Chapter 3


3:1 But (de) in (en) [the] fifteenth (pentekaidekatō) year (etei) of the (tēs) leadership (hēgemonias) of Tiberius (Tiberiou) Caesar (Kaisaros), he being [a] leader (hēgemoneuontos) of Pontius (Pontiou) Pilate (Pilatou) of the (tēs) Judaea (Ioudaias), and (kai) of Herod (Hērōdou) being tetrarch (tetraarchountos) of the (tēs) Galilee (Galilaias), and (de) of Philip (Philippou) the (tou) brother (adelphou) of him (autou) being tetrarch (tetraarchountos) of the (tēs) Ituraea (Itouraias) and (kai) of [the] region (chōras) of Trachonitis (Trachōnitidos), and (kai) of Lysanias (Lusaniou) being tetrarch (tetraarchountos) of the (tēs) Abilene (Abilēnēs),


3:2 [he being a leader, v1, RE] over (epi) [the time of the, AE] chief sacrificial priest (archiereōs) Annas (Hanna) and (kai) Caiaphas (Kaiapha), [a] statement (rhēma) of God (theou) caused itself to come to pass (egeneto) over (epi) [the sake, AE] of John (Iōannēn), son (huion) of the (ton) Zacharias (Zachariou), in (en) the (tē) desolate place (erēmō).


3:3 And (kai) he came (ēlthen) into (eis) every (pasan) region around (perichōron) the (tou) Jordan (Iordanou), preaching (kērussōn) [a] baptism (baptisma) of repentance (metanoias) into (eis) [a] letting go (aphesin) of sins (hamartiōn).


3:4 As (hōs) it has been written (gegraptai) in (en) [a/the] scroll (biblō) of Words (logōn) of Isaiah (Hsaiou) the (tou) prophet (prophētou), “[A] voice (phōnē) of shouting (boōntos) in (en) the (tē) desolate place (erēmō), ‘Make ready (hetoimasate) the (tēn) way (hodon) of [the] Lord (kuriou / YHWH);


make (poieite) straight (eutheias) the (tas) paths (tribous) of Him (autou).


3:5 Every (pasa) ravine (pharanx) shall be filled (plērōthēsetai), and (kai) every (pan) mountain (oros) and (kai) hill (bounos) shall be humbled (tapeinōthēsetai);


and (kai) the (ta) crooked (skolia) [way, v4, RE] shall cause itself to be (estai) [made, AE] into (eis) [a] straight (eutheian) [way, v4, RE], and (kai) the (hai) rough (tracheiai) [paths, v4, RE] [shall be humbled, v25, RE] into (eis) level (leias) ways (hodous);


3:6 and (kai) all (pasa) flesh (sarx) shall cause itself to gaze at (opsetai) the (to) wholeness (sōtērion) of the (tou) God (theou / YHWH).’”

3:7 Therefore (oun) he was saying (elegen) to the (tois) crowds (ochlois) causing themselves to go out (ekporeuomenois) to be baptized (baptisthēnai) under (hup’) [authority, AE] of him (autou), “Ones generated (gennēmata) of vipers (echidnōn), who (tis) has pointed out (hupedeixen) to you (humin) to flee (phugein) from (apo) the (tēs) anger (orgēs) being about (mellousēs) [to come, AE]!?


3:8 Therefore (oun) you make (poiēsate) produce (karpous), ones worthy (axious) of the (tēs) repentance (metanoias).


And (kai) may you not cause yourselves to start (mē arxēsthe) to say (legein) in (en) yourselves (heautois), ‘We have (echomen) [a] father (patera), the (ton) Abraham (Abraam).’


Because (gar) I say (legō) to you (humin), that (hoti) the (ho) God (theos) can inherently power Himself (dunatai) to arouse (egeirai) ones born (tekna) to the (tō) Abraham (Abraam) out (ek) of the (tōn) stones (lithōn) of these (toutōn)!


3:9 But (de) already (ēdē) the (hē) axe (axinē) also (kai) is laid (keitai) to (pros) the (tēn) root (rhizan) of the (tōn) trees (dendrōn.


Therefore (oun), every (pan) tree (dendron) not (mē) making (poioun) beautiful (kalon) produce (karpon) is cut out (ekkoptetai), and (kai) is thrown (balletai) into (eis) [a] fire (pur)!”

3:10 And (kai) the (hoi) crowds (ochloi) were inquiring (epērōtōn) of him (auton), saying (legontes), “Therefore (oun) what (ti) may we do (poiēsōmen)!?”


3:11 But (de) he having been caused to make [a] decision (apokritheis), he was saying (elegen) to them (autois), “The one (ho) having (echōn) two (duo) shirts (chitōnas), share together with (metadotō) the one (tō) not (mē) having (echonti) [[a] shirt, RE].


And (kai) the one (ho) having (echōn) foods (brōmata), let him do (poieitō) likewise (homoiōs).”


3:12 But (de) termination-tax collectors5057 (telōnai) also (kai) having come (elthon) to be baptized (baptisthēnai), they enunciated (eipan) also (kai) to (pros) him (auton), “Teacher (didaskale), what (ti) may we do (poiēsōmen)!?”


3:13 But (de) the (ho) [John, v2, RE] enunciated (eipen) to (pros) them (autous), “Habitually practice (prassete) not one more thing (mēden pleon) aside (para) from the (to) thing having been thoroughly arranged (diatetagmenon) for you (humin) [to practice, RE]!”


3:14 But (de) ones arming themselves (strateuomenoi) also (kai) were inquiring (epērōtōn) of him (auton), saying (legontes), “We (hēmeis) also (kai), what (ti) may we do (poiēsōmen)!?”


And (kai) he enunciated (eipen) to them (autois), “Thoroughly shake1286 (diaseisēte) not one (mēdena), but nor (mēde) be fig informers4811 (sukophantēsēte)!


And (kai) be content (arkeisthe) for the (tois) wages (opsōniois) of you (humōn)!”


3:15 But (de) of the (tou) people (laou) expecting (prosdokōntos), and (kai) all (pantōn) causing themselves to reason through (dialogizomenōn) in (en) the (tais) hearts (kardiais) of them (autōn) about (peri) the (tou) John (Iōannou), whether or not (mēpote) he (autos) may possibly be (eiē) the (ho) Christ (Christos),


3:16 the (ho) John (Iōannēs) caused himself to make [a] decision (apekrinato), saying (legōn) to all (pasin), “Truly (men), I (egō) baptize (baptizō) you (humas) to water (hudati)


But (de) the one (ho) stronger than (ischuroteros) me (mou) causes himself to come (erchatai), of whom (hou) I am absolutely not (ouk eimi) [a] suitable one (hikanos) to let loose (lusai) of the (ton) thong (himanta) of the (tōn) underbindings (hupodēmatōn) of him (autou)


He (autos) shall baptize (baptisei) you (humas) in (en) holy (hagiō) Spirit (pneumati), and (kai) fire (puri);


3:17 of whom (hou) the (to) winnowing shovel (ptuon) [is] in (en) the (tē) hand (cheiri) of him (autou) to thoroughly clean (diakatharai) the (tēn) threshing floor (halōna) of him (autou), and (kai) to bring together (sunagagein) the (ton) grain (siton) into (eis) the (tēn) apothecary (apothēkēn) of him (autou).


But (de) the (to) chaff (achuron) he shall burn down (katakausei) [in, v16, RE] an unquenchable fire (asbestō puri)!”

3:18 Therefore (oun), truly (men), [with, AE] many (polla) [words, v4, RE] of another kind (hetera) also (kai) he was causing himself to evangelize (euēngelizeto), calling alongside (parakalōn) the (ton) people (laon)!


3:19 But (de) the (ho) Herod (Hērōdēs) the (ho) tetrarch (tetraarchēs), he being reproved (elenchomenos) under (hup’) him (autou) about (peri) Herodias (Hērōdiados), the (tēs) female (gunaikos) of the (tou) brother (adelphou) of him (autou), and (kai) about (peri) all (pantōn) evil things (ponērōn) which (hōn) the (ho) Herod (Hērōdēs) did (epoiēsen),


3:20 he added (prosethēken) this (touto) also (kai) upon (epi) all things (pasin) [he did], and (kai) he locked down (katekleisen) the (ton) John (Iōannēn) in (en) [a] guardroom (phulakē).


3:21 But (de) it caused itself to come to pass (egeneto) in (en) the (tō) [time, AE] absolutely all (hapanta) the (ton) people (laon) [were] to be baptized (baptisthēnai), Jesus (Iēsou) also (kai) having been baptized (baptisthentos), he was causing himself to be well-thankful toward4336 (proseuchomenou) [God, AE] also (kai) for the (ton) heaven (ouranon) to be opened up (aneōchthēnai),


3:22 and (kai) for the (to) Spirit (pneuma), the (to) holy one (hagion), to come down (katabēnai) upon (ep’) him (auton) [in, AE] [a] bodily (sōmatikō) sight (eidei) as (hōs) of [a] dove (peristeran), and (kai) for [a] voice (phōnēn) out (ex) of heaven (ouranou) to cause itself to come to pass (genesthai), “You (su) are (ei) the (ho) son (huios) of Me (mou), the (ho) beloved one (agapētos);


in (en) you (soi) I well-approved (eudokēsa).”

3:23 And (kai) Jesus (Iēsous) himself (autos), causing himself to start (archomenos), was being (ēn) as if (hōsei) thirty (triakonta) years (etōn) [of age, AE];
