eph. 1:13-14, 22-23, *2:17-22, 3:6, 4:11-16, 5:30-32; Col. 1:18-27, 2:6-10, 3:15; *1 Thes. 5:9-11; *1 Tim. 3:15; *2 Tim. 1:14; Heb. *3:4-6, 8:2, *9:11-15, *24, 10:21, 36; 1 Pet. 2:4-5; 1 John 4:12-16; Rev. 3:12, 7:15, 11:19, *13:6, *21:3, 22)

second (deuteron), [...] of prophets (prophētas);

third (triton), [...] of teachers (didaskalous);

thereupon (epeita) [...] of ones of inherently powered works (dunameis);

thereupon (epeita) [...] of ones of gracious gifts (charismata) of healings (iamatōn);

[thereupon, ER] [...] of ones of receptionists (antilēmpseis);

[thereupon, ER] [...] of ones of directors (kubernēseis);

[thereupon, ER] [...] of ones of genera (genē) of tongues (glōssōn)!

1 Cor. 12:29 (LIT/UBS4) All (pantes) [are] not (mē) apostles (apostoloi)

All (pantes) [are] not (mē) prophets (prophētai)

All (pantes) [are] not (mē) teachers (didaskaloi)

All (pantes) [are] not (mē) ones of inherently powered works (dunameis)!

1 Cor. 12:30 (LIT/UBS4) All (pantes) do not have (mē echousin) gracious gifts (charismata) of healings (iamatōn)!

All (pantes) do not speak (mē lalousin) tongues (glōssais)

All (pantes) do not interpret (mē diermēneuousin)!

1 Cor. 12:31 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) be zealous (zēloute) of the (ta) greater (meizona) of the (ta) gracious things (charismata).

And (kai) yet (eti) down according to (kath’) hyperbole (huperbolēn) I thoroughly show (deiknumi) to you (humin) [a/the] way (hodon).
