JOHN
Chapter 5
Update: 2024.02.29
John 5:1 (LIT/UBS4) With (meta) [the passing, AE] of these things (tauta) there was being (ēn) [a] feast (heortē) of the (tōn) Judeans (Ioudaiōn).
And (kai) Jesus (Iēsous) walked up (anebē) into (eis) Jerusalem (Hierosoluma).
John 5:2 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) there is (estin) in (en) the (tois) Jerusalem (Hierosolumois) over (epi) the (tē) sheep (probatikē) [pool, AE] [a] swimming place (kolumbēthra), the one (hē) being spoken (epilegomenē) Hebraïstically (Hebraïsti) ‘Bethzatha’ (Bēthzatha), having (echousa) five (pente) porches (stoas).
John 5:3-4 (LIT/UBS4) Among (en) these ones (tautais) causing themselves to lie down (katekeito) [there was, AE] [a] plethora (plēthos) of the ones (tōn) being disabled (asthenountōn), blind ones (tuphlōn), lame ones (chōlōn), withered ones (xērōn).
John 5:5 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) there was being (ēn) [a] certain (tis) mortal (anthrōpos) there (ekei), he holding (echōn) in (en) the (tē) disability (astheneia) of him (autou) thirty (triakonta) and (kai) eight (oktō) years (etē).
John 5:6 (LIT/UBS4) The (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) seeing (idōn) this one (touton) being caused to lie down (katakeimenon), and (kai) having known (gnous) that (hoti) he has (echei) [been lying, v3-4, RE] much (polun) time (chronon) already (ēdē), he says (legei) to him (autō), “Do you desire (theleis) to cause yourself to become (genesthai) healthy (hugiēs)?”
John 5:7 (LIT/UBS4) The one (ho) being [a] disabled one (asthenōn) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē) for him (autō), “Lord (kurie), I absolutely do not have (ouk echō) [a] mortal (anthrōpon), in order that (hina) when perhaps (hotan) the (to) water (hudōr) may be troubled (tarachthē) he may throw (balē) me (me) into (eis) the (tēn) swimming place (kolumbēthran)!
But (de) in (en) [the time, AE] which (hō) I (egō) cause myself to come (erchomai) another (allos) steps down (katabainei) before (pro) me (emou).”
John 5:8 (LIT/UBS4) The (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) says (legei) to him (autō), “Be awake (egeire)!
Lift (aron) the (ton) mattress (krabatton) of you (sou) and (kai) walk around (peripatei)!”
John 5:9 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) straightaway (eutheōs) he caused himself to become (egeneto) healthy (hugiēs).
And (kai) the (ho) mortal (anthrōpos) lifted (ēren) the (ton) mattress (krabatton) of him (autou), and (kai) he was walking around (periepatei).
And (kai) it was being (ēn) [a] sabbath day (sabbaton) in (en) the (tē) day (hēmera) of that (ekeinē).
John 5:10 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (hoi) Judeans (Ioudaioi) were saying (elegon) to the one (tō) having been given therapy (tetherapeumenō), “It is (estin) [a] sabbath day (sabbaton), and (kai) is it absolutely not being outside1832 (ouk exestin) [of the law, AE] for you (soi) to lift (arai) the (ton) mattress (krabatton) of you (sou)!?”
John 5:11 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the one (ho) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē) for them (autois), “The one (ho) having made (poiēsas) me (me) healthy (hugiē), that one (ekeinos) enunciated (eipen) to me (moi), ‘Lift (aron) the (ton) mattress (krabatton) of you (sou) and (kai) walk around (peripatei).’”
John 5:12 (LIT/UBS4) They inquired (ērōtēsan) of him (auton), “Who (tis) is (estin) the (ho) mortal (anthrōpos), the one (ho) having enunciated (eipōn) to you (soi), ‘Lift (aron) and (kai) walk around (peripatei)?’”
John 5:13 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the one (ho) having been healed (iatheis) had absolutely not seen (ouk ēdei) who (tis) it is (estin), because (gar) the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) slipped out (exeneusen) out (ex) of [a] crowd (ochlou) being (ontos) in (en) the (tō) place (topō)!
John 5:14 (LIT/UBS4) With (meta) [the passing, AE] of these things (tauta) the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) finds (heuriskei) him (auton) in (en) the (tō) sacred place (hierō).
And (kai) he enunciated (eipen) to him (autō), “See (ide), you have become (gegonas) healthy (hugiēs)!
No longer yet (mēketi) sin (hamartane), in order that (hina) something (ti) worse (cheiron) may not cause itself to come to pass (mē genētai) to you (soi).”
John 5:15 (LIT/UBS4) The (ho) mortal (anthrōpos) went away (apēlthen), and (kai) he reported up (anēngeilen) to the (tois) Judeans (Ioudaiois) that (hoti) Jesus (Iēsous) is (estin) the (ho) [mortal, RE] having made (poiēsas) him (auton) healthy (hugiē).
John 5:16 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) through (dia) [the sake, AE] of this (touto) the (hoi) Judeans (Ioudaioi) were pursuing (ediōkon) the (ton) Jesus (Iēsoun), because (hoti) he was doing (epoiei) these things (tauta) in (en) [a] sabbath day (sabbatō).
John 5:17 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) caused himself to make [a] decision (apekrinato) for them (autois), “The (ho) Father (patēr) of me (mou) causes himself to work (ergazetai) until (heōs) at this time (arti);
[therefore, AE] I also (kagō) cause myself to work (ergazomai) [until at this time, RE]!”
John 5:18 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), through (dia) [the sake, AE] of this (touto) the (hoi) Judeans (Ioudaioi) were searching (ezētoun) more (mallon) to kill (apokteinai) him (auton), because (hoti) absolutely not (ou) only (monon) was he letting loose (eluen) the (to) sabbath day (sabbaton), BUT (alla), he was saying (elegen) also (kai) his own (idion) Father (patera) [to be] the (ton) God (theon), making (poiōn) himself (heauton) equal (ison) to the (tō) God (theō)!
(Jesus Christ always stated that the Father, his Father, is the God. Jesus Christ never stated that he himself is the Father or the God. See John 5:18, 6:27, 45-46, 8:41-42, 10:36, 13:3, 20:17; The apostles always wrote that Jesus' heavenly Father was the God, and that Jesus Christ was his firstborn son whom he sent into the cosmos, describing God the Father and his firstborn son as two separate and distinct beings, describing the son being subordinate to the Father.)
John 5:19 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) caused himself to make [a] decision (apekrinato), and (kai) he was saying (elegen) to them (autois), “Truly (amēn), truly (amēn) I say (legō) to you (humin), the (ho) son (huios) <can> absolutely not inherently power himself (ou dunatai) to do (poiein) absolutely not one (ouden) [work, v17, RE] from (aph’) of himself (heautou), if perhaps (ean) he may not look at (mē blepē) what (ti) the (ton) Father (patera) is doing (poiounta)!
Because (gar) perhaps (an) which things (ha) that (ekeinos) [Father, RE] may do (poiē), likewise (homoiōs), these things (tauta) the (ho) son (huios) also (kai) does (poiei)!
John 5:20 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) the (ho) Father (patēr) loves (philei) the (ton) son (huion), and (kai) he thoroughly shows (deiknusin) to him (autō) all (panta) [works, RE] which (ta) he (autos) does (poiei).
And (kai) greater (meizona) works (erga) than these (toutōn) he thoroughly shows (deixei) to him (autō), in order that (hina) you (humeis) may be amazed (thaumazēte).
(For all those who have received a new birth above in God’s promised gift of his paternal holy Spirit (Lev. 26:11-12; John 3:3-8; Acts 1:4; 2 Cor. 6:16-18; *1 Pet. 1:23), and for those paternal sons being taught by God (YHWH) himself, see Isa. 54:13; Jer. 31:31-34; Luke 12:12; John 5:19-20, 6:45, 14:26, 15:26, 16:13-14; 1 Cor. 1:4-8, 2:10, 12:8; 2 Cor. 5:19; Gal. 1:12; Eph. 4:20-21; 1 Thes. 4:9; 2 Tim. 2:7; Heb. 8:8-12, 10:16-17; James 1:5-6; 1 John 2:27, 5:20)
(For God making Jesus Christ his domicile, and he subsequently working IN and THROUGH Jesus Christ as his mortal agent in this cosmos, see *Mat. 9:8; Mark 6:5; Luke 5:17, 7:16; John 3:2, 5:19-20, 8:16, *29, 9:33, *10:38, *14:10-11, *16-20, 28, 16:32b; *Acts 2:22, 10:38; *2 Cor. 5:18-19; Eph. 3:16-19, 4:6; *Col. 1:19-20, 2:9; 1 John 5:20)
John 5:21 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) as (hōsper) the (ho) Father (patēr) awakens (egeirei) the (tous) dead ones (nekrous) and (kai) makes alive (zōopoiei) [them, AE], thusly (houtōs) the (ho) son (huios) also (kai) makes alive (zōopoiei) ones whom (hous) he desires (thelei).
John 5:22 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) the (ho) Father (patēr) but absolutely not (oude) judges (krinei) absolutely not one (oudena)!
BUT (alla), all (pasan) of the (tēn) judgment (krisin) has been given (dedōken) to the (tō) son (huiō);
John 5:23 (LIT/UBS4) in order that (hina) all (pantes) may honor (timōsi) the (ton) son (huion), down according to as (kathōs) [all, RE] honor (timōsi) the (ton) Father (patera)!
The one (ho) not (mē) honoring (timōn) the (ton) son (huion) absolutely does not (ou) honor (tima) the (ton) Father (patera), the one (ho) having sent (pempsanta) him (auton)!
John 5:24 (LIT/UBS4) Truly (amēn), truly (amēn) I say (legō) to you (humin), that (hoti) the one (ho) hearing (akouōn) the (ton) Word (logon) of me (mou), and (kai) believing (pisteuōn) the one (tō) having sent (pempsanti) me (me), he holds (echei) ageless (aiōnion) life (zōēn);
and (kai) he absolutely does not cause himself to come (ouk erchetai) into (eis) judgment (krisin)!
BUT (alla), he has moved (metabebēken) out (ek) of the (tou) death (thanatou) into (eis) the (tēn) life (zōēn)!
John 5:25 (LIT/UBS4) Truly (amēn), truly (amēn) I say (legō) to you (humin) that (hoti), [an] hour (hōra) causes itself to come (erchetai), and (kai) is (estin) now (nun), when (hote) the (hoi) dead ones (nekroi) shall hear (akousousin) the (tēs) voice (phōnēs) of the (tou) Son (huiou) of the (tou) God (theou)!
And (kai) the ones (hoi) having heard (akousantes) shall live (zēsousin).
John 5:26 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar), so be it as (hōsper) the (ho) Father (patēr) holds (echei) life (zōēn) in (en) himself (heautō), thusly (houtōs) to the (tō) son (huiō) also (kai) he gave (edōken) life (zōēn) to hold (echein) in (en) to himself (heautō).
John 5:27 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) he gave (edōken) authority (exousian) to him (autō) to make (poiein) judgment (krisin), because (hoti) he is (estin) [the] Son (huios) of [the] Mortal (anthrōpou).
John 5:28 (LIT/UBS4) Do not be amazed (mē thaumazete) at this (tauto), because (hoti) [an] hour (hōra) causes itself to come (erchetai) in (en) which (hē) all (pantes) the ones (hoi) in (en) the (toi) memorials (mnēmeiois) shall hear (akousousin) the (tēs) voice (phōnēs) of him (autou),
John 5:29 (LIT/UBS4) and (kai) they shall cause themselves to go out (ekporeusontai).
The ones (hoi) having done (poiēsantes) the (ta) good (agatha) [works, v20, RE] [shall go out, RE] into (eis) [a] standing up (anastasin) of life (zōēs).
But (de) the ones (hoi) having habitually practiced (praxantes) the (ta) worthless (phaula) [works, v20, RE] [shall go out, RE] into (eis) [a] standing up (anastasin) of judgment (kriseōs).
(For Jesus Christ desiring not to do his own will,
but the will of his heavenly Father, see Mat. 26:42; Luke 22:42; John 4:34,
5:30, 6:38.)
John 5:30 (LIT/UBS4) I (egō) can absolutely not inherently power myself (ou dunamai) to do (poiein) absolutely not one (ouden) [good work, v29, RE] from (ap’) of myself (emautou)!
Down according to as (kathōs) I hear (akouō), I judge (krinō).
And (kai) the (hē) judgment (krisis), the (hē) [judgment, RE] of me (emē), is (estin) [a] righteous (dikaia) [judgment, RE];
because (hoti) I absolutely do not search (ou zētō) for the (to) desire (thelēma), the (to) [desire, RE] of me (emon), BUT (alla), for the (to) desire (thelēma) of the one (tou) having sent (pempsantos) me (me)!
John 5:31 (LIT/UBS4) If perhaps (ean) I (egō) may witness (marturō) about (peri) myself (emautou), the (hē) witness (marturia) of me (mou) is (estin) absolutely not (ouk) true (alēthēs)!
John 5:32 (LIT/UBS4) Another one (allos) is (estin) the one (ho) witnessing (marturōn) about (peri) me (emou).
And (kai) I have seen (oida) that (hoti) the (hē) witness (marturia) of which (hēn) [another one, RE] witnesses (marturei) about (peri) me (emou), is (estin) true (alēthēs).
John 5:33 (LIT/UBS4) You (humeis) have sent (apestalkate) to (pros) John (Iōannēn), and (kai) truly he has witnessed (memarturēken) to the (tē) Truth (alētheia).
John 5:34 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) I (egō) absolutely do not receive (ou lambanō) the (tēn) witness (marturian) alongside (para) of [a] mortal (anthrōpou).
BUT (alla), I say (legō) these things (tauta) in order that (hina) you (humeis) may be made whole (sōthēte)!
John 5:35 (LIT/UBS4) That one (ekeinos) was being (ēn) the (ho) lamp (luchnos), the (ho) burning one (kaiomenos), and (kai) [the] shining one (phainōn).
But (de) you (humeis) desired (ēthelēsate) to be caused to jump for joy (agalliathēnai) toward (pros) [an] hour (hōran) in (en) the (tō) light (phōti) of him (autou).
John 5:36 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) I (egō) hold (echō) the (tēn) greater (meizō) witness (marturian) [than the witness, AE] of the (tou) John (Iōannou).
Because (gar) the (ta) works (erga) which (ha) the (ho) Father (patēr) has given (dedōken) to me (moi) in order that (hina) I may make them complete (teleiōsō auta), the (ta) works (erga) which (ha) I do (poiō) witness (marturei) about (peri) me (emou), that (hoti) the (ho) Father (patēr) has sent (apestalken) me (me).
John 5:37 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) the (ho) Father (patēr) having sent (pempsas) me (me), that one (ekeinos) truly has witnessed (memarturēken) about (peri) me (emou)!
And you have absolutely not heard (oute akēkoate), ever at any time (pōpote), [a] voice (phōnēn) of him (autou)!
And you have absolutely not gazed at (oute heōrakate) [a] sight (eidos) of him (autou)!
(For
who has gazed at, and who has not gazed at,
the God the Father, see
John 1:18, 5:37, 6:46, 14:7-11, 15:23-25, 20:28-29; 1 John 1:3, 4:20-21;
3 John 1:11)
John 5:38 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) you absolutely do not hold (ouk echete) the (ton) Word (logon) of him (autou) staying (menonta) in (en) you (humin);
because (hoti) that one (ekeinos) whom (hon) he sent (apesteilen), this one (toutō), you (humeis) absolutely do not believe (ou pisteuete)!
John 5:39 (LIT/UBS4) You search (eraunate) the (tas) writings (graphas) because (hoti) in (en) them (autais) you (humeis) conclude (dokeite) to hold (echein) ageless (aiōnion) life (zōēn).
And (kai) those (ekeinai) are (eisin) the (hai) [writings, RE] witnessing (marturousai) about (peri) me (emou)!
John 5:40 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) you absolutely do not desire (ou thelete) to come (elthein) to (pros) me (me), in order that (hina) you may hold (echēte) life (zōēn)!?
John 5:41 (LIT/UBS4) I absolutely do not receive (ou lambanō) glory (doxan) alongside (para) of mortals (anthrōpōn)!
John 5:42 (LIT/UBS4) BUT (alla), I have known (egnōka) you (humas), that (hoti) you absolutely do not hold (ouk echete) the (tēn) love (agapēn) of the (tou) God (theou) in (en) yourselves (heautois)!
John 5:43 (LIT/UBS4) I (egō) have come (elēlutha) in (en) the (tō) name (onomati) of the (tou) Father (patros) of me (mou), and (kai) you absolutely do not receive (ou lambanete) me (me)!
If perhaps (ean) another (allos) may come (elthē) in (en) the (tō) name (onomati), the one (tō) [being] his own (idiō), that one (ekeinon) you shall cause yourselves to receive (lēmpsesthe)!
(For what is the scriptural definition of the meaning of, “being baptized in the name of…”, compare Mat. 28:19; John 5:37-43, 10:25, 13:6-15; Acts 4:7, 9:17-18, 19:5, 22:16; Rom. 1:1-6; Eph. 5:26; Titus 3:5; Rev. 1:5)
John 5:44 (LIT/UBS4) How (pōs) <can> you (humeis) inherently power yourselves (dunasthe) to believe (pisteusai), receiving (lambanontes) glory (doxan) alongside3844 (para) of one another (allēlōn), and (kai) you absolutely do not search (ou zēteite) for the (tēn) glory (doxan), the (tēn) [glory, RE] alongside3844, 3936 (para) of the (tou) only (monou) God (theou)!?
(For a believer's responsibility to stand himself alongside of the Father through doing good works, in order to receive anything from him, see Mat. 6:1-4, 18:19, 19:26, 21:42; Mark 10:27, 12:11; Luke 1:30, 37; John 5:44, 6:45-46, 8:38-42, 9:16, 33, 17:5-8; Rom. 2:11-13, 6:13, 12:1; 1 Cor. 7:24, 8:8a; 2 Cor. 9:8; Gal. 3:11; Eph. 6:8; 1 Tim. 2:10; 2 Tim. 3:17; Tit. 2:14, 3:8,14; Heb. 10:24; James 1:5-7, 27; 1 Pet. 2:20-21; 2 Pet. 3:8; 2 John 1:3; Rev. 2:28)
John 5:45 (LIT/UBS4) Do not conclude (mē dokeite) that (hoti) I (egō) shall publicly accuse (katēgorēsō) you (humōn) to (pros) the (ton) Father (patera).
There is (estin) the (ho) Moses (Mōusēs) publicly accusing (katēgorōn) you (humōn), in (en) whom (hon) you (humeis) have hoped (ēlpikate)!
John 5:46 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) if (ei) you were believing (episteuete) Moses (Mōusei) perhaps (an) you were believing (episteuete) me (emoi), because (gar) that one (ekeinos) wrote (egrapsen) of me (emou)!
John 5:47 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) if (ei) you absolutely do not believe (ou pisteuete) the (tois) writings (grammasin) of that one (ekeinou), how (pōs) shall you believe (pisteusete) the (tois) statements (rhēmasin) [being] mine (emois)!
