1 JOHN

Chapter 2

Update:  2024.02.03

1 John 2:1 (LIT/UBS4) Little born ones (teknia) of me (mou), I write (graphō) to you (humin) these things (tauta) in order that (hina) you may not sin (mē hamartēte)

And (kai) if perhaps (ean) anyone (tis) may sin (hamartē), we have (echomen) [a] Paraclete (paraklēton) toward (pros) the (ton) Father (patera), Jesus (Iēsoun) Christ (Christen), [a] righteous one (dikaion).

1 John 2:2 (LIT/UBS4) and (kai) he (autos) is (estin) [an] appeasement (hilasmos) about (peri) the (tōn) sins (hamartiōn) of us (hēmōn);

but (de) absolutely not (ou) about (peri) the (tōn) [sins, RE] of ours (hēmeterōn) only (monon), BUT (alla), about (peri) [the sins, RE] of the (tou) whole (holou) cosmos (kosmou) also (kai)!

1 John 2:3 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) in (en) this (toutō) we know (ginōskomen) that (hoti) we have known (egnōkamen) him (auton):

if perhaps (ean) we may watchfully keep (tērōmen) the (tas) injunctions (entolas) of him (autou)

1 John 2:4 (LIT/UBS4) The one (ho) saying (legōn) that (hoti), “I have known (egnōka) him (auton)”, and (kai) not (mē) watchfully keeping (tērōn) the (tas) injunctions (entolas) of him (autou), he is (estin) [a] false one (pseustēs), and (kai) the (hē) Truth (alētheia) is (estin) absolutely not (ouk) in (en) this (toutō) [false one, RE]!

1 John 2:5 (LIT/UBS4) But (d’) perhaps (an) whoever (hos) may watchfully keep (tērē) the (ton) Word (logon) of him (autou), truly (alēthos) in (en) him (toutō) the (hē) love (agapē) of the (tou) God (theou) has been made complete (teteleiōtai)

In (en) this (toutō) we know (ginōskomen) that (hoti) we are (esmen) in (en) him (autō):

1 John 2:6 (LIT/UBS4) the one (ho) saying (legōn) to stay (menein) in (en) to him (autō), that one (ekeinos) owes (opheilei) himself (autos) also (kai) to walk around (peripatein) thusly (houtōs) down according to as (kathōs) he walked around (periepatēsen).

1 John 2:7 (LIT/UBS4) Beloved ones (agapētoi), I absolutely do not write (ouk graphō) [a] new (kainēn) injunction (entolēn) to you (humin), BUT (all’), [an] old (palaian) injunction (entolēn) which (hēn) you have been having (eichete) from (ap’) [the] beginning (archēs)!

The (hē) injunction (entolē), the (hē) old one (palaia), is (estin) the (ho) Word (logos) which (hon) you heard (ēkousate).

1 John 2:8 (LIT/UBS4) Again (palin), [a] new (kainēn) injunction (entolēn) I write (graphō) to you (humin), which (ho) is (estin) true (alēthes) in (en) him (autō) and (kai) in (en) you (humin), that (hoti) the (hē) darkness (skotia) is led aside (paragetai), and (kai) the (to) light (phōs), the (to) true (alēthinon) [light, RE], already (ēdē) shines (phainei)

1 John 2:9 (LIT/UBS4) The one (ho) saying (legōn) to be (einai) in (en) the (tō) light (phōti) and (kai) despising (misōn) the (ton) brother (adelphon) of him (autou), he is (estin) in (en) the (tē) dark (skotia) until (heōs) this time (arti).

1 John 2:10 (LIT/UBS4) The one (ho) loving (agapōn) the (ton) brother (adelphon) of him (autou) stays (menei) in (en) the (tō) light (phōti), and (kai) [a] scandal (skandalon) is (estin) absolutely not (ouk) in (en) him (autō)!

(For Jesus Christ being prophesied as a great light coming, the one who would shed light on the knowledge of God’s Word for a people being caused to sit down in darkness, see Isa. 9:1-2, 49:1-6; Mat. 4:12-16, 10:26-27; *Mark 4:21-23; Luke 1:76-79, 2:25-32, 8:16-17, 11:33, 12:1-3; John 1:1-14, 3:1-21, 8:12, 9:5, 11:9-10, 12:34-36, 41-46; Acts 13:46-47, 26:22-23; 2 Cor. 4:1-6; Eph. 5:8, 13, 14; Col. 1:12; 1 Thes. 5:5; 1 Pet. 2:9; 2 Pet. 1:19; 1 John 2:8-10.)

1 John 2:11 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the one (ho) despising (misōn) the (ton) brother (adelphon) of him (autou) is (estin) in (en) the (tē) dark (skotia), and (kai) he walks around (peripatei) in (en) the (tē) dark (skotia).

And (kai) he has absolutely not seen (ouk oiden) of where (pou) he gets underway (hupagei), because (hoti) the (hē) dark (skotia) made smoky (etuphlōsen) the (tous) eyes (ophthalmous) of him (autou)!

1 John 2:12 (LIT/UBS4) I write (graphō) to you (humin), little born ones (teknia), because (hoti) the (hai) sins (hamartiai) have been let go (apheōntai) to you (humin) through (dia) the (to) name (onoma) of him (autou).

1 John 2:13 (LIT/UBS4) I write (graphō) to you (humin), fathers (pateres), because (hoti) you have known (egnōkate) the one (ton) from (ap’) [the] beginning (archēs).

I write (graphō) to you (humin), young ones (neaniskoi), because (hoti) you have conquered (nenikēkate) the (ton) evil one (ponēron).

1 John 2:14 (LIT/UBS4) I wrote (egrapsa) to you (humin), young children (paidia), because (hoti) you have known (egnōkate) the (ton) Father (patera)

I wrote (egrapsa) to you (humin), fathers (pateres), because (hoti) you have known (egnōkate) the one (ton) from (ap’) [the] beginning (archēs).

I wrote (egrapsa) to you (humin), young ones (neaniskoi), because (hoti) you are (este) strong ones (ischuroi), and (kai) the (ho) Word (logos) of the (tou) God (theou) stays (menei) in (en) you (humin), and (kai) you have conquered (nenikēkate) the (ton) evil one (ponēron).

1 John 2:15 (LIT/UBS4) Do not (mē) love (agapate) the (ton) cosmos (kosmon), but neither (mēde) things (ta) in (en) the (tō) cosmos (kosmō).

If perhaps (ean) anyone (tis) may love (agapa) the (ton) cosmos (kosmon), the (tē) love (agapē) of the (tou) Father (patros) is (estin) absolutely not (ouk) in (en) him (autō)

1 John 2:16 (LIT/UBS4) Because (hoti) all (pan) the (to) [things, v15, RE] in (en) the (tō) cosmos (kosmō), the (hē) lust (epithumia) of the (tōn) flesh (sarkos), and (kai) the (hē) lust (epithumia) of the (tōn) eyes (ophthalmōn), and (kai) the (hē) vanity (alazoneia) of the (tou) life (bion), is (estin) absolutely not (ouk) out (ek) of the (tou) Father (patros), BUT (all’), is (estin) out (ek) of the (tou) cosmos (kosmou)!

1 John 2:17 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) the (ho) cosmos (kosmos) is led aside (paragetai), and (kai) the (hē) lust (epithumia) of it (autou).

But (de) the one (ho) doing (poiōn) the (to) desire (thelēma) of the (tou) God (theou) stays (menei) into (eis) the (ton) age (aiōna).

1 John 2:18 (LIT/UBS4) Young children (paidia), it is (estin) [the] last (eschatē) hour (hōra), and (kai) [it is, RE] down according to as (kathōs) you heard (ēkousate), that (hoti) [an] antichrist (antichristos) causes itself to come (erchetai).

And (kai) now (nun) many (polloi) antichrists (antichristoi) have come to pass (gegonasin), from which (hothen) we know (ginōskomen) that (hoti) it is (estin) [the] last (eschatē) hour (hōra).

1 John 2:19 (LIT/UBS4) They came out (exēlthan) out (ex) of us (hēmōn), BUT (all’), they were absolutely not being (ouk ēsan) out (ex) of us (hēmōn)!

Because (gar) if (ei) they were being (ēsan) out (ex) of us (hēmōn) perhaps (an) they would have stayed (memenēkeisan) with (meth’) us (hēmōn).

BUT (all’), [they came out, RE] in order that (hina) they may be manifested (phanerōthōsin), that (hoti) they all (pantes) are (eisin) absolutely not (ouk) out (ex) of us (hēmōn)

1 John 2:20 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) you (humeis) hold (echete) [an] anointing (chrisma) from (apo) the (tou) holy one (hagiou), and (kai) you have seen (oidate) all things (pantes)

1 John 2:21 (LIT/UBS4) I absolutely did not write (ouk egrapsa) to you (humin) because (hoti) you have absolutely not seen (ouk oidate) the (tēn) Truth (alētheian), BUT (all’), because (hoti) you have seen (oidate) her (autēn)!

And (kai) [you have seen, RE] that (hoti) every (pan) falsehood (pseudos) is (estin) absolutely not (ouk) out (ek) of the (tēs) Truth (alētheias)

1 John 2:22 (LIT/UBS4) Who (tis) is (estin) the (ho) false one (pseustēs) if (ei) not (mē) the one (ho) causing himself to deny (arnoumenos), [saying, AE] that (hoti) "Jesus (Iēsous) is (estin) absolutely not (ouk) the (ho) Christ (Christos)!?"

This (houtos) [false one, RE] is (estin) the (ho) antichrist (antichristos), the (ho) [false one, RE] causing himself to deny (arnoumenos) the (ton) Father (patera) and (kai) the (ton) son (huion)

1 John 2:23 (LIT/UBS4) The one (ho), anyone (pas), causing himself to deny (arnoumenos) the (ton) son (huion), he absolutely does not (oude) hold (echei) the (ton) Father (patera)!

The one (ho) likewise confessing (homologōn) the (ton) son (huion), he holds (echei) the (ton) Father (patera) also (kai).

1 John 2:24 (LIT/UBS4) That which (ho) you (humeis) heard (ēkousate) from (ap’) [the] beginning (archēs), let [it, AE] stay (menetō) in (en) you (humin)

If perhaps (ean) that which (ho) you (humeis) heard (ēkousate) from (ap’) [the] beginning (archēs) may stay (meinē) in (en) you (humin), you (humeis) also (kai) shall stay (meneite) in (en) the (tō) son (huiō), and (kai) in (en) the (tō) Father (patri)

1 John 2:25 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) this (hautē) is (estin) the (hē) promise (epangelia) which (hēn) he caused himself to promise (epēngeilato) to us (hēmin), the (tēn) life (zōēn), the (tēn) ageless one (aiōnion)

(See John 5:19-28)

1 John 2:26 (LIT/UBS4) I wrote (egrapsa) these things (tauta) to you (humin) about (peri) the ones (tōn) causing you to wander (planōntōn humas)

1 John 2:27 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) the (to) anointing (chrisma) which (ho) you (humeis) received (elabete) from (ap’) him (autou) stays (menei) in (en) you (humin), and (kai) you absolutely do not have (ou echete) [a] need (chreian) that (hina) anyone (tis) may teach (didaskē) you (humas)!

BUT (all’), as (hōs) the (to) anointing (chrisma) of him (autou) teaches (didaskei) you (humas) about (peri) all things (pantōn), and (kai) is (estin) true (alēthes), and (kai) is (estin) absolutely not (ou) [a] falsehood (pseudos), and (kai) down according to as (kathōs) he taught (edidaxen) you (humas), stay (menete) in (en) to him (autō)!

(For all those who have received a new birth above in God’s promised gift of his paternal holy Spirit (Lev. 26:11-12; John 3:3-8; Acts 1:4; 2 Cor. 6:16-18; *1 Pet. 1:23), and for those paternal sons being taught by God (YHWH) himself, see Isa. 54:13; Jer. 31:31-34; Luke 12:12; John 5:19-20, 6:45, 14:26, 15:26, 16:13-14; 1 Cor. 1:4-8, 2:10, 12:8; 2 Cor. 5:19; Gal. 1:12; Eph. 4:20-21; 1 Thes. 4:9; 2 Tim. 2:7; Heb. 8:8-12, 10:16-17; James 1:5-6; 1 John 2:27, 5:20)

1 John 2:28 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) now (nun), little born ones (teknia), stay (menete) in (en) him (autō);

in order that (hina) if perhaps (ean) he may be manifested (phanerōthē) we may have (schōmen) boldness (parrēsian), and (kai) we might not be ashamed (mē aischunthōmen) away from (ap’) him (autou) in (en) the (tō) presence (parousia) of him (autou)

1 John 2:29 (LIT/UBS4) If perhaps (ean) you may have seen (eidēte) that (hoti) [the Father, v24, RE] is (estin) [a] righteous one (dikaios), you know (ginōskete) that (hoti) everyone (pas) also (kai), the one (ho) doing (poiōn) the (tēn) righteousness (dikaiosunēn), he has been generated (gegennētai) out (ex) of him (autou).
