Chapter 2

 

2:1 But (de) it was caused to come to pass (egeneto) in (en) the (tais) days (hēmerais) for those things (ekeinais), a dogma (dogma) came out (exēlthen) from alongside (para) of Caesar (Kaisaros) Augustus (Augoustou) for all (pasan) of the (tēn) inhabited land (oikoumenēn) to be registered583 (apographesthai).

 

2:2 This (hautē) first (prōtē) tax registration (apographē) was caused to come to pass (egeneto) of Cyrenius (Kurēniou), he being a leader (hēgemoneuontos) of the (tēs) Syria (Surias).

 

2:3 And (kai) all (pantes) were being caused to go (eporeuonto) to be registered583 (apographesthai), each one (hekastos) into (eis) the (tēn) city (polin) of himself (heautou).

 

2:4 But (de) Joseph (Iōsēph) also (kai) went up (anebē) from (apo) Galilee (Galilaias), out (ek) [of the] city (poleōs) of Nazareth (Nazareth) into (eis) the (tēn) Judaea (Ioudaian), into (eis) a city (polin) of David (Dauid) which one (hētis) is called aloud (kaleitai) Bethlehem (Bēthleem), (through (dia) the (to) [sake] of him (auton) to be (einai) out (ex) of [the] house (oikou) and (kai) paternity (patrias) of David (Dauid)),

 

2:5 to cause himself to be registered583 (apograpsasthai) together with (sun) Mariam (Mariam), the (tē) [Mariam] having been espoused (emnēsteumenē) to him (autō), she being (ousē) swelled inside (enkuō).

 

2:6 But (de) it caused itself to come to pass (egeneto) in (en) the (tō) [days] they (autous) [were] to be (einai) there (ekei), the (hai) days (hēmerai) were fulfilled (eplēsthēsan) of the (tou) [time] [for] her (autēn) to bear (tekein).

 

2:7 And (kai) she bore (eteken) the (ton) son (huion) of her (autēs), the (ton) first-born (prōtotokon), and (kai) she swaddled (esparganōsen) him (auton).

 

And (kai) she reclined him up347 (aneklinen auton) in (en) a crib (phatnē), through the reason that (dioti) there was being (ēn) absolutely not (ouk) a place (topos) for them (autois) in (en) the (tō) lodging place (katalumati)!

 

2:8 And (kai) shepherds (poimenes) were being (ēsan) in (en) the (tē) region (chōra), the one (tē) to her (autē), piping in the field63 (agraulountes), ones keeping watchful guard (phulassontes) also (kai), watches (phulakas) of the (tēs) night (nuktos) over (epi) the (tēn) flock (poimnēn) of them (autōn).

 

2:9 And (kai) a messenger (angelos) of [the] Lord (kuriou) stood over (epestē) them (autois), and (kai) glory (doxa) of [the] Lord (kuriou) shone around (perielampsen) them (autous), and (kai) they were caused to be in fear (ephobēthēsan) of a great (megan) fear (phobon).

 

2:10 And (kai) the (ho) messenger (angelos) enunciated (eipen) to them (autois), “Do not be made fearful (mē phobeisthe).” 

 

Because (gar) behold (idou), I cause myself to evangelize (euangelizomai) to you (humin) of great (megalēn) joy (charan), of one whom (hētis) shall cause himself to be (estai) for all (panti) the (tō) people (laō);

 

2:11 that (hoti) for you (humin) was born (etechthē) today (sēmeron), in (en) [the] city (polei) of David (dauid), a savior4990 (sōtēr) who (hos) is (estin) a lord (kurios), Christ (Christos).

 

2:12 And (kai) this (touto) [shall be] to you (humin) the (to) sign (sēmeion):

 

you shall find (heurēsete) a baby (brephos) having been swaddled (esparganōmenon), and (kai) being laid (keimenon) in (en) a crib (phatnē).”

 

2:13 And (kai) suddenly (exaiphnēs) a plethora (plēthos) of a heavenly army (stratias ouraniou) caused itself to come to pass (egeneto), together with (sun) the (tō) messenger (angelō), praising (ainountōn) the (ton) God (theon), and (kai) saying (legontōn),

 

2:14 “Glory (doxa) in (en) [the] highest places (hupsistois) [is] to God (theō).

 

And (kai) upon (epi) land (gēs) [there is] peace (eirēnē) among (en) mortals (anthrōpois) of a good expectation (eudokia)!”

 

2:15 And (kai) it caused itself to came to pass (egeneto) when (hōs) the (hoi) messengers (angeloi) went away (apēlthon) from (ap’) them (autōn) into (eis) the (ton) heaven (ouranon), the (hoi) shepherds (poimenes) were speaking (elaloun) to (pros) one another (allēlous), “By all means (dē) may we go through (dielthōmen) unto (heōs) Bethlehem (Bēthleem), and (kai) may we see (idōmen) the (to) statement (rhēma) of this (touto), the (to) [statement] having come to pass (gegonos), which (ho) the (ho) Lord (kurios) made known (egnōrisen) to us (hēmin).”

 

2:16 And (kai) they came (ēlthan), having made haste (speusantes), and (kai) they found (aneuran) both (te) the (tēn) Mariam (Mariam) and (kai) the (ton) Joseph (Iōsēph), and (kai) the (ton) baby (brephos) being laid (keimenon) in (en) the (tē) crib (phatnē).

 

2:17 But (de) they having seen (idontes) [the baby, v12, 15], they made [it] known (egnōrisan) about (peri) the (tou) statement (rhēmatos) of the (tou) [messengers, v15] having been spoken (lalēthentos) to them (autois), about (peri) the (tou) young child (paidiou) of this (toutou).

 

2:18 And (kai) all (pantes) the ones (hoi) having heard (akousantes), they were amazed (ethaumasan) about (peri) the things (tōn) having been spoken (lalēthentōn) to (pros) them (autous) under (hupo) [authority] of the (tōn) shepherds (poimenōn).

 

2:19 But (de) the (hē) Mariam (Mariam) was watchfully keeping (sunetērei) all (panta) of the (ta) statements (rhēmata) of these (tauta), throwing [them] together (sumballousa) in (en) to the (tē) heart (kardia) of her (autēs).

 

2:20 And (kai) the (hoi) shepherds (poimenes) returned (hupestrepsan), glorifying (doxazontes) and (kai) praising (ainountes) the (ton) God (theon) over (epi) all (pasin) things which (hois) they heard (ēkousan) and (kai) they saw (eidon), down according to as (kathōs) it was spoken (elalēthē) to (pros) them (autous).

 

2:21 And (kai) when (hote) eight (oktō) days (hēmerai) were fulfilled (eplēsthēsan), of the (tou) [days] to circumcise (peritemein) him (auton), the (to) name (onoma) of him (autou) was called aloud (eklēthē) also (kai), Jesus (Iēsous);

 

the (to) [name] having been called aloud (klēthen) under (hupo) [authority] of the (tou) messenger (angelou), before (pro) the (tou) [day] of him (auton) to be taken together with4815 (sullēmphthēnai) [her] in (en) the (tē) belly (koilia).

 

2:22 And (kai) when (hote), down according to (kata) the (ton) law (nomon) of Moses (Mōuseōs), the (hai) days (hēmerai) of the (tou) cleansing (katharismou) of them (autōn) were fulfilled (eplēsthēsan), they led him up (anēgagon auton) into (eis) Jerusalem (Hierosoluma) to stand [him] alongside (parastēsai) to the (tō) Lord (kuriō),

 

2:23 (down according to as (kathōs) it has been written (gegraptai) in (en) law (nomō) of [the] Lord (kuriou), that (hoti), “Every (pan) male (arsen) thoroughly opening (dianoigon) a matrix (mētran) shall be called aloud (klēthēsetai) a holy one (hagion) to the (tō) Lord (kuriō);)

 

2:24 and (kai) of the (tou) [law] to give (dounai) a sacrifice (thusian) down according to (kata) the (to) [statement] having been stated (eirēmenon) in (en) the (tō) law (nomō) of [the] Lord (kuriou), “a pair (zeugos) of turtledoves (trugonōn), or (ē) two (duo) younglings (nossous) of doves (peristerōn).”

 

2:25 And (kai) behold (idou), there was being (ēn) a mortal (anthrōpos) in (en) Jerusalem (Hierousalēm) to whom (hō) [was the] name (onoma) Simeon (Sumeōn)!

 

And (kai) the (ho) mortal (anthrōpos), this one (houtos), [was being] a righteous one (dikaios), and (kai) a well-received one (eulabēs), one causing himself to receive to (prosdechomenos) [himself] [the] consolation (paraklēsin) of Israel (Israēl).

 

And (kai) holy (hagion) Spirit (pneuma) was being (ēn) upon (ep’) him (auton).

 

2:26 And (kai) [holy Spirit, v25] was being (ēn) to him (autō), he having been admonished (kechrēmatismenon) under (hupo) [authority] of the (tou) Spirit (pneumatos), the (tou) holy one (hagiou), not (mē) to see (idein) death (thanaton), or (ē) perhaps (an) until (prin) he may see (idē) the (ton) Christ (Christon) of [the] Lord (kuriou).

 

2:27 And (kai) he came (ēlthen) in (en) the (tō) Spirit (pneumati) into (eis) the (to) sacred place (hieron).

 

And (kai) in (en) the (tō) [time] to bring into (eisagagein) [the sacred place] the (tous) parents (goneis) of the (to) young child (paidon) Jesus (Iēsoun), of the (tou) [time] to do (poiēsai) for them (autous) down according to (kata) the (to) [injunction] of the (tou) law (nomou), it having been considered a custom (eithismenon) about (peri) him (autou)

 

2:28 he (autos) also (kai) caused himself to receive (edexato) him (auto) into (eis) the (tas) arms (ankalas) [of him].

 

And (kai) he eulogized (eulogēsen) the (ton) God (theon), and (kai) he enunciated (eipen),

 

2:29 “Now (nun) send away (apolueis) the (ton) slave (doulon) of you (sou) in (en) peace (eirēnē), master (despota), down according to (kata) the (to) statement (rhēma) of you (sou),

 

2:30 because (hoti) the (hoi) eyes (ophthalmoi) of me (mou) saw (eidon) the (to) wholeness (sōtērion) of you (sou)

 

2:31 which (ho) you made ready (hētoimasas) down before (kata) [the] face (prosōpon) of all (pantōn) of the (tōn) peoples (laōn);

 

2:32 [to be] a light (phos) into (eis) a revelation (apokalupsin) [for the] ethnic groups (ethnōn), and (kai) [to be] a glory (doxan) of [the] people (laou) of you (sou), Israel (Israēl)!”

 

2:33 And (kai) the (ho) father (patēr) of him (autou) and (kai) the (hē) mother (mētēr) were (ēn) ones being amazed (thaumazontes) over (epi) the things (tois) being spoken (laloumenois) about (peri) him (autou).

 

2:34 And (kai) Simeon (Sumeōn) eulogized (eulogēsen) them (autous), and (kai) he enunciated (eipen) to (pros) Mariam (Mariam) the (tēn) mother (mētera) of him (autou), “Behold (idou), this one (houtos) is laid (keitai) into (eis) [causing] a fall (ptōsin) and (kai) a standing up (anastasin) of many (pollōn) in (en) the (tō) Israel (Israēl);

 

and (kai) into (eis) a sign (sēmeion) being spoken against (antilegomenon).

2:35 But (de) of you (sou) also (kai), ‘A rapier (rhomphaia) shall cause itself to come through (dieleusetai) the (tēn) soul (psuchēn) of her (autēs);

 

it so being that (hopōs) perhaps (an) [the] dialogues (dialogismoi) out (ek) of many (pollōn) hearts (kardiōn) may be revealed (apokaluphthōsin)!’”

 

2:36 And (kai) there was being (ēn) Anna (Hanna), a prophetess (prophētis), a daughter (thugatēr) of Phanuel (Phanouēl), out (ek) of [the] tribe (phulēs) of Aser (Asēr).

 

This one (hautē) having progressed (probebēkuia) in (en) many (pollais) days (hēmerais), she having lived (zēsasa) with (meta) a male (andros) seven (hepta) years (etē) from (apo) the (tēs) virginity (parthenias) of her (autēs),

 

2:37 she (autē) [was being, v36, RE] a bereaved one (chēra) also (kai), until (heōs) eighty-four (ogdoēkonta tessarōn) years (etōn);

 

[she was being, v36, RE] one who (hē) was absolutely not causing herself to stand away from (ouk aphistato) the (tou) sacred place (hierou), serving (latreuousa) night (nukta) and (kai) day (hēmeran) for fastings (nēsteiais) and (kai) prayers of need (deēsesin)!

 

2:38 And (kai) she having stood over (epistasa) the (tē) hour (hōra) for her (autē) [to pray], she was causing herself to confess (anthōmologeito) to the (tō) God (theō).

 

And (kai) she was speaking (elalei) about (peri) him (autou) to all (pasin) the ones (autois) causing themselves to receive to (prosdechomenois) [themselves] a redemption (lutrōsin) of Jerusalem (Hierousalēm).

 

2:39 And (kai) as (hōs) [Mariam and Joseph, v16, RE] completed (etelesan) all things (panta), the things (ta) down according to (kata) the (ton) law (nomon) of [the] Lord (kuriou), they turned back (epestrepsan) into (eis) the (tēn) Galilee (Galilaian), into (eis) [the] city (polin) of themselves (heautōn).

 

2:40 But (de) the (to) young child (paidion) was growing (ēuxanen), and (kai) he was being made powerful (ekrataiouto), one being filled (plēroumenon) [with, AE] wisdom (sophia).

 

And (kai) grace (charis) of God (theou) was being (ēn) upon (ep’) him (auto).

 

2:41 And (kai) the (hoi) parents (goneis) of him (autou) were causing themselves to go (eporeuonto) down (kat’) [every, AE] year (etos) into (eis) Jerusalem (Hierousalēm) for the (tē) feast (heortē) of the (tou) Passover (Pascha).

 

2:42 And (kai) when (hote) he caused himself to become (egeneto) [one being filled [with] wisdom, v40, RE] of twelve (dōdeka) years (etōn), of them (autōn) walking up (anabainontōn) down according to (kata) the (to) custom (ethos) of the (tēs) feast (heortēs),

 

2:43 and (kai) they having made complete (teleiōsantōn) the (tas) days (hēmeras) [of the feast, v42, RE], in (en) the (tō) [day, ER] of them (autous) to return (hupostrephein), the (ho) child (pais) Jesus (Iēsous) endured (hupemeinen) in (en) Jerusalem (Hierousalēm).

 

And (kai) the (hoi) parents (goneis) of him (autou) absolutely did not know (ouk egnōsan) [of it]!

 

2:44 But (de) they having decided (nomisantes) of him (auton) to be (einai) in (en) the (tē) synod (sunodia), they went (ēlthon) [on their] way (hodon) a day (hēmeras).

 

And (kai) they were searching him up327 (anezētoun auton) among (en) the (tois) related ones (sungeneusin) and (kai) the (tois) known ones (gnōstois).

 

2:45 And (kai) they not having found (mē heurontes) [him, v44], they returned (hupestrepsan) into (eis) Jerusalem (Hierousalēm) searching him up327 (anazētountes auton).

 

2:46 And (kai) it caused itself to come to pass (egeneto) with (meta) [the passing] of three (treis) days (hēmeras), they found (heuron) him (auton) in (en) the (tō) sacred place (hierō) causing himself to sit down (kathezomenon) in (en) [the] midst (mesō) of the (tōn) teachers (didaskalōn), and (kai) he hearing (akouonta) them (autōn) and (kai) he inquiring (eperōtōnta) of them (autous)!

 

2:47 But (de) all (pantes) the ones (hoi) being ones hearing (akouontes) him (autou) were causing themselves to be ecstatic (existanto) over (epi) the (tē) intelligence (sunesei), and (kai) the (tais) decisions (apokrisesin) of him (autou)!

 

2:48 And (kai) they having seen (idontes) him (auton), they were knocked out1605 (exeplagēsan)!  

 

And (kai) the (hē) mother (mētēr) of him (autou) enunciated (eipen) to (pros) him (auton), “Born one (teknon), why (ti) did you do (epoiēsas) to us (hēmin) thusly (houtōs)!?

 

Behold (idou), the (ho) father (patēr) of you (sou) and I (kagō) are being pained (odunōmenoi)!

 

We were searching (ezētoumen) for you (se)!”

 

2:49 And (kai) he enunciated (eipen) to (pros) them (autous), “What (ti), that (hoti) you were searching (ezēteite) for me (me)!?

 

Had you absolutely not seen (ouk ēdeite) that (hoti) it is required (dei) for me (me) to be (einai) in (en) to the things (tois) of the (tou) Father (patros) of me (mou)!?”

 

2:50 And (kai) they (autoi) absolutely did not put together (ou sunēkan) the (to) statement (rhēma) which (ho) he spoke (elalēsen) to them (autois)!

 

2:51 And (kai) he walked down (katebē) with (met’) them (autōn) and (kai) he came (ēlthen) into (eis) Nazareth (Nazareth).

 

And (kai) he was being (ēn) one being put in submission (hupotassomenos) to them (autois).

 

And (kai) the (hē) mother (mētēr) of him (autou) was thoroughly watchfully keeping (dietērei) all (panta) the (ta) statements (rhēmata) in (en) the (tē) heart (kardia) of her (autēs).

 

2:52 And (kai) Jesus (Iēsous) was beating forward4298 (proekopten) in (en) the (tē) wisdom (sophia), and (kai) maturity (hēlikia), and (kai) grave (chariti), alongside (para) to God (theō) and (kai) to mortals (anthrōpois).
