1 THESSALONIANS

Chapter 5

Update:  2024.06.19

1 Thes. 5:1 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) about (peri) the (tōn) times (chronōn) and (kai) the (tōn) seasons (kairōn), brothers (adelphoi), you (humin) absolutely do not have (ou echete) [a] need (chreian) to cause me to write (graphesthai) [to you, AE].

1 Thes. 5:2 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) you have seen (oidate) it (autoi) exactly (akribōs), that (hoti) [the] day (hēmera) of [the] lord (kuriou) comes (erchetai) as (hōs) [a] thief (kleptēs) in (en) [the] night (hukti).

1 Thes. 5:3 (LIT/UBS4) Perhaps when (hotan) they may say (legōsin), “peace (eirēnē)" and (kai) "security (asphaleia)”, then (tote) sudden unapparent (aiphnidios) ruin (olethros) causes itself to loom over (ephistatai) them (autois), so be it as (hōsper) the (hē) pain (ōdin) to the (tē) [female, AE] holding (echousē) in (en) [her, AE] belly (gastri);

and (kai) no (), they may absolutely not escape (ou ekphugōsin)!

1 Thes. 5:4 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) you (humeis), brothers (adelphoi), are (este) absolutely not (ou) in (en) darkness (skotei), that (hina) the (hē) day (hēmera) [of [the] lord, v2, RE] may take you down (humas katalabē), as (hōs) [a] thief (kleptēs).

1 Thes. 5:5 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) you (humeis) all (pantes) are (este) sons (huioi) of light (phōtos), and (kai) sons (huioi) of day (hēmeras).

We are (semen) absolutely not (ouk) [sons, RE] of night (nuktos), but absolutely not (oude) [sons, RE] of darkness (skotous)!

(For Jesus Christ being prophesied as a great light coming, the one who would shed light on the knowledge of God’s Word for a people being caused to sit down in darkness, see Isa. 9:1-2, 49:1-6; Mat. 4:12-16, 10:26-27; *Mark 4:21-23; Luke 1:76-79, 2:25-32, 8:16-17, 11:33, 12:1-3; John 1:1-14, 3:1-21, 8:12, 9:5, 11:9-10, 12:34-36, 41-46; Acts 13:46-47, 26:22-23; 2 Cor. 4:1-6; Eph. 5:8, 13, 14; Col. 1:12; 1 Thes. 5:5; 1 Pet. 2:9; 2 Pet. 1:19; 1 John 2:8-10.)

1 Thes. 5:6 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun) then (ara), may we not be down asleep (mē katheudōmen) as (hōs) the (hoi) remaining (loipoi) [brothers, v4, RE], BUT (alla), may we stay awake (grēgorōmen), and (kai) may we be sober (nēphōmen)!

1 Thes. 5:7 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) the (hoi) [brothers, v4, ER] down sleeping (katheudontes) are down asleep (katheudousin) [in, AE] [the] night (nuktos), and (kai) the (hoi) [brothers, v4, ER] being drunk (methuskomenoi) are drunk (methousin) [in, AE] [the] night (nuktos).

1 Thes. 5:8 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) we (hēmeis) being (ontes) [sons, v5, RE] of [the] day (hēmeras), may we be sober (nēphōmen), we having enrobed ourselves in (endusamenoi) [a] chest plate (thōraka) of belief (pisteōs) and (kai) love (agapēs), and (kai) [a] helmet (perikephalaian) of [the] hope (elpida) of wholeness (sōtērias).

1 Thes. 5:9 (LIT/UBS4) Because (hoti) the (ho) God (theos) of us (hēmas) absolutely did not place himself (ouk etheto) into (eis) anger (orgēn), BUT (alla), into (eis) [us, AE], [a] periphery (peripoiēsin) of wholeness (sōtērias), through (dia) the (tou) lord (kuriou) of us (hēmōn), Jesus (Iēsou) Christ (Christou),

(The God placed himself into a periphery of wholeness, into all of those around (peri) him being made (poieo) whole.)

1 Thes. 5:10 (LIT/UBS4) the (tou) [brother, v4, ER] having died away (apothanontos) over (huper) [the sake, AE] [of us, RE];

in order that (hina) whether (eite) we may be awake (grēgorōmen), [or, AE] whether (eite) we may be down asleep (katheudōmen), at the same time (hama) we may live (zēsōmen) together with (sun) him (autō)!

1 Thes. 5:11 (LIT/UBS4) Through [the sake, AE] of whom (dio) console (parakaleite) one another (allēlous), and (kai) one (heis) [brother, v4, ER] build [a] domed-roof house3618 (oikodomeite) of the (ton) [other, AE] one (hena), down according to as (kathōs) you do (poieite) also (kai)!

(For what is God’s prophesied true “tent”, his new holy place under his new covenant, the prophesied promise of the Father to place himself into believers to live in them as his new permanent domicile, a true “tent” not built with mortal’s hands but with his own hand, see Ex. 15:17; 2 Sam. 7:5-16; Isa. 8:14; Ezek. 11:16; Joel 2:28-29; Amos 9:11-12; Mat. 3:11, 16:18, 26:61, 27:39-40; Mark 14:58, 15:29; Luke 3:21-22, 24:49; *John 2:19-22, 3:1-, 4:20-24, 7:37-39, 14:2, *23; Acts 1:4-5, 2:16-18, 33, 38-39, *7:44-50, *15:16-18, *17:24, *20:28; *Rom. 8:9-11, 12:4-5; 1 Cor. *3:16-17, *6:19-20, 10:16-17, 12:12-28; *2 Cor. 5:1, *6:16-18; Gal. 3:14, 22; Eph. 1:13-14, 22-23, *2:17-22, 3:6, 4:11-16, 5:30-32; Col. 1:18-27, 2:6-10, 3:15; *1 Thes. 5:9-11; *1 Tim. 3:15; *2 Tim. 1:14; Heb. *3:4-6, 8:2, *9:11-15, *24, 10:21, 36; 1 Pet. 2:4-5; 1 John 4:12-16; Rev. 3:12, 7:15, 11:19, *13:6, *21:3, 22)

1 Thes. 5:12 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) we inquire (erōtōmen) of you (humas), brothers (adelphoi), to have seen (eidenai) the (tous) [brothers, RE] laboring (kopiōntas) among (en) you (humin), and (kai) [the brothers, RE] standing themselves before (proistamenous) you (humōn) in (en) [the] lord (kuriō) and (kai) making you mindful (nouthetountas humas);

1 Thes. 5:13 (LIT/UBS4) and (kai) to be led (hēgeisthai) of them (autous);

[and, RE] [to abound, AE] super-abundantly out over (huperekperissou) [them, RE] in (en) love (agapē), through (dia) [the sake, AE] of the (to) work (ergon) of them (autōn).

Be at peace (eirēneuete) among (en) yourselves (heautois).

1 Thes. 5:14 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) we accost (parakaloumen) you (humas), brothers (adelphoi), make mindful (noutheteite) the (tous) [brothers, RE] not arranged (ataktous);

cause yourselves to encourage (paramutheisthe) the (tous) [brothers, RE] of little soul (oligopsuchous);

1 Thes. 5:15 (LIT/UBS4) See that (horate) not (mē) anyone (tis) may give away (apodō) to anyone (tini) evil (kakon) against (anti) evil (kakou), BUT (alla), always (pantote) pursue (diōkete) the (to) good (agathon), both (kai) in (eis) one another (allēlous) and (kai) in (eis) all (pantas).

1 Thes. 5:19 (LIT/UBS4) <Do> not () quench (sbennute) the (to) Spirit (pneuma).

1 Thes. 5:20 (LIT/UBS4) <Do> not () reject absolutely not one (exoutheneite) [brother, v14, ER] of prophecies (prophēteias)!

1 Thes. 5:21 But (de) prove (dokimazete) all (panta) [brothers, v14, ER].

Hold down onto (katechete) the (to) beautiful (kalon) [brother, v14, ER].

1 Thes. 5:22 (LIT/UBS4) Cause yourselves to hold away (apechesthe) from (apo) every (pantos) sight (eidous) of evil (ponērou).

1 Thes. 5:23 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) <may> the (ho) God (theos) of the (tēs) peace (eirēnēs) himself (autos) he keep you holy (hagiasai humas), completely whole (holoteleis).

And (kai) your (humōn) whole lot (holoklēron), the (to) Spirit (pneuma), and (kai) the (hē) soul (psuchē), and (kai) the (to) body (sōma), may it have been watchfully kept (tērētheiē) faultlessly (amemptōs), in (en) the (tē) presence (parousia) of the (tou) lord (kuriou) of us (hēmōn), Jesus (Iēsou) Christ (Christou).
