JOHN

Chapter 12

Update:  2024.03.03

John 12:1 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous), six (hex) days (hēmerōn) before (pro) the (tou) Passover (pascha), came (ēlthen) into (eis) Bethany (Bēthanian), of where (hopou) was being (ēn) Lazarus (Lazaros) whom (hon) Jesus (Iēsous) awoke (ēgeiren) out (ek) of dead ones (nekrōn).

John 12:2 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), they made (epoiēsan) for him (autō) [a] dinner (deipnon) there (ekei), and (kai) the (hē) Martha (Martha) was ministering (diēkonei)

But (de) the (ho) Lazarus (Lazaros) was being (ēn) one (heis) out (ek) of the ones (tōn) causing himself to lie up345 (anakeimenōn) together with (sun) him (autō).

John 12:3 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (hē) Mariam (Mariam) having taken (labousa) [a] pound (litran) of myrrh ointment (murou), of very valuable (polutimou) genuine (pistikēs) nard (nardou), she oiled (ēleipsen) the (tous) feet (podas) of the (tou) Jesus (Iēsou), and (kai) she kneaded out (exemaxen) the (tous) feet (podas) of him (autou) to the (tais) hairs (thrixin) of her (autēs)!

But (de) the (hē) house (oikia) was filled (eplērōthē) out (ek) of the (tēs) fragrance (osmēs) of the (tou) ointment (murou).

John 12:4 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) Judas (Ioudas) says (legei), the (ho) Iscariot one (Iskariōtēs), one (heis) out (ek) of the (tōn) disciples (mathētōn) of him (autou), the one (ho) being about (mellōn) to pass him aside (auton paradidonai),

John 12:5 (LIT/UBS4) “Through (dia) [the sake, AE] of what (ti) [is] this (touto)!?

The (to) myrrh ointment (muron) was absolutely not sold (ouk eprathē) for three hundreds (triakosiōn) of denarii (dēnariōn), and (kai) given (edothē) to poor ones (ptōchois)!?”

John 12:6 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) he enunciated (eipen) this (touto) absolutely not (ouch) because (hoti) it was mattering (emelen) to him (autō) about (peri) the (tōn) poor ones (ptōchōn), BUT (all’), because (hoti) he was being (ēn) [a] thief (kleptēs), and (kai) he was carrying (ebastazen) the (to) tongue purse1101 (glōssokomon), holding (echōn) the things (ta) being thrown (ballomena) [into it, AE]!

John 12:7 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) enunciated (eipen), “Let her go (aphes autēn), in order that (hina) she may watchfully keep (tērēsē) it (auto) into (eis) the (tēn) day (hēmeran) of the (tou) preparation of me for [a] sepulcher (entaphiasmou mou).

John 12:8 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) you always have (pantote echete) the (tous) poor ones (ptōchous) with (meth’) yourselves (heautōn), but (de) me (eme) you absolutely do not always have (ou pantote echete)!”

(For who was to receive the collections, the gracious abundant sharings, like the collections from the believers in the area of Corinth, see what Christ Jesus and the apostles taught and preached, Mat. 19:20-21, 26:6-13; Mark 10:20-21, 14:3-9; Luke 4:18-19, *14:12-14, 21-22, 18:22, 19:8; John 12:3-8, 13:28-29; Acts 2:44-47; Rom. 15:26; 1 Cor. 13:3, 16:1-2; 2 Cor. 6:10, 8:9, 9:9; Gal. 2:10. )

John 12:9 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) large (polus) crowd (ochlos) out (ek) of the (tōn) Judeans (Ioudaiōn) knew (egnō) that (hoti) he is (estin) there (ekei).

And (kai) they came (ēlthon) absolutely not (ou) through (dia) [the sake, AE] of only (monon) the (ton) Jesus (Iēsoun) [being] [there, RE], BUT (all’), in order that (hina) they may see (idōsin) the (ton) Lazarus (Lazaron) also (kai), whom (hon) he awoke (ēgeiren) out (ek) of dead ones (nekrōn)!

John 12:10 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (hoi) chief sacrificial priests (archiereis) caused themselves to plan (ebouleusanto), in order that (hina) they may kill (apokteinōsin) the (ton) Lazarus (Lazaron) also (kai);

John 12:11 (LIT/UBS4) (LIT/UBS4) because (hoti) through (di’) [the arousal, v9, RE] of him (auton) many (polloi) of the (tōn) Judeans (Ioudaiōn) were getting underway (hupēgon), and (kai) they were believing (episteuon) into (eis) the (ton) Jesus (Iēsoun)!

John 12:12 (LIT/UBS4) Upon the morrow (tē epaurion) the (ho) large (polus) crowd (ochlos), the one (ho) having come (elthōn) into (eis) the (tēn) feast (heortēn), they having heard (akousantes) that (hoti) the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) causes himself to come (erchetai) into (eis) Jerusalem (Hierosoluma),

John 12:13 (LIT/UBS4) they took (elabon) the (ta) branches (baia) of the (tōn) palms (phoinikōn) and (kai) came out (exēlthon) into (eis) [a] meeting (hupantēsin) for him (autō).

And (kai) they were shouting (ekraugazon), “Hosanna (hōsanna)!

He having been eulogized (eulogēmenos) [is] the one (ho) causing himself to come (erchomenos) in (en) [the] name (onomati) of [the] Lord (kuriou, YHWH), the (ho) king (basileus) also (kai) of the (tou) Israel (Israēl)!”

(See Psalm 118:25-26)

John 12:14 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) having found (heurōn) [a] little donkey (onarion), he sat down (ekathisen) upon (ep’) it (auto), down according to as (kathōs) is (estin) having been written (gegrammenon):

John 12:15 (LIT/UBS4) “Do not be made fearful (mē phobou), daughter (thugatēr) of Zion (Siōn)

Behold (idou), the (ho) king (basileus) of you (sou) causes himself to come (erchetai), causing himself to sit down (kathēmenos) upon (epi) [a] foal (pōlon) of [a] donkey (onou)!”

(See Zech. 9:9)

John 12:16 (LIT/UBS4) The (hoi) disciples (mathētai) of him (autoy) absolutely did not know (ouk egnōsan) these things (tauta) of the (to) first (prōton) [writings, v14, RE]!

But (all’) when (hote) Jesus (Iēsous) was glorified (edoxasthē) then (tote) they were reminded (emnēsthēsan) that (hoti) these things (tauta) having been written (gegrammena) were being (ēn) over (ep’) [the sake, AE] of him (autō), and (kai) that (hoti) they did (epoiēsan) these things (tauta) to him (autō)!

John 12:17 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) crowd (ochlos) was witnessing (emarturei) [these things, v16, RE], the (ho) [crowd, RE] being (ōn) together with (met’) him (autou) when (hote) he sounded (ephōnēsen) for the (ton) Lazarus (Lazaron) out (ek) of the (tou) memorial (mnēmeiou), and (kai) awoke (ēgeiren) him (auton) out (ek) of dead ones (nekrōn).

John 12:18 (LIT/UBS4) Through (dia) [the sake, AE] of this (touto) also (kai) the (ho) crowd (ochlos) met (hupēntēsen) him (autō), because (hoti) they heard (ēkousan) of this (touto) of him (auton), [of him, RE] to have done (pepoiēkenai) the (to) sign (sēmeion).

John 12:19 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (hoi) Pharisees (pharisaioi) enunciated (eipan) to (pros) themselves (heautous), “Do you observe (theōreite) that (hoti) you absolutely do not profit (ouk ōpheleite), absolutely not one (ouden) [profit, RE]!?

See (ide), the (ho) cosmos (kosmos) went away (apēlthen) behind (opisō) him (autou)!”

John 12:20 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) out (ek) of the ones (tōn) there were being (ēsan) some (tines) Hellenes (Hellēnes) walking up (anabainontōn), in order that (hina) they may bow to4352 (proskunēsōsin) [him, v19, RE] in (en) the (tē) feast (heortē).

John 12:21 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), these ones (houtoi) came to (prosēlthon) Philip (Philippō), the one (tō) from (apo) Bethsaida (Bēthsaida) of the (tēs) Galilee (Galilaias)

And (kai) they were inquiring (ērōtōn) of him (auton), saying (legontes), "Lord (kurie), we desire (thelomen) to see (edein) the (ton) Jesus (Iēsoun)."

John 12:22 (LIT/UBS4) The (ho) Philip (Philippos) is caused to come (erchetai), and (kai) he speaks (legei) [the inquiry, v21, RE] to the (tō) Andrew (Andrea).

And (kai) Andrew (Andreas) and (kai) Philip (Philippos) [are each, AE] caused to come (erchetai) and (kai) they say (legousin) [the inquiry, v21, RE] to the (tō) Jesus (Iēsou).

John 12:23 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) is caused to make [a] decision (apokrinetai) for them (autois), saying (legōn), “The (hē) hour (hōra) has come (elēluthen) that (hina) the (ho) Son (huios) of the (tou) Mortal (anthrōpou) may be glorified (doxasthē).

John 12:24 (LIT/UBS4) Truly (amēn), truly (amēn) I say (legō) to you (humin), if perhaps (ean) the (ho) kernel (kokkos) of the (tou) grain (sitou), having fallen (pesōn) into (eis) the (tēn) ground (gēn), may not die away (mē apothanē), it (autos) stays (menei) alone (monos)

But (de) if perhaps (ean) [the kernal, RE] may die away (apothanē), it bears (pherei) much (polun) produce (karpon).

John 12:25 (LIT/UBS4) The one (ho) loving (philōn) the (tēn) soul (psuchēn) of him (autou) loses (apolluei) it (autēn)

And (kai) the one (ho) despising (misōn) the (tēn) soul (psuchēn) of him (autou) in (en) the (tō) cosmos (kosmō) to this (toutō), he shall keep watchful guard (phulaxei) of her (autēn) into (eis) ageless (aiōnion) life (zōēn).

John 12:26 (LIT/UBS4) If perhaps (ean) anyone (tis) may minister (diakonē) to me (emoi), follow (akoloutheitō) me (emoi);

and (kai) where (hopou) I (egō) am (eimi), the (ho) minister (diakonos) also (kai), the one (ho) [being] mine (emos), he shall cause himself to be (estai) there (ekei).

If perhaps (ean) anyone (tis) may minister (diakonē) to me (emoi), the (ho) Father (patēr) shall honor (timēsei) him (auton).

John 12:27 (LIT/UBS4) Now (nun) the (hē) soul (psuchē) of me (mou) has been troubled (tetaraktai).

And (kai) what (ti) may I enunciate (eipō), ‘Father (pater), keep me whole (sōson me) out (ek) of the (tēs) hour (hōras) of this (tautēs)? ‘

BUT (alla), through (dia) [the sake, AE] of this (touto) I came (ēlthon) into (eis) the (tēn) hour (hōran) of this (tautēn)!

John 12:28 (LIT/UBS4) Father (pater), glorify (doxason) the (to) name (onoma) of you (sou).”

Therefore (oun), [a] voice (phōnē) came (ēlthen) out (ek) of the (tou) heaven (ouranou), both (kai), “I glorified (edoxasa) [my name, RE]”, and (kai) “I shall glorify (doxasō) [my name, RE] again (palin).”

John 12:29 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) crowd (ochlos), the one (ho) having stood (hestōs) and (kai) having heard (akousas) [it, AE], it was saying (elegen) thunder (brontēn) to have come to pass (gegonenai).

Other ones (alloi) were saying (elegon) [a] messenger (angelos) has spoken (lelalēken) to him (autō).

John 12:30 (LIT/UBS4) Jesus (Iēsous) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē), and (kai) he enunciated (eipen), “Absolutely not (ou) through (di’) [the sake, AE] of me (eme) <has> the (hē) voice (phōnē), this one (hautē), come to pass (gegonen), BUT (alla), through (di’) [the sake, AE] of you (humas)!

John 12:31 (LIT/UBS4) Now (nun) is (estin) judgment (krisis) of the (tou) cosmos (kosmou) of this (toutou)

Now (nun) the (ho) chief one758 (archōn) of the (tou) cosmos (kosmou) of this (toutou) shall be thrown out (ekblēthēsetai) outside (exō).

John 12:32 (LIT/UBS4) And I (kagō), if perhaps (ean) I may be set above5312 (hupsōthō) out (ek) of the (tēs) land (gēs), I shall draw (helkusō) all (pantas) to (pros) myself (emauton).”

John 12:33 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) this (touto) he was saying (elegen) signifying (sēmainōn) death (thanatō), for which (poiō) [sake, AE] he was being about (ēmellen) to die (apothnēskein).

John 12:34 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) crowd (ochlos) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē) for him (autō), “We (hēmeis) heard (ēkousamen) out (ek) of the (tou) law (nomou) that (hoti) the (ho) Christ (Christos) remains (menei) into (eis) the (ton) age (aiōna).

And (kai) how (pōs) do you say (legeis su) that (hoti) it is required (dei) for the (ton) Son (huion) of the (tou) Mortal (anthrōpou) to be set above5312 (hupsōthēnai)?

Who (tis) is (estin) this one (houtos), the (ho) Son (huios) of the (tou) Mortal (anthrōpou)?”

John 12:35 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) enunciated (eipen), “Yet (eti) for [a] little (mikron) time (chronon) is (estin) the (to) light (phōs) among (en) you (humin).

Hold (echete) the (to) light (phōs) as (hōs) you walk around (peripateite), in order that (hina) darkness (skotia) may not take you down (mē humas katalabē).

And (kia) the one (ho) walking around (peripatōn) in (en) the (tē) darkness (skotia) has absolutely not seen (ouk oiden) of where (pou) he gets underway (hupagei)!

John 12:36 (LIT/UBS4) As (hōs) you hold (echete) the (to) light (phōs), believe (pisteuete) into (eis) the (to) light (phōs), in order that (hina) you may cause yourselves to become (genēsthe) sons (huioi) of light (phōtos).”

(For Jesus Christ being prophesied as a great light coming, the one who would shed light on the knowledge of God’s Word for a people being caused to sit down in darkness, see Isa. 9:1-2, 49:1-6; Mat. 4:12-16, 10:26-27; *Mark 4:21-23; Luke 1:76-79, 2:25-32, 8:16-17, 11:33, 12:1-3; John 1:1-14, 3:1-21, 8:12, 9:5, 11:9-10, 12:34-36, 41-46; Acts 13:46-47, 26:22-23; 2 Cor. 4:1-6; Eph. 5:8, 13, 14; Col. 1:12; 1 Thes. 5:5; 1 Pet. 2:9; 2 Pet. 1:19; 1 John 2:8-10.)

These things (touta) Jesus (Iēsous) spoke (elalēsen)

And (kai) he having gone away (apelthōn) he was hidden (ekrubē) from (ap’) them (autōn).

John 12:37 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) so many (tosauta) signs (sēmeia) of him (autou) having been done (pepoiēkotos) in front (emprosthen) of them (autōn), [but, RE] they were absolutely not believing (ouk episteuon) into (eis) him (auton);

John 12:38 (LIT/UBS4) in order that (hina) the (ho) Word (logos) of Isaiah (Hsaiou), of the (tou) prophet (prophētou), may be fulfilled (plērōthē), which (hon) he enunciated (eipen), “Lord (kurie, YHWH), who (tis) believed (episteusen) the (tē) [Word, RE] heard (akoē) of us (hēmōn)!?

And (kai) to whom (tini) was revealed (apekaluphthē) the (ho) arm (brachiōn) of [the] Lord (kuriuo, YHWH)!?”

(See Isa. 53:1)

John 12:39 (LIT/UBS4) Through (dia) [the sake, AE] of this (touto) they were absolutely not being inherently powered (ouk ēdunanto) to believe (pisteuein), because (hoti) again (palin), Isaiah (Hsaias) enunciated (eipen):

John 12:40 (LIT/UBS4) “He has made smoky (tetuphlōken) the (tous) eyes (ophthalmous) of them (autōn), and (kai) he hardened (epōrōsen) the (tēn) heart (kardian) of them (autōn);

that (hina) [if, AE] not () they may see (idōsin) [with, AE] the (tois) eyes (ophthalmois), and (kai) they may perceive (noēsōsin) to the (tē) heart (kardia), 'and (kai) they may be turned (straphōsin), and (kai) I shall cause myself to heal (iasomai) them (autous)!'

(See Isa.6:9-10)

John 12:41 (LIT/UBS4) These things (tauta) Isaiah (Hsaias) enunciated (eipen), because (hoti) he saw (eiden) the (tēn) glory (doxan) of him (autou), and (kai) he spoke (elalēsen) about (peri) him (autou).

John 12:42 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai), yet truly (mentoi), at the same time (homōs) many (polloi) out (ek) of the (tōn) chief ones758 (archontōn) believed (episteusan) into (eis) him (auton)!

BUT (alla), through (dia) [the sake, AE] of the (tous) Pharisees (pharisaious) they were absolutely not likewise confessing (ouch hōmologoun) [him, RE], in order that (hina) they may not become (mē genōtai) put away from the synagogue (aposunagōgoi);

John 12:43 (LIT/UBS4) because (gar) they loved (ēgapēsan) the (tēn) glory (doxan) of the (tōn) mortals (anthrōpōn) more than (mallon), so be it (ēper), the (tēn) glory (doxan) of the (tou) God (theou)!

John 12:44 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) Jesus (Iēsous) cried out (ekraxen) and (kai) enunciated (eipen), “The one (ho) believing (pisteuōn) into (eis) me (eme), absolutely does not believe (ou pisteuei) into (eis) me (eme), BUT (alla), into (eis) the one (ho) having sent (pempsanta) me (me)!

John 12:45 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) the one (ho) observing (theōrōn) me (eme) observes (theōrei) the one (ton) having sent (pempsanta) me (me).

John 12:46 (LIT/UBS4) I (egō) [am, AE] [a] light (phōs), have come (elēlutha) into (eis) the (ton) cosmos (kosmon);

in order that (hina) everyone (pas), the one (ho) believing (pisteuōn) into (eis) me (eme), he may not stay (mē meinē) in (en) the (tē) darkness (skotia).

John 12:47 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) if perhaps (ean) anyone (tis) may hear (akousē) the (tōn) statements (rhēmatōn) of me (mou) and (kai) may not keep watchful guard (mē phulaxē) [of them, AE], I (egō) absolutely do not judge (ou krinō) him (auton)!

Because (gar) I absolutely did not come (ou ēlthon) in order that (hina) I may judge (krinō) the (ton) cosmos (kosmon), BUT (alla), in order that (hina) I may make whole (sōsō) the (ton) cosmos (kosmon)!

John 12:48 (LIT/UBS4) The one (ho) displacing (athetōn) me (eme), and (kai) not (mē) receiving (lambonōn) the (ta) statements (rhēmata) of me (mou), he has (echei) the (ton) [Word, RE] judging (krinonta) him (auton)!

The (ho) Word (logos) which (hon) I spoke (elalēsa), that one (ekeinos) shall judge (krinei) him (auton) in (en) the (tē) last (eschatē) day (hēmera),

John 12:49 (LIT/UBS4) because (hoti) I (egō) absolutely did not speak (ouk elalēsa) out (ex) of myself (emautou)!

BUT (alla), the (ho) Father (patēr) having sent (pempsas) me (me), he (autos) has given (dedōken) to me (moi) [an] injunction (entolēn) of what (ti) I may enunciate (eipō), and (kai) of what (ti) I may speak (lalēsō)!

John 12:50 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) I have seen (oida) that (hoti) the (hē) injunction (entolē) of him (autou) is (estin) [to give, AE] ageless (aiōnios) life (zōē).

Therefore (oun), that which (ha) I (egō) speak (lalō), I speak (lalō) thusly (houtōs), down as (kathos) the (ho) Father (patēr) has stated (eirēken) to me (moi).”
