Chapter 8

Update:  2024.09.14

Luke 8:1 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) it caused itself to come to pass (egeneto) in (en) the (tō) next [days, AE] on down (kathexēs), he (autos) was wayfaring down through (diōdeuen kata) [each, AE] city (polin) and (kai) village (kōmēn) also (kai), preaching (kērussōn) and (kai) causing himself to evangelize (euangelizomenos) the (tēn) Kingdom932 (basileian) of the (tou) God (theou).

And (kai) the (hoi) twelve (dōdeka) [were] together with (sun) him (autō).

Luke 8:2 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) certain (tines) females (gunaikes) who (hai) were being (ēsan) given therapy (tetherapeumenai) from (apo) evil (ponērōn) spirits (pneumatōn) and (kai) disabilities (astheneiōn), Mariam (Maria), being called aloud (kaloumenē) the (hē) Magdalene (Magdalēnē) [Mariam, RE], from (aph’) whom (hēs) seven (hepta) little demons (daimonia) had come out (exelēluthei),

Luke 8:3 (LIT/UBS4) and (kai) Joanna (Iōanna), [the] female (gunē) of Chuza (Chouza), [a] guide over the way (epitropou) of Herod (Hērōdou), and (kai) Susanna (Sousanna), and (kai) many (pollai) [females, RE] of another kind (heterai), [females, RE] who (haitines) were ministering (diēkonoun) to them (autois) out (ek) of the (tōn) things being under control (huparchontōn) to them (autais).

Luke 8:4 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) of [a] large (pollou) crowd (ochlou) being together (suniontos), and (kai) of the ones (tōn) down (kata) [each, AE] city (polin) causing themselves to go over (epiporeuomenōn) to (pros) him (auton), he enunciated (eipen) through (dia) [a] parable (parabolēs):

Luke 8:5 (LIT/UBS4) “The one (ho) sowing (speirōn) went out (exēlthen) [in, RE] the (tou) [time, AE] to sow (speirai) the (ton) seed (sporon) of him (autou)

And (kai) in (en) the (tō) [time, AE] of him (auton) to sow (speirein), truly (men), [there was, AE] one [sowing, RE] which (ho) fell (epesen) alongside (para) the (tēn) way (hodon), and (kai) it was walked down upon (katepatēthē)!

And (kai) the (ta) flying animals (peteina) of the (tou) heaven (ouranou) devoured (katephagen) it (auto).

Luke 8:6 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) another (heteron) [sowing, v5, RE] fell down (katepesen) upon (epi) the (tēn) rock (petran).

And (kai) having sprung up (phuen) it was dried out (exēranthē), through (dia) [the sake, AE] of the (to) [seed, v5, RE] to have (echein) no (mē) moisture (ikmada).

Luke 8:7 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) another (heteron) [sowing, v5, RE] fell (epesen) in (en) amidst (mesō) the (tōn) thorns (akanthōn).

And (kai) they having been caused to spring up together with (sumphueisai) [[the] sowing, v5, ER], the (hai) thorns (akanthai) choked it away (apepnixan auto).

Luke 8:8 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) another (heteron) [sowing, v5, ER] fell (epesen) into (eis) the (tēn) soil (gēn), the (tēn) good (agathēn) [soil, RE].

And (kai) having sprung up (phuen) [the good soil, RE] made (epoiēsen) produce (karpon), [a] hundred times (hekatontaplasiona).

Saying (legōn) these things (tauta), he was sounding (ephōnei), “The (ho) [disciple, v9, RE] having (echōn) ears (ōta) to hear (akouein), hear (akouetō)!”

Luke 8:9 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (hoi) disciples (mathētai) of him (autou) were inquiring (epērōtōn) of him (auton), “What (tis) may possibly be (eiē) this (hautē), the (hē) parable (parabolē)!?”

Luke 8:10 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) [Jesus, v7:40, RE] enunciated (eipen), “To you (humin) it has been given (dedotai) to know (gnōnai) the (ta) mysteries (mustēria) of the (tēs) Kingdom932 (basileias) of the (tou) God (theou).

But (de) to the (tois) remaining (loipois) [crowd, v4, RE] [I enunciate, v4, RE] in (en) parables (parabolais);

in order that (hina) they being ones seeing (blepontes), they may not see (mē blepōsin) [[the] parables, RE], and (kai) they being ones hearing (akouontes), they may not put [[the] parables, RE] together (mē suniōsin)!

(In Luke 17:20-21, of Jesus responding to an inquiry from the Pharisees about when the Kingdom of the God causes itself to come, he plainly states that it comes “within you!”  Throughout the remainder of this chapter, Jesus Christ thoroughly explains to his disciples about what is the Kingdom of the God, and when, and where, and how does the Kingdom of the God come into a believer.  See Mark's version, Mark 4, for some differences in his record.)

Luke 8:11 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) this (hautē) is (estin) the (hē) parable (parabolē):

The (ho) seed (sporos) is (estin) the (ho) Word (logos) of the (tou) God (theou).

Luke 8:12 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the ones (hoi) [of [a] large crowd, v4, RE]  are (eisin) the ones (hoi) alongside (para) the (tēn) way (hodon) having heard (akousantes) [the Word, v11, RE].

Thereafter (eita) the (ho) diabolical one (diabolos) causes himself to come (erchetai), and (kai) he steals (airei) the (ton) Word (logos) from (apo) the (tēs) heart (kardias) of them (autōn);

in order that2443 (hina) [the ones alongside the way, RE] not having believed (mē pisteusantes) [the Word, RE] may [not, RE] be made whole (sōthōsin)!

(See Rom. 10 for apostle Paul’s teaching about how being made whole comes through belief in God’s Word about Christ Jesus, and about how belief comes into a person’s heart through hearing God’s Word (Rom. 10:17).

Luke 8:13 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the ones (hoi) upon (epi) the (tēs) rock (petras), ones who (hoi) when perhaps (hotan) they may hear (akousōsin) [the Word, v11, RE] they cause themselves to receive (dechontai) the (ton) Word (logon) with (meta) joy (charas), these ones (houtoi) also (kai) absolutely do not have (echousin) [a] root (rhizan)!

[These ones, RE] [are] ones who (hoi) believe (pisteuousin) for (pros) [a] time (kairon), and (kai) in (en) [a] time (kairō) of testing (peirasmou) they cause themselves to stand away (aphistantai).

Luke 8:14 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (to) [Word, v11, RE] having fallen (peson) into (eis) the (tas) thorns (akanthas), these ones (houtoi) are (eisin) the ones (hoi) having heard (akousantes).

And (kai) they causing themselves to go along (poreuomenoi) under (hupo) [authority, AE] of worries (merimnōn), and (kai) of wealth (ploutou), and (kai) of hedonisms (hēdonōn) of the (tou) life (biou), they are choked together with (sumpnigontai) [these thorns, RE], and (kai) they absolutely do not bring [their belief and wholeness, v12, RE] to completion (ou telesphorousin)!

(For the gracious things of God which are given to us through our belief having been made complete, see Luke 1:45; John 17:23; Rom. 6:16-23; Heb. 10:14, 11:1-12:2; 1 John 2:5, 4:12; 1 Pet. 1:3-11.)

Luke 8:15 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (to) [Word, v11, RE] [having fallen, v14, RE] in (en) the (tē) beautiful (kalē) soil (gē), these ones (houtoi) [in the beautiful soil, RE] are (eisin) ones who (hoitines), having heard (akousantes) the (ton) Word (logon) in (en) [a] beautiful (kalē) and (kai) good (agathē) heart (kardia), hold it down (katechousin), and (kai) in (en) endurance (hupomonē) they bring forth produce (karpophorousin).

Luke 8:16 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) absolutely not one (oudeis), having taken hold (hapsas) of [a] lamp (luchnon), covers (kaluptei) it (auton) [with, AE] [a] vessel (skeuei), or (ē) puts (tithēsin) [it, RE] down under (hupokatō) [a] recliner (klinēs)!

BUT (all’), he puts (tithēsin) [it, RE] upon (epi) [a] lamp stand (luchnias), in order that (hina) the ones (hoi) causing themselves to enter in (eisporeuomenoi) may see (blepōsin) the (to) light (phōs)!

Luke 8:17 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) there is (estin) absolutely not (ou) [a] hidden (krupton) [mystery, v10, RE] which (ho) shall absolutely not cause itself to become manifested (ou phaneron genēsetai), which (ho) no (mē), absolutely not cannot be made known (ou gnōsthē), and (kai) may come (elthē) into (eis) something manifested (phaneron)!

(For Jesus Christ being prophesied as a great light coming, the one who would shed light on the knowledge of God’s Word for a people being caused to sit down in darkness, see Isa. 9:1-2, 49:1-6; Mat. 4:12-16, 10:26-27; *Mark 4:21-23; Luke 1:76-79, 2:25-32, 8:16-17, 11:33, 12:1-3; John 1:1-14, 3:1-21, 8:12, 9:5, 11:9-10, 12:34-36, 41-46; Acts 13:46-47, 26:22-23; 2 Cor. 4:1-6; Eph. 5:8, 13, 14; Col. 1:12; 1 Thes. 5:5; 1 Pet. 2:9; 2 Pet. 1:19; 1 John 2:8-10.)

Luke 8:18 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), look at (blepete) how (pōs) you hear (akouete).

Because (gar) perhaps (an) to whoever (hos) may have (echē) [beautiful soil, v15, RE], to him (autō) [the mysteries of the Kingdom of the God, v10, RE] shall be given (dothēsetai);

and (kai) perhaps (an) to whoever (hos) may not have (mē echē) [beautiful soil, v15, RE], whatever (ho) he concludes (dokei) to have (echein) shall be removed (kai arthēsetai) also (kai) from (ap’) him (autou)!”

Luke 8:19 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (hē) mother (mētēr) and (kai) the (hoi) brothers (adelphoi) of him (autou) caused themselves to become alongside (paregeneto) to (pros) him (auton), and (kai) they were absolutely not being inherently powered (ouk ēdunanto) to come together with (suntuchein) him (autō) through (dia) [the sake, AE] of the (ton) crowd (ochlon).

Luke 8:20 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) it was reported (apēngelē) to him (autō), “The (hē) mother (mētēr) of you (sou) and (kai) the (hoi) brothers (adelphoi) of you (sou) have stood (hestēkasin) outside (exō) desiring (thelontes) to see (idein) you (se).”

Luke 8:21 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) [Jesus, v7:40, RE] having been caused to make [a] decision (apokritheis), he enunciated (eipen) to (pros) them (autous), “[A] mother (mētēr) of me (mou) and (kai) brothers (adelphoi) of me (mou) are (eisin) the ones (hoi) hearing (akouontes) and (kai) doing (poiountes) the (ton) Word (logon) of the (tou) God (theou)!”

Luke 8:22 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) it caused itself to come to pass (egeneto) in (en) one (mia) of the (tōn) days (hēmerōn), he (autos) embarked (enebē) into (eis) [a] ship (ploion), and (kai) the (hoi) disciples (mathētai) of him (autou) also (kai).

And (kai) he enunciated (eipen) to (pros) them (autous), “May we go through (dielthōmen) into (eis) the (to) other side (peran) of the (tēs) harbor (limnēs).”

And (kai) they were led up (anēchthēsan) [into the harbor, RE].

Luke 8:23 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) of them (autōn) sailing (pleontōn), he slept away (aphupnōsen).

And (kai) [a] whirlwind (lailaps) of wind (anemou) came down (katebē) into (eis) the (tēn) harbor (limnēn), and (kai) they were being filled together with (suneplērounto) [the harbor, RE], and (kai) they were being endangered (ekinduneuon).

Luke 8:24 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) they having come to (proselthontes) [to him, RE] they thoroughly awoke (diēgeiran) him (auton), saying (legontes), “Master (epistata), master (epistata), we cause ourselves to be lost (apollumetha)!"

But (de) the (ho) [Jesus, v7:40, RE] having been thoroughly awoken (diegertheis), he epitomized (epetimēsen) the (tō) wind (anemō), and (kai) the (tō) surge (kludōni) of the (tou) water (hudatos).

And (kai) they caused themselves to pause (epausanto), and (kai) it caused itself to become (egeneto) calm (galēnē).

Luke 8:25 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) he enunciated (eipen) to them (autois), “Where (pou) [is] the (hē) belief (pistis) of you (humōn)!?”

But (de) they having been made fearful (phobēthentes), they were amazed (ethaumasan), saying (legontes) to (pros) one another (allēlous), “So then (ara), who (tis) is (estin) this (houtos) [Jesus, 7:40, RE] that (hoti) he makes arrangements over (epitassei) the (tois) winds (anemois), and (kai) the (tō) water (hudati) also (kai), and (kai) they obey (hupakouousin) him (autō)!?”

Luke 8:26 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) they sailed down (katepleusan) into (eis) the (tēn) region (chōran) of the (tōn) Gerasenes (Gerasēnōn), which (hētis) [region, RE] is (estin) [on the, AE] opposite side (antipera) of the (tēs) Galilee (Galilaias).

Luke 8:27 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) he having gone out (exelthonti) upon (epi) the (tēn) land (gēn), [a] certain (tis) male (anēr) out (ek) of the (tēs) city (poleōs) met (hupēntēsen) him (autō), [[a] male, RE] holding (echōn) little demons (daimonia), and (kai) for [a] suitable (hikanō) time (chronō) he absolutely did not enrobe himself in (ouk enedusato) outer garments (himation), and (kai) he was absolutely not staying (ouk emenen) in (en) [a] house (oikia)!

BUT (all’), [he was staying, RE] among (en) the (tois) memorials (mnēmasin)!

Luke 8:28 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) he having seen (idōn) the (ton) Jesus (Iēsoun), he having cried up (anakraxas), he fell toward4363 (prosepesen) him (autō) and (kai) enunciated (eipen) [with, AE] [a] great (megalē) voice (phōnē), “What (ti), me (emoi) and (kai) you (soi), Jesus (Iēsou), Son (huie) of the (tou) God (theou), of the (tou) highest (hupsistou) [God, RE]!?

I cause myself to beg (deomai) of you (sou), do not torment (mē basanisēs) me (me)!”

Luke 8:29 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) he gave [an] instruction (parēngeilen) to the (tō) spirit (pneumatic), to the (tō) unclean (akathartō) [spirit, RE], to come out (exelthein) from (apo) the (tou) mortal (anthrōpou).

Because (gar) many (pollois) times (chronois) [the unclean spirit, RE] had snatched him together with (sunērpakei auton) [torment, v28, RE].

And (kai) he was being bound (edesmeueto) to chains (halusesin) and (kai) to shackles (pedais), being watchfully guarded (phulassomenos), and (kai) braking through (diarrēssōn) the (ta) bounds (desma) he was being driven (ēlauneto) under (hupo) [authority, AE] of the (tou) little demon (daimoniou) into (eis) the (tas) desolate places (erēmous).

Luke 8:30 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) inquired (epērōtēsen) of him (auton), “What (ti) is (estin) [a] name (onoma) for you (soi)?”

But (de) the (ho) [little demon, v29, RE] enunciated (eipen), “Legion (legiōn)”, because (hoti) many (polla) little demons (daimonia) entered in (eisēlthen) into (eis) him (auton).

Luke 8:31 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) they were accosting (parekaloun) him (auton), in order that (hina) he may not make [an] arrangement (mē epitaxē) for them (autois) to go away (apelthein) into (eis) the (tēn) abyss (abbsson).

Luke 8:32 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) there was being (ēn) there (ekei) [a] drove (agelē) of [a] suitable number (hikanōn) of young swine (choirōn), being herded (boskomenē) in (en) the (tō) mountain (orei).

And (kai) they accosted (parekalesan) him (auton), in order that (hina) he may turn over (epitrepsē) those (ekeinous) [young swine, RE] to them (autois), to enter in (eiselthein) into (eis) [them, RE].

And (kai) he turned [[the] young swine, RE] over (epetrepsen) to them (autois).

Luke 8:33 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ta) little demons (daimonia) having come out (exelthonta) from (apo) the (tou) mortal (anthrōpou), they entered in (eisēlthon) into (eis) the (tous) young swine (choirous).

And (kai) the (hē) drove (agelē) bolted (hōrmēsen) down (kata) the (tou) overhang (krēmnou) into (eis) the (tēn) harbor (limnēn), and (kai) it was choked (apepnigē).

Luke 8:34 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the ones (hoi) herding (boskontes) [the young swine, v33, RE] having seen (idontes) the thing (to) having come to pass (gegonos), they fled (ephugon).

And (kai) they reported (apēngeilan) [it, AE] into (eis) the (tēn) city (polin) and (kai) into (eis) the (tous) fields (agrous).

Luke 8:35 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) they went out (exēlthon) to see (idein) the thing (to) having come to pass (gegonos).

And (kai) they came (ēlthon) to (pros) the (ton) Jesus (Iēsoun), and (kai) they found (heuron) the (ton) mortal (anthrōpon) from (aph’) whom (hou) the (ta) little demons (daimonia) went out (exēlthen), he having been outer garmented (himatismenon) and (kai) causing himself to sit down (kathēmenon) alongside (para) of the (tou) feet (podas) of the (tou) Jesus (Iēsou).

And (kai) they were caused to be in fear (ephobēthēsan).

Luke 8:36 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the ones (hoi) [herding, v34, RE] reported (apēngeilan) to them (autois), having seen (idontes) how (pōs) the one (ho) having been demon-possessed (daimonistheis) was made whole (esōthē).

Luke 8:37 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) absolutely all (hapan) the (to) plethora (plēthos) of the (tēs) region around (perichōrou) the (tōn) Gerasenes (Gerasēōn) inquired (ērōtēsen) of him (auton) to go away (apelthein) from (ap’) them (autōn), because (hoti) they were being held together with (suneichonto) great (megalō) fear (phobō).

But (de) he having embarked (embas) into (eis) [a] ship (ploion), he returned (hupestrepsen).

Luke 8:38 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) male (anēr) from (aph’) whom (hou) the (ta) little demons (daimonia) had come out (exelēluthei), he was causing himself to beg (edeito) of him (autou) to be (einai) with (sun) him (autō).

But (de) he sent him away (apelusen auton), saying (legōn),

Luke 8:39 (LIT/UBS4) “Return (hupostrephe) into (eis) the (ton) house (oikon) of you (sou), and (kai) cause yourself to lead through (diēgou) as many things as (hosa) the (ho) God (theos) did (epoiēsen) for you (soi).”

And (kai) he went away (apēlthen) down through (kath’) the (tēn) whole (holēn) city (polin) preaching (kērussōn) as many things as (hosa) the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) did (epoiēsen) for him (autō).

Luke 8:40 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) in (en) the (tō) [time, AE] of the (ton) Jesus (Iēsoun) to return (hupostrephein), the (ho) crowd (ochlos) caused itself to receive (apedexato) him (auton), because (gar) they were all being (ēsan pantes) ones expecting (prosdokōntes) him (auton).

Luke 8:41 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) behold (idou), there came (ēlthen) [a] male (anēr) to whom (hō) [was] [a] name (onoma) Jairus (Iairos)!

And (kai) this (houtos) [Jairus, RE] <was being> [a] chief one758 (archōn) under control (hupērchen) of the (tēs) synagogue (sunagōgēs)

And (kai) he having fallen4098 (pēson) alongside (para) the (tous) feet (podas) of the (tou) Jesus (Iēsou), he was accosting (parekalei) him (auton) to enter in (eiselthein) into (eis) the (ton) house (oikon) of him (autou);

Luke 8:42 (LIT/UBS4) because (hoti) to him (autō) there was being (ēn) [the] only genus3439 (monogenēs), [a] daughter (thugatēr), as (hōs) of twelve (dōdeka) years (etōn), and (kai) she (autē) was dying away (apethnēsken).

But (de) in (en) the (tō) [attempt, AE] of him (auton) to get underway (hupagein), the (hoi) crowds (ochloi) were together choking him in (sunepnigon auton).

Luke 8:43 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) [a] female (gunē) being (ousa) in (en) [a] flow (rhusei) of blood (haimatos) from (apo) [the age, AE] of twelve (dōdeka) years (etōn), one who (hētis), healers (iatrois) having consumed up toward (prosanalōsasa)  the (ton) whole (holon) living (bion) [of her, AE], was absolutely not strong enough (ouk ischusen) to be given therapy (therapeuthēnai) from (ap’) absolutely not one (oudenos) [healer, RE]!

Luke 8:44 (LIT/UBS4) She having come to (proselthousa) [the Jesus, v41, RE] from behind (opisthen), she caused herself to take hold (hēpsato) of the (tou) hem (kraspedou) of the (tou) outer garment (himatiou of him (autou).

And (kai) the (hē) flow (rhusis) of the (tou) blood (haimatos) of her (autēs) particularly (parachrēma) stood still (estē)!

Luke 8:45 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) enunciated (eipen), “Who (tis) [is] the one (ho) having caused himself to take hold (hapsamenos) of me (mou)?”

But (de) everyone (pantōn) being caused to deny (arnoumenōn) [it, AE], the (ho) Peter (Petros) and (kai) the ones (hoi) together with (sun) him (autō) enunciated (eipen), “Master (epistata), the (hoi) crowds (ochloi) hold together with (sunechousin) you (se), and (kai) they crowd [you, RE] off (apothlibousin)!”

Luke 8:46 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) enunciated (eipen), “Someone (tis) caused himself to take hold (hēpsato) of me (mou), because (gar) I (egō) knew (egnōn) of [an] inherently powered work (dunamin) having gone out (exelēluthuian) from (ap’) me (emou).”

Luke 8:47 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (hē) female (gunē) having seen (idousa) that (hoti) she absolutely did not escape notice (ouk elathen), she came (ēlthen) trembling (tremousa).

And (kai) she having fallen toward4363 (prospesousa) him (autō), she reported (apēngeilen) in sight (enōpion) of all (pantos) of the (tou) people (laou) through (di’) what (hēn) cause (aitian) she caused herself to take hold (hēpsato) of him (autou), and (kai) particularly (parachrēma) how (hōs) she was healed (iathē).

Luke 8:48 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) [Jesus, v46, RE] enunciated (eipen) to (pros) her (autē), “Daughter (thugatēr), the (hē) belief (pistis) of you (sou) has made you whole (sesōken se)!

Cause yourself to go (poreuou) in (eis) peace (eirēnēn).”

Luke 8:49 (LIT/UBS4) Of him (autou) yet (eti) speaking (lalountos), someone (tis) is caused to come (erchetai) along (para) [from, AE] the (tou) chief one of the synagogue (archisunagōgou), saying (legōn) that (hoti), “The (hē) daughter (thugatēr) has died (tethnēken).

[Make, AE] the (ton) teacher (didaskalon) no longer yet (mēketi) grim (skulle).”
