JOHN

Chapter 18

Update:  2024.03.07

John 18:1 (LIT/UBS4) Jesus (Iēsous) having enunciated (eipōn) these things (tauta), he came out (exēlthen) together with (sun) the (tois) disciples (mathētais) of him (autou) [to the, AE] other side (peran) of the (tou) storm flow (cheimarrou) of the (tou) Kidron (Kedrōn), where (hopou) there was being (ēn) [a] garden (kēpos), into (eis) which (hon) he (autos) and (kai) the (hoi) disciples (mathētai) of him (autou) entered in (eisēlthen).

John 18:2 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) Judas (Ioudas) also (kai), the one (ho) passing him aside (paradidous auton), had seen (ēdei) the (ton) place (topon), because (hoti) many times (pollakis) Jesus (Iēsous) was brought together (sunēchthē) there (ekei) with (meta) the (tōn) disciples (mathētōn) of him (autou).

John 18:3 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) Judas (Ioudas), having taken (labōn) the (tēn) cohort (speiran) and (kai) under-oarsmen5227 (hupēretas) out (ek) of the (tōn) chief sacrificial priests (archiereōn), and (kai) out (ek) of the (tōn) Pharisees (Pharisaiōn), he causes himself to come (erchetai) there (ekei) with (meta) torches (phanōn), and (kai) lamps (lampadōn), and (kai) weapons (hoplōn).

John 18:4 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), Jesus (Iēsous), he having seen (eidōs) all things (panta), the (ta) [things, RE] being caused to come (erchomena) upon (ep’) him (auton), he came out (exēlthen) and (kai) he says (legei) to them (autois), “For whom (tina) do you search (zēteite)?”

John 18:5 (LIT/UBS4) They were caused to make [a] decision (apekrithēsan) for him (autō), “Jesus (Iēsoun), the (ton) Nazarene (Nazōraion).”

He says (legei) to them (autois), “I (egō) am (eimi) [he, AE].”

But (de) Judas (Ioudas) also (kai), the one (ho) passing him aside (paradidous auton), had stood (heistēkei) with (met’) them (autōn).

John 18:6 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), as (hōs) he enunciated (eipen) to them (autois), “I (egō) am (eimi) [he, AE]”, they went away (apelthon) into (eis) the (ta) [garden, v1, RE] behind (opisō) and (kai) fell (epesan) groundward (chamai).

John 18:7 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), again (palin) he inquired (epērōtēsen) of them (autous), “For whom (tina) do you search (zēteite)?”

But (de) the ones (hoi) enunciated (eipan), “Jesus (Iēsoun), the (ton) Nazarene (Nazōraion).”

John 18:8 (LIT/UBS4) Jesus (Iēsous) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē), “I enunciated (eipon) to you (humin) that (hoti) I (egō) am (eimi) [he, AE].

Therefore (oun), if (ei) you search (zēteite) for me (eme), let go (aphete) of these ones (toutous) to get underway (hupagein)!”,

John 18:9 (LIT/UBS4) in order that (hina) the (ho) Word (logos) which (hon) he enunciated (eipen) may be fulfilled (plērōthē), that (hoti), "[Of the ones, AE] whom (hous) you have given (dedōkas) to me (moi), I absolutely did not lose (ouk apōlesa) absolutely not one (oudena) out (ex) of them (autōn)!"

John 18:10 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), Simon (Simōn) Peter (Petros) having (echōn) [a] knife (machairan), he drew (heilkusen) it (autēn), and (kai) he hit (epaisen) the (ton) slave (doulon) of the (tou) chief sacrificial priest (archiereōs) and (kai) cut away (apekopsen) the (to) ear lobe (ōtarion) of him (autou), the (to) right one (dexion).

But (de) [the] name (onoma) [given, AE] to the (tō) slave (doulō) was being (ēn) Malchus (Malchos).

John 18:11 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) enunciated (eipen) to the (tō) Peter (Petrō), “Throw (bale) the (tēn) knife (machairan) into (eis) the (tēn) place (thēkēn) [of it, AE]!

The (to) cup (potērion) which (ho) the (ho) Father (patēr) has given (dedōken) to me (moi), may I no, absolutely not drink (mē ou piō) it (auto)!?”

John 18:12 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (hē) cohort (speira), and (kai) the (ho) tribune (chiliarchos), and (kai) the (hoi) under-oarsmen5257 (hupēretai) of the (tōn) Judeans (Ioudaiōn) together took (sunelabon) the (ton) Jesus (Iēsoun) and (kai) they bound (edēsan) him (auton).

John 18:13 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) they led (ēgagon) [him, v12, RE] to (pros) Annas (Hannan) first (prōton), because (gar) he was being (ēn) [the] father-in-law (pentheros) of the (tou) Caiaphas (Kaiapha), who (hos) was being (ēn) [a] chief sacrificial priest (archiereus) of the (tou) year (eniautou) of that (ekeinou).

John 18:14 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) Caiaphas (Kaiaphas) was being (ēn) the (ho) one having counseled together with (sumbouleusas) the (tois) Judeans (Ioudaiois), that (hoti) it is mutually beneficial (sumpherei) for one (hena) mortal (anthrōpon) to die away (apothanein) over (huper) [the sake, AE] of the (tou) whole, v11:50, RE] people (laou).

John 18:15 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) Simon (Simōn) Peter (Petros), and (kai) another (allos) disciple (mathētēs), was following (akolouthei) [sic] the (tō) Jesus (Iēsou).

But (de) the (ho) [other, RE] disciple (mathētēs), that one (ekeinos) was being (ēn) one known (gnōstos) to the (tō) chief sacrificial priest (archierei), and (kai) he entered in together with (suneisēlthen) the (tō) Jesus (Iēsou) into (eis) the (tēn) courtyard (aulēn) of the (tou) chief sacrificial priest (archiereōs).

John 18:16 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) Peter (Petros) had stood (heistēkei) toward (pros) the (tē) door (thura) outside (exō).

Therefore (oun), the (ho) disciple (mathētēs), the (ho) other one (allos), the one (ho) known (gnōstos) of the (tou) chief sacrificial priest (archiereōs), he came out (exēlthen) and (kai) enunciated (eipen) to the (tē) door-keeper (thurōrō), and (kai) he brought in (eisēgagen) the (ton) Peter (Petron).

John 18:17 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (hē) young maid (paidiskē), the (hē) door-keeper (thurōros), says (legei) to the (tō) Peter (Petrō), “Are (ei) you (su) also (kai) not (mē) out (ek) of the (tōn) disciples (mathētōn) of the (tou) mortal (anthrōpou) of this (toutou)?”

That one (ekeinos) says (legei), “I am (eimi) absolutely not (ouk)!”

John 18:18 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (hoi) slaves (douloi) and (kai) the (hoi) under-oarsmen5257 (hupēretai) had stood (heistēkeisan) [alongside, AE] [a] coal fire (anthrakian) having been made (pepoiēkotes), because (hoti) it was being (ēn) cold (psuchos) and (kai) they were warming themselves (ethermainonto).

But (de) the (ho) Peter (Petros) also (kai_r) was being (ēn) with (met’) them (autōn).

And (kai) having stood (hestōs), he was causing himself to be warmed (thermainomenos).

John 18:19 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) chief sacrificial priest (archiereus) inquired (ērōtēsen) of the (ton) Jesus (Iēsoun) about (peri) the (tōn) disciples (mathētōn) of him (autou), and (kai) about (peri) the (tēs) orthodoxy (didachēs) of him (autou).

John 18:20 (LIT/UBS4) Jesus (Iēsous) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē) for him (autō), “[In, AE] boldness (parrēsia) I (egō) have spoken (lelalēka) to the (tō) cosmos (kosmō).

I (egō) always (pantote) taught (edidaxa) in (en) [a] synagogue (sunagōgē), and (kai) in (en) the (tō) sacred place (hierō) where (hopou) all (pantes) the (hoi) Judeans (Ioudaioi) cause themselves to come together (sunerchontai)

And (kai) in (en) [a] hidden place (kruptō) I spoke (elalēsa) absolutely not one (ouden) [word, v9, RE]!

John 18:21 (LIT/UBS4) Why (ti) do you inquire (erōtas) of me (me)?

Inquire (erōtēson) of the ones (tous) hearing (akēkootas) what (ti) I spoke (elalēsa) to them (autois)

See (ide) these ones (houtoi), they have known (oidasin) which things (ha) I enunciated (eipon)!”

John 18:22 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) of him (autou) having enunciated (eipontos) these things (tauta), one (heis) of the (tōn) under-oarsmen5257 (hupēretōn) having stood alongside (parestēkōs) gave (edōken) [a] rodding (rhapisma) to the (tō) Jesus (Iēsou), having enunciated (eipōn), “Thusly (houtōs) you cause yourself to decide (apokrinē) [to enunciate, RE] to the (tō) chief sacrificial priest (archierei)!?”

John 18:23 (LIT/UBS4) Jesus (Iēsous) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē) for him (autō), “If (ei) I spoke (elalēsa) maliciously (kakōs), witness (marturēson) about (peri) the (tou) malicious thing (kakou)

But (de) if (ei) [I spoke, RE] beautifully (kalōs), why (ti) do you skin1194 (dereis) me (me)?”

John 18:24 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) Annas (Hannas) sent (apesteilen) him (auton), he having been bound (dedemenon), to (pros) Caiaphas (Kaiaphan) the (ton) chief sacrificial priest (archierea).

John 18:25 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) Simon (Simōn) Peter (Petros) was being (ēn) [there, AE].

And (kai) having stood (hestōs), he was causing himself to be warmed (thermainomenos).

Therefore (oun), they enunciated (eipon) to him (autō), “Are (ei) you (su) also (kai) not (mē) out (ek) of the (tōn) disciples (mathētōn) of him (autou)?”

That one (ekeinos) caused himself to deny (ērnēsato) [it, AE], and (kai) he enunciated (eipen), “I am (eimi) absolutely not (ouk)!”

John 18:26 (LIT/UBS4) One (heis) out (ek) of the (tōn) slaves (doulōn) of the (tou) chief sacrificial priest (archiereōs), he being (ōn) [a] genus together with (sungenēs) [the chief sacrificial priest, RE], of whom (hou) Peter (Petros) cut away (apekopsen) the (to) ear lobe (ōtion), he says (legei), “Did I absolutely not see (ouk egō eidon) you (se) in (en) the (tō) garden (kēpō) with (met’) him (autou)!?”

John 18:27 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), again (palin) Peter (Petros) caused himself to deny (ērnēsato) [it, AE], and (kai) straightaway (eutheōs) [a] rooster (alektōr) sounded (ephōnēsen).

John 18:28 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), they lead (agousin) the (ton) Jesus (Iēsoun) from (apo) the (tou) Caiaphas (Kaiapha) into (eis) the (to) praetorium (praitōrion).

But (de) it was being (ēn) early morning (prōi), and (kai) they (autoi) absolutely did not enter in (ouk eisēlthon) into (eis) the (to) praetorium (praitōrion), in order that (hina) they may not be contaminated (mē mianthōsin), BUT (alla), they may eat (phagōsin) the (to) Passover (pascha)!

John 18:29 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) Pilate (Pilatos) came out (exēlthen) outside (exō) to (pros) them (autous), and (kai) he shed light5346 (phēsin), “What (tina) accusation (katēgorian) of the (tou) mortal (anthrōpou), of this one (toutou), do you bring (pherete) down against (kata) [him, AE]?”

John 18:30 (LIT/UBS4) They were caused to make [a] decision (apekrithēsan), and (kai) they enunciated (eipan) to him (autō), “If (ei) this one (houtos) was not being (mē ēn) one doing (poiōn) [a] malicious thing  (kakon) perhaps (an) we absolutely would not have passed him aside (ouk paredōkamen auton) to you (soi)!”

John 18:31 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) Pilate (Pilatos) enunciated (eipen) to them (autois), “You (humeis) take (labete) him (auton), and (kai) you judge (krinate) him (auton) down according to (kata) the (ton) law (nomon) of you (humōn)!”

The (hoi) Judeans (Ioudaioi) enunciated (eipon) to him (autō), “Is it absolutely not being outside1832 (ouk exestin) [of the law, AE] for us (hēmin) to kill (apokteinai), absolutely not one (oudena)!?”,

John 18:32 (LIT/UBS4) in order that (hina) the (ho) Word (logos) of the (tou) Jesus (Iēsou) may be fulfilled (plērōthē), which (hon) he enunciated (eipen), signifying (sēmainōn) which (poiō) death (thanatō) he was being about (ēmellen) to die (apothnēskein).

John 18:33 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) Pilate (Pilatos) entered in (eisēlthen) again (palin) into (eis) the (to) praetorium (praitōrion) and (kai) sounded (ephōnēsen) for the (ton) Jesus (Iēsoun), and (kai) he enunciated (eipen) to him (autō), “Are (ei) you (su) the (ho) king (basileus) of the (tōn) Judeans (Ioudaiōn)!?”

John 18:34 (LIT/UBS4) Jesus (Iēsous) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē), “Do you (su) say (legeis) this (touto) from (apo) of yourself (seautou), or (ē) did others (alloi) enunciate (eipon) [this, AE] to you (soi) about (peri) me (emou)?”

John 18:35 (LIT/UBS4) The (ho) Pilate (Pilatos) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē), “I (egō) am (eimi) not yet (mēti) [a] Judean (Ioudaios).

The (to) ethnic group (ethnos), the one (to) of you (son), and (kai) the (hoi) chief sacrificial priests (archiereis), they passed you aside (paredōkan se) to me (emoi)!

What (ti) did you do (epoiēsas)!?”

John 18:36 (LIT/UBS4) Jesus (Iēsous) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē), “The (hē) Kingdom932 (basileia), the one (hē) of me (emē), it is (estin) absolutely not (ouk) out (ek) of the (tou) cosmos (kosmou) of this (toutou)

If (ei) the (hē) Kingdom932 (basileia) of this (toutou), the one (hē) of me (emē), was being (ēn) out (ek) of the (tou) cosmos (kosmou) of this (toutou), perhaps (an) the (hoi) under-oarsmen5257 (hupēretai), the ones (hoi) of me (emoi), they would be causing themselves to agonize (ēgōnizonto), in order that (hina) I may not be passed aside (mē paradothō) to the (tois) Judeans (Ioudaiois)

But (de) now (nun) the (hē) Kingdom932 (basileia), the one (hē) of me (emē), it is absolutely not (ouk estin) from here (enteuthen)!”

John 18:37 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) Pilate (Pilatos) enunciated (eipen) to him (autō), “Therefore you are absolutely not (oukoun ei su) [a] king (basileus)!?”

The (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē), “You (su) say (legeis) that (hoti) I am (eimi) [a] king (basileus)!

I (egō) have been generated (gegennēmai) into (eis) this (touto), and (kai) have come (elēlutha) into (eis) this (touto), into (eis) the (ton) cosmos (kosmon), in order that (hina) I may witness (marturēsō) to the (tē) Truth (alētheia).

The one (ho), anyone (pas), being (ōn) out (ek) of the (tēs) Truth (alētheias) hears (akouei) the (tēs) voice (phōnēs) of me (mou).”

John 18:38 (LIT/UBS4) The (ho) Pilate (Pilatos) says (legei) to him (autō), “What (ti) is (estin) Truth (alētheia)?”

And (kai) having enunciated (eipōn) this (touto), he came out (exēlthen) again (palin) to (pros) the (tous) Judeans (Ioudaious) and (kai) says (legei) to them (autois), “I (egō) find (heuriskō) but absolutely not one (oudemian) cause (aitian) [of maliciousness, v30, RE] in(en) him (autō)!

John 18:39 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) there is (estin) [a] custom together with (sunētheia) you (humin), that (hina) I may send one away (hena apolusō) to you (humin) in (en) the (tō) Passover (Pascha)

Therefore (oun), do you wish for yourselves (boulesthe) [that, AE] I may send away (apolusō) to you (humin) the (ton) king (basilea) of the (tōn) Judeans (Ioudaiōn)?”

John 18:40 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), they shouted (ekraugasan) again (palin), saying (legontes), “Not (mē) this one (touton), BUT (alla), the (ton) Barabbas (Barabbas)!”

But (de) the (ho) Barabbas (Barabbas) was being (ēn) [a] robber (lēstēs).
