Chapter 10

Update:  2024.11.01

Heb. 10:1 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) the (ho) law (nomos), it holding (echōn) [a] shadow (skian) of the (tōn) good things (agathōn) being about (mellontōn) [to be],

(she (autēn) absolutely not (ouk) [being] the (tēn) icon (eikona) of the (tōn) practical issues (pragmatōn) - down (kat’) each year (eniauton) the (tais) same (autais) continual (diēnekes) sacrifices (thusiais) which (has) they bring (prospherousin) into (eis) the (to) [holy places, v9:25, RE]),

[the law, RE] could absolutely not at any time inherently power itself (oudepote dunatai) to make complete (teleiōsai) the (tous) [mortals, v9:27, RE] causing themselves to come to (proserchomenous) [the God, v9:24, RE]!

(For Jesus Christ being the icon of the sacrificial issues, he being the final sacrifice, and the new and final high sacrificial priest of Israel, see Rom. 8:29; 2 Cor. 4:4; Col. 1:15.)

(For two practical issues which the Mosaic law couldn't accomplish for the children of Israel, see Heb. 6:18-20.)

(Under the old covenant of the Mosaic Law God’s gift of his paternal holy Spirit couldn’t be given to those who believe upon Jesus name, because Jesus Christ hadn’t come yet, and hadn’t shed his blood yet, and hadn’t died yet, to bring in a new covenant (Heb. 7:21-22); under which covenant it is now possible for anyone to obtain eternal life. The best the old covenant could do was providing temporary pardon for sin, month by month and year by year.  But it never gave anyone the ability to become free from the worry about sin, the worry about sin always being in our conscience, from which worry Christ Jesus has made us free (John 8:31-36).  The new covenant proves that what God promised to Israel through many of his prophets about a coming new covenant, was true.  And secondly, through our reception of God’s gift of holy Spirit we have tangible proof, and thereby hope, for the return of Christ Jesus with our share of his inheritance, which includes our eternal life.)

 Heb. 10:2 (LIT/UBS4) Otherwise (epei), perhaps (an) would they absolutely not have caused themselves to pause (ouk epausanto) [the sacrifices, v1, RE] being brought to (prospheromenai) [the holy places, v9:25, RE], through (dia) the (to) [sake, AE] of but not one (mēdemian) of the (tous) [mortals, v9:27, RE] serving (latreuontas) to yet hold (echein eti) [a] conscience (suneidēsin) of sins (hamartiōn), once (hapax) having been cleansed (kekatharismenous)!?

Heb. 10:3 (LIT/UBS4) BUT (all’), in (en) them (autais), [the sacrifices, v1, RE], [there, AE] [is] [a] remembrance (anamnēsis) of sins (hamartiōn) down through (kat’) each year (eniauton).

Heb. 10:4 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) blood (haima) of bulls (taurōn) and (kai) of he-goats (tragōn) [is] inherently unpowered (adunaton) to seize away (aphairein) sins (hamartias).

Heb. 10:5 (LIT/UBS4) Through this (dio) [blood, v4, RE] [being] inherently unpowered, v4, RE], causing himself to enter in (eiserchomenos) into (eis) the (ton) cosmos (kosmon), he says (legei), “A sacrifice (thusian) and (kai) [a] presentation (prosphoran) you absolutely did not desire (ouk ēthelēsas)!

But (de) you have caused yourself to make fit (katērtisō) for me (moi) [a] body (sōma).

Heb. 10:6 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) whole burnt offerings (holokautōmata) about (peri) sin (hamartias), you absolutely did not well-approve (ouk eudokēsas)!

Heb. 10:7 (LIT/UBS4) Then (tote) I enunciated (eipon), 'Behold (idou), I arrive (hēkō)

In (en) [a] heading (kephalidi) of [a] little scroll (bibliou) it has been written (gegraptai) about (peri) me (emou), of the (tou) [desire of me, vPsa. 40:6-8] to do (poiēsai) the (to) desire (thelēma) of you (sou), the (ho) God (theos)!'”

(See Psalm 40:6-8)

Heb. 10:8 (LIT/UBS4) saying (legōn) above (anōteron), that (hoti), “Sacrifices (thusias), and (kai) presentations (prosphoras), and (kai) whole burnt offerings (holokautōmata), and (kai) [offerings, RE] about (peri) sin (hamartias), you absolutely did not desire (ouk ēthelēsas)!

But you absolutely did not well-approve (oude eudokēsas) [of sacrifices, RE] which (haitines) are brought to (prospherontai) [you, AE] down on account (kata) of law (nomon)!”

Heb. 10:9 (LIT/UBS4) Behold (idou), then (tote) he has stated (eirēken), “I arrive (hēkō) [on account, AE] of the (tou) [desire of me, vPsa. 40:6-8], to do (poiēsai) the (to) desire (thelēma) of you (sou)!”

He annihilates (anairei) the (to) first (prōton) [law, v8, RE], in order that (hina) he may stand (stēsē) the (to) second (deuteron) [law, v8, RE];

(See Rom. 3:27; Heb 11:1)

Heb. 10:10 (LIT/UBS4) in (en) whose (hō) desire (thelēmati) we are (esmen), we having been made holy (hēgiasmenoi) through (dia) the (tēs) presentation (prosphoras) once upon [a] time (ephapax) of the (tou) body (sōmatos) of Jesus (Iēsous) Christ (Christou)!

Heb. 10:11 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) truly (men), every (pas) sacrificial priest (hiereus) has stood (hestēken) down through (kath’) [every, v7:27, 9:6, RE] day (hēmeran) giving liturgical service (leitourgōn);

and (kai) the (tas) same (autas) [sacrificial priest, RE] many times (pollakis) bringing to (prospherōn) [the first tent, v9:6, RE] sacrifices (thusias), [sacrifices, RE] which (haitines) can absolutely not at any time (oudepote) inherently power themselves (dunantai) to take away sins all around (perielein hamartias)!

Heb. 10:12 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) this (houtos) [sacrificial priest, v11, RE] having brought to (prosenenkas) [the heavenly holy places, v9:24, RE] one (mian) sacrifice (thusian) over (huper) [the sake, AE] of sins (hamartiōn), into (eis) the (to) continual (diēnekes) [taking away of sins all around, v11, RE], he sat down (ekathisen) in (en) right (dexia) of the (tou) God (theou).

Heb. 10:13 (LIT/UBS4) Of the (to) remainder (loipon) [of Jesus Christ's liturgical service, v8:6, 9:21, 10:11, RE], he is causing himself to receive (ekdechomenos) [the ones causing themselves to come toward the God, v1, RE], until (heōs) the (hoi) hateful (echthroi) [mortals, v9:27, RE] of him (autou) may have been placed (tethōsin) [as, RE] [a] footstool under (hupopodion) the (tōn) feet (podōn) of him (autou)!

 (For Christ Jesus' footstool, see Psalm 110:1; Mat. 22:44; Mark 12:36; Luke 20:43; Acts 2:35; *Rom. 16:20; 1 Cor. 15:25-28; Eph. 1:22; Heb. 1:13, 2:8, 10:13)

 Heb. 10:14 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) one (mia) presentation (prosphora) has been made complete (teteleiōken), into (eis) the (to) continual (diēnekes) [taking away of sins all around, v11, RE] of the ones (tous) being made holy (hagiazomenous)

(See John 20:17)

Heb. 10:15 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (to) Spirit (pneuma) also (kai), the (to) holy one (hagion), witnesses (marturei) to us (hēmin), because (gar) with (meta) the (to) [coming to pass of the Spirit, vJer. 31:31] to have stated (eirēkenai):

Heb. 10:16 (LIT/UBS4) “This (hautē) [is] the (hē) covenant (diathēkē) which (hēn) I shall cause myself to put through (diathēsomai) to (pros) them (autous) with (meta) [the passing, vJer. 31:31] of the (tas) days (hēmeras) of those things (ekeinas)”, says (legei) [the] Lord (kurios, YHWH), “I am giving (didous) [the] laws (nomous) of me (mou) upon (epi) [the] hearts (kardias) of them (autōn);

and (kai) upon (epi) the (tēn) thought (dianoian) of them (autōn) I shall inscribe (epigrapsō) them (autous).

Heb. 10:17 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) of the (tōn) sins (hamartiōn) of them (autōn), and (kai) of the (tōn) lawlessness (anomiōn) of them (autōn), no (mē), I shall absolutely not be reminded (ou mnēsthēsomai) any longer (eti)!”

(For the God's prophecy of his coming new covenant, see Jer. 31:31-34; 2 Cor. 3:2-3; Heb. 8:8-12, 10:16-17)

(For all those who have received a new birth above in God’s promised gift of his paternal holy Spirit (Lev. 26:11-12; John 3:3-8; Acts 1:4; 2 Cor. 6:16-18; *1 Pet. 1:23), and for those paternal sons being taught by God (YHWH) himself, see Isa. 54:13; Jer. 31:31-34; Luke 12:12; John 5:19-20, 6:45, 14:26, 15:26, 16:13-14; 1 Cor. 1:4-8, 2:10, 12:8; 2 Cor. 5:19; Gal. 1:12; Eph. 4:20-21; 1 Thes. 4:9; 2 Tim. 2:7; Heb. 8:8-12, 10:16-17; James 1:5-6; 1 John 2:27, 5:20)

Heb. 10:18 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) where (hopou) [there, AE] [is] [a] letting go (aphesis) of these (toutōn) [sins, v17, RE] [there, AE] [is] absolutely no longer yet (ouketi) [a] presentation (prosphora) about (peri) sin (hamartias)!

Heb. 10:19 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), brothers (adelphoi), we having (echontes) boldness (parrēsian) [to go, AE] into (eis) the (tēn) entrance (eisodon) of the (tōn) [heavenly, v9:24, RE] holy places (hagiōn) in (en) the (tō) blood (haimati) of Jesus (Iēsou),

Heb. 10:20 (LIT/UBS4) which (hēn) way (hodon) he renewed (enekainisen) for us (hēmin), [a] lately slaughtered (prosphaton) and (kai) living (zōsan) [way, RE] through (dia) the (tou) curtain (katapetasmatos), that (tout’) is (estin), the (tēs) flesh (sarkos) of him (autou),

(See John 10:1-9, 14:6, 6:44; Mat. 7:13; Mark 7:14; Luke 13:24)

Heb. 10:21 (LIT/UBS4) and (kai) [we having, v19, RE] [a] great (megan) sacrificial priest (hierea) over (epi) the (ton) house (oikon) of the (tou) God (theou),

(For what is God’s prophesied true “tent”, his new holy place under his new covenant, the prophesied promise of the Father to place himself into believers to live in them as his new permanent domicile, a true “tent” not built with mortal’s hands but with his own hand, see Ex. 15:17; 2 Sam. 7:5-16; Isa. 8:14; Ezek. 11:16; Joel 2:28-29; Amos 9:11-12; Mat. 3:11, 16:18, 26:61, 27:39-40; Mark 14:58, 15:29; Luke 3:21-22, 24:49; *John 2:19-22, 3:1-, 4:20-24, 7:37-39, 14:2, *23; Acts 1:4-5, 2:16-18, 33, 38-39, *7:44-50, *15:16-18, *17:24, *20:28; *Rom. 8:9-11, 12:4-5; 1 Cor. *3:16-17, *6:19-20, 10:16-17, 12:12-28; *2 Cor. 5:1, *6:16-18; Gal. 3:14, 22; Eph. 1:13-14, 22-23, *2:17-22, 3:6, 4:11-16, 5:30-32; Col. 1:18-27, 2:6-10, 3:15; *1 Thes. 5:9-11; *1 Tim. 3:15; *2 Tim. 1:14; Heb. *3:4-6, 8:2, *9:11-15, *24, 10:21, 36; 1 Pet. 2:4-5; 1 John 4:12-16; Rev. 3:12, 7:15, 11:19, *13:6, *21:3, 22)

Heb. 10:22 (LIT/UBS4) may we cause ourselves to come to (proserchōmetha) [the God, v21, RE] with (meta) [a] true (alēthinēs) heart (kardias), in (en) [a] full lading (plērophoria) of belief (pisteōs);

the (tas) hearts (kardias) [of us, AE] having been sprinkled (rherantismenoi) from (apo) [a] conscience (suneidēseōs) of evil (ponēras), and (kai) we having bathed (lelousmenoi) the (to) body (sōma) [in, AE] cleansed (katharō) water (hudati)!

Heb. 10:23 (LIT/UBS4) May we hold down (katechōmen) the (tēn) confession (homologian) of the (tēs) hope (elpidos), unwavering (aklinē);

because (gar) [the (ho) [God, v21, RE] [is] a] believable one (pistos), he having caused himself to promise (epangeilamenos) [a letting go of these, v18, [sins and lawlessness, v17, RE], RE]!

Heb. 10:24 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) may we entirely perceive (katanoōmen) one another (allēlous) into (eis) [a] honing (paroxusmon) of love (agapēs), and (kai) of beautiful (kalōn) works (ergōn).

(For a believer's responsibility to stand himself alongside of the Father through doing good works, in order to receive anything from him, see Mat. 6:1-4, 18:19, 19:26, 21:42; Mark 10:27, 12:11; Luke 1:30, 37; John 5:44, 6:45-46, 8:38-42, 9:16, 33, 17:5-8; Rom. 2:11-13, 6:13, 12:1; 1 Cor. 7:24, 8:8a; 2 Cor. 9:8; Gal. 3:11; Eph. 6:8; 1 Tim. 2:10; 2 Tim. 3:17; Tit. 2:14, 3:8,14; Heb. 10:24; James 1:5-7, 27; 1 Pet. 2:20-21; 2 Pet. 3:8; 2 John 1:3; Rev. 2:28)

Heb. 10:25 (LIT/UBS4) We are ones not leaving (mē enkataleipontes) the (tēn) gathering together (episunagōgēn) of ourselves (heautōn), down according to as (kathōs) [is] [a] custom (ethos) for some (tisin).

BUT (alla), we are ones accosting (parakalountes) [ourselves, RE], and (kai) so much (tosoutō) more (mallon) for as much as (hosō) you see (blepete) the (tēn) day (hēmeran) coming near1448 (engizousan)!

Heb. 10:26 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar), of us (hēmōn) willingly (hekousiōs) sinning (hamartanontōn), with (meta) the (to) [letting go of these, v18, [sins and lawlessness, v17, RE], RE] to receive (labein) the (tēn) experiential knowledge (epignōsin) of the (tēs) Truth (alētheias), there remains (apoleipetai) absolutely no longer yet (ouketi) [a] sacrifice (thusia) [for us, RE] about (peri) sins (hamartiōn)!

Heb. 10:27 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) [there remains, v26, RE] [a] certain (tis) fearful (phobera) expectation (ekdochē) of judgment (kriseōs), and (kai) of fire (puros), [a] zeal (zelōs) to eat (esthiein) the ones (tous) being about (mellontos) [to be] under controversy (hupenantious).

Heb. 10:28 (LIT/UBS4) Anyone (tis) having displaced (athetēsas) [the] law (nomon) of Moses (mōuseōs), upon (epi) two (dusin) or (ē) three (trisin) witnesses (martusin) dies away (apothnēskei) without (chōris) compassion (oiktirmōn).

Heb. 10:29 (LIT/UBS4) How much (posō) worse (cheironos), do you conclude (dokeite), shall one be made worthy (axiōthēsetai timōrias) [to die away, v28, RE], the one (ho) having walked down on (katapatēsas) the (ton) Son (huion) of the (tou) God (theou);

and (kai) [the one, ER] having led himself (hēgēsamenos) [to conclude, RE] the (to) blood (haima) of the (tēs) covenant (diathēkēs) [to be] common (koinon), (in (en) to which (hō) he was made holy (hēgiasthē)), and (kai) [the one, ER] having been in violation (enubrisas) of the (to) Spirit (pneuma) of the (tēs) grace (charitos)!?

(For the revealing by fire of those who are and who are not righteous, see Dan. 3; Mat. 3:10-12, 7:19, *13:24-51; Luke 3:9, 16-17, 12:49; John 15:6; Rom. 1:18; *1 Cor. 3:12-15; 2 Thes. 1:7-9; Heb. 10:26-29, 12:18; 1 Pet. 1:5-7; 2 Pet. 3:7-12; Jude 1:5-7; Rev. 8:5-11, 9:13-21; 14:18-20, 16:8-9, 17:16, *18:1-24, 20:7-15)

Heb. 10:30 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) we know (oidamen) the one (ton) having enunciated (eiponta), “Vengeance (ekdikēsis) [is] to me (emoi), I (egō) shall repay (antapodōsō)!”

(See Deut. 32:35)

And (kai) again (palin), “[The] Lord (kurios, YHWH) shall judge (krinei) the (ton) people (laon) of him (autou).”

(See Deut. 32:36)

Heb. 10:31 (LIT/UBS4) The one (to) [having walked down on the Son of the God, v29, RE] [is] fearful (phoberon) to fall (empesein) into (eis) [the] hands (cheiras) of [the] living (zōntas) God (theou).

Heb. 10:32 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) be reminded (anamimnēskesthe) of the (tas) previous (proteron) days (hēmeras) in (en) which (hais), you having been illuminated (phōtisthentes), you endured (hupemeinate) [a] great (pollēn) competition (athlēsin) of sufferings (pathēmatōn).

Heb. 10:33 (LIT/UBS4) Truly (men), this (touto) [competition, v32, RE] is one being made [a] theatrical performance (theatrizomenoi), for both (te) reproaches (oneidismois) and (kai) mental pressures (thlipsesin)!

But (de) [call to remembrance, v32, RE] this (touto), you having become (genēthentes) sharing partners (koinōnoi) of the ones (tōn) causing themselves to turn up390 (anastrephomenōn) thusly (houtōs), [of the ones, RE] [enduring reproaches and mental pressures, v32-33, RE].

Heb. 10:34 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) because (gar), to the (tois) bound ones (desmiois) you sympathized (sunepathēsate).

And (kai) the (tēn) plundering (harpagēn) of the (tōn) things being under control (huparchontōn) of you (humōn), you caused yourselves to receive to yourselves  (prosedexasthe) [the plundering, RE] with (meta) joy (charas), knowing (ginōskontes) to hold (echein) for yourselves (heautous) [a] stronger positioned (kreittona) subsistence (huparxin), [a] remaining (menousan) [subsistence, RE] also (kai).

Heb. 10:35 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), may you not throw away (mē apobalēte) the (tēn) boldness (parrēsian) of you (humōn), which (hētis) has (echei) [a] great (megalēn) wage given from (misthapodosian) [it, AE].

Heb. 10:36 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) you have (echete) [a] need (chreian) of endurance (hupomonēs), in order that (hina) having done (poiēsantes) the (to) desire (thelēma) of the (tou) God (theou) you may have caused yourselves to provide (komisēsthe) for the (tēn) promise (epaggelian).

Heb. 10:37 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar), yet (eti) as long as (hoson) [a] little (mikron) [time, AE]  [is] as long as (hoson) [before, AE] the one (ho) causing himself to come (erchomenos) shall arrive (hēxei), and (kai) he shall absolutely not be taking his time (ou chronisei)!

Heb. 10:38 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) righteous one (dikaios) of me (mou) shall cause himself to live (zēsetai) out (ek) of belief (pisteōs).

And (kai) if perhaps (ean) he may cause himself to be misarranged (huposteilētai), the (hē) soul (psuchē) of me (mou) does absolutely not well-approve (ouk eudokei) in (en) him (autō)!

Heb. 10:39 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) we (hēmeis) are ones (esmen) absolutely not (ouk) of [a] setback (hupostolēs) into (eis) loss (apōleian)!

BUT (alla), [we are ones, RE] of belief (pisteōs), into (eis) [a] periphery (peripoiēsin) of [the] soul (psuchēs)!
